If you're thinking of the word I think you are it gets even more complicated: it's also the name for a traditional food in the UK, sort of a flattened meat ball.

I think that precedes either of the other meanings of the word.

Then there's a traditional sponge pudding with sultanas in it, known as spotted..."Richard".

We just call it "bagażnik" in my language, from bagaż (luggage). Makes everything much simpler.

I picked up british speech watching top gear. . .

the reason we call the trunk just that is because there was a storage trunk on carriages back in the day and that evolved into the trunk of the car as it is nowadays. that said some cars are reverse (porches and what not)

I do however say boot and bonnet though. and zed instead of z, I also met a person that was astonished I could tell he was welsh XD
