...same expression, same language, different meanings on different servers O.o

I play on PC platform and I get confused whenever I hear the word/expression "meh", because on NA server I've noticed that it's being used as an expression for "I don't care", where as on the EU server it's mainly used as "I HATE/ DISLIKE THIS".

Wikipedia's definition of meh

Now the difference between indifference and strong emotional reaction is actually big, and it is less confusing when I play the game, but I wonder how many people have been misunderstanding each other on the forums, where both definitions are used.

Now I'm making a deal out of this thing, because I've always known "meh" to be an expression for indifference, so whenever I got asked questions and I took my time to carefully answer and responded with a "meh" I got pretty offended. Because if people don't care, then why waste my time? I don't get offended anymore, now that I know that people on EU use it for a different meaning...

Are there more expressions or words that are used like this? I'm actually curious now lol

It has a more subjective and contextual meaning, for me it means that "I'm not really impressed" or "I'm indifferent to it".

I use it (rarely) to mean 'indifferent', almost like a virtual shrug. I don't consider it to be negative. Mind you, I would rather spend those few seconds extra to type, "I feel indifferent".

There is another word that generates a considerable amount of confusion it seems: opinion.

since when was 'meh' indicative of hate or dislike in the eu?

I was thinking that. I play on EU servers, and I'm British which means I understand insulting someone by saying "excuse me" or saying "You're absolutely right" and meaning "You could not be more wrong, and you're also an idiot". But I would always interpret meh to mean "I don't care".

I suppose it could be a short, somewhat evasive way of saying "I'm so sick of this conversation I don't care anymore, let's just stop talking about it" but that would depend on context.

Like if someone asked what build they should use and it sparked off a massive debate about which item set/skill morph/ Other detail is better, they might respond with "meh" in the hope it will kill the conversation.

But other than that I can't see how you could use it to say you're annoyed.

@Birdovic hi muffinpie, I've always had a char in NA, and now I have 2.... I don't play there much though.

Perhaps I'm just hanging out with the wrong crowd in EU, because I've only met 1 person who used it to express indifference, everyone else I've seen have used it to express dislike/hatred...
