This might sound nooby but gotta ask anyway. Basically I see RP talk in chat and I kind of don't get it, my understanding was RP meant role player like every person in the game is if that's the case why do they talk like they're different kind of players, is there even a difference with the guys that categorize as RP to everyone else?

RP does in fact equal role playing. While you right to an extent - by playing this game, we are, in fact doing a limited form a role playing, to most people it goes a little further.

People that RP are putting themselves in their characters shoes, and playing them and reacting with them the way that CHARACTER would, and not the way the PLAYER would. At the same time, they talk "in character" - speaking as though they were actually that character. Kind of like acting. You're pretending to be a person that lives in Tamriel, so no mention of Xboxes, or the election, ect. If you're character is evil, you do and say things an evil character would. Veteran RPers will even go sofar as to do things like use slang native to the world, and research a lot of the ingame lore as to make the character more "believable".

Every time I go into a Brewery to craft food i always see the text chat filled with verbiage that looks to be taken out of a erotic novel. I had no idea RP consisted of this...well to be honest I have no idea about anything RP related other than pretending to be someone else. Do RP'ers have their own unique terminology / language? Do they actually play the game without evoking RP elements? Just curious.

Have you ever written a novel or short story? RP is kind of like writing a collaborative novel with other people. Or maybe a play. That might be closer to the reality: a collaborative play.

Thought of in those terms it's really not so strange.

It can be quite fun. I rp extensively in a large rp community with multiple guilds and characters of varying professions, personalities, goals, races, ect. It's a nice break for me and extends the games enjoyment when I'm not busting heads in Cyrodiil or running vet dungeons/trials.

RP in these sorts of games goes all the way back to tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, if not earlier.

Some people will just play the character to level up and get the loot to get better equipment, others will have their character turn down their share of gold reward at the end due to a vow of poverty or have their character run away from the random spider encounter because their character has arachnaphobia or rush into a fight stacked against them because that character has a crush on the current target of the bullies.
Depending on who you are playing with, the end results of either playstyle can be very rewarding, and frequently funny. But it really does hinge on who you play with.

There is a particular crowd that especially likes to RP romantic stuff. That crowd seems to have a decent number of members in ESO - the majority of it never touches that kind of stuff though.

There is no unique terminology or language - I guess I am a little confused by the question. You are just creating a character and persona, and acting that out. So you would speak and talk as that person would, so it really is unique to that world.

Most players do not spend 100% of their time "in character". It will differ from group to group though. Sometimes the "say" channel is always considered in-character, while others are not. Some groups consider you in-character at all times unless you signal otherwise, for example by maybe putting ** before any out of character text. It really just depends on the particular group.

Why? If it's because of ERP, then you should be aware that most serious roleplayers aren't actually into that and avoid it as well.
Of course there is such a thing as bad RP, like pretending your character has some sort of power he doesn't actually have or coming from another setting. But that's a pretty rare occurance.

Where can I find the RPers on XBox? The closest thing I've found are some people who have a guild based around protecting their sacred squirrel.

I wish area chat in Mournhold and Elden Root was filled with people saying "This one ..." or trying to peddle Skooma. Instead all I hear is people breathing, mic static and bros talking about bro stuff ... brah.

This is really awful when it happens and it wasn't something everybody agreed with beforehand. I mean, if your group need an antagonist with a certain kind of power for a storyline and that skill isn't available to players (because not everything NPCs can do PCs can), then fine. If you are a closed group that does Out of The World RP (another setting), that's fine too if your group is fine with it, but don't push it into any other RP groups. On this case I would also advise to use ** for actions (as in, *she walked to the counter and picked up the phone*) instead of the emote channel and keep it in group chat.

Everybody must know what is going on and agree with it. That's the most important rule and it is a matter of having respect for your fellow roleplayers.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

      Meet my characters:
      Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Some people develop more intriguing story lines behind their character and separate game dialog from character dialog . Those would be the players you are seeing as dialog role players . Others occasionally speak in character but still talk plainly about game mechanics and outworldly conversation topics , like this one does often . There are many different levels of role play and all have good qualities for different interests .

Those that just select class , race and gear solely for maximizing game performance are just gamers . They may or may not like listening to NPCs or other players speaking in character but most in common they are just out to win battles and talk about what ever socially .

There is no right or wrong play style . I find myself in between these two social groups .

You can find some rather fun stories on the Internet about role playing like this. One of my favorites:
      http://tabletitans.com/tales/post/recipe-for-disaster

Role players have a lot to offer. Unfortunately it's more difficult to mesh role playing and combat in games like ESO (most of what I have seen in this game has been outside of the actual combat itself), but if anyone knows anyone who does this I would absolutely love to meet them.

It is expected that the experience in any social media like an MMO won't be the same for everybody due to the multitude of people and an equal diversity of agreements, playstyles, and approaches towards enjoying it. Different groups are expected to mutually respect each other, but there seems to be not only in the RP community but in every other large tangible playstyle some erroneous generalizations about other groups.

It seems very inappropriate to judge people by their playstyles especially based on general assumptions like "they are PvP and it is unimmersive, RP is more or less fun and PvP are elitists type of person". If your way of enjoying the game doesn't mesh with theirs, you're very welcome to use the /ignore tool to filter your experience. The game has a plethora of features to offer and you just need to find your bite and go for it.

Another thing is that once you set up an account and start playing, you don't sign in for one exclusive feature, and as people progress into the game they might change their playstyles and opt for different approaches than originally intended.

It would be very welcome if the game could offer a bit more features towards phasing players based on a sort of tagging system, like LFG, LFM, RP, PVP etc. If the developers are looking into more ways to help people find their sort of friends, group and guild, having a tag to gather them all in the same physical world would be very helpful.
