Why? If it's because of ERP, then you should be aware that most serious roleplayers aren't actually into that and avoid it as well.
Of course there is such a thing as bad RP, like pretending your character has some sort of power he doesn't actually have or coming from another setting. But that's a pretty rare occurance.
There's no good reason for it. In my experience the people who look down their noses at roleplayers generally fall into one of two categories:Why would anyone look down there noses at roleplayers?MasterSpatula wrote: »This is an RPG. - Insecure people who simply need to find a group that they can look down on in order to feel better about themselves.
- Unimaginative people who are jealous of people who are imaginative and regularly exercise their imagination (note: there are plenty of unimaginative people who wouldn't look down their noses at RPers, as there are plenty of unimaginative people who don't get jealous of people who are imaginative).
Note: I don't engage in RP online myself. I've played tabletop pen and paper RPGs since the 80s, but in games like ESO I prefer to just play the game and not really RP. I mean, I've got a bit of backstory in my head for each of my characters, and I tend to make their decisions in quests based on how I feel that character would react, but I don't do the whole thing of hanging out with RPers and playing the role of my characters. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I prefer my RP to be in person.

If I've learned anything from this thread It's that I'm a tad jealous people can get what they're getting out this game, I just play to rank up up get good gear do my thing while these roleplayers seem to get a whole lot more, that deserves some respect imo.

I agree with the above - started with the blue box of DND - but I will say that get my self, my sweetie and the other couple we tend to do undaunted stuff with - and the RP starts slipping out.
Because after all, Ragnar, what's your problem with that (terrain feature) because an 8 year old reach child could do better than you...
There's nothing wrong with a little jealousy paired with respect for the people you're jealous of! It's when the respect isn't there and the person who's jealous feels the need to belittle the people who they're jealous of in order to make themselves feel less jealous that there's a problem. There's no good reason for it. I think I still have the blue box on a shelf... If not the box itself (which might be one of the D&D boxes that kind of fell apart over the years), I've definitely got the books from the box.newtinmpls wrote: »I've played tabletop pen and paper RPGs since the 80s, but in games like ESO I prefer to just play the game and not really RP. I'd venture to say that you're approaching this entire discussion like a perfectly well-adjusted adult. You had a question about something you didn't understand, you asked it in a non-judgmental fashion, and you've been interested in having a genuine discussion about something that's foreign to you. Sadly that's often not how such threads go. It's refreshing to have this type of conversation.

I actually put those people into the category of "insecure and need to find people to look down on in order to feel better about themselves." If someone's reaction to not understanding another person is to hate or ridicule them, odds are that reaction is caused by an inferiority complex and an underlying need to put people down in order to feel better about themselves. There's no good reason for it. That's very well put UrQuan. I would add one more though, and that is people that simply just don't understand. And perhaps have no intent on understanding, so their only go to reaction is either to hate or ridicule.
