The RP community does a good job reminding me to shut off my text chat.

Why? If it's because of ERP, then you should be aware that most serious roleplayers aren't actually into that and avoid it as well.
Of course there is such a thing as bad RP, like pretending your character has some sort of power he doesn't actually have or coming from another setting. But that's a pretty rare occurance.

Sadly the trolls who focus on ERP have been tainting the general story driven RPers name for a while now. swtor is a great example of it.

Why would anyone look down there noses at roleplayers?
There's no good reason for it. In my experience the people who look down their noses at roleplayers generally fall into one of two categories:
    1. Insecure people who simply need to find a group that they can look down on in order to feel better about themselves.
    2. Unimaginative people who are jealous of people who are imaginative and regularly exercise their imagination (note: there are plenty of unimaginative people who wouldn't look down their noses at RPers, as there are plenty of unimaginative people who don't get jealous of people who are imaginative).
In both cases (and there can definitely be overlap between them) it's not about the RPers, it's about the inferiority complexes of the people looking down on them.

Note: I don't engage in RP online myself. I've played tabletop pen and paper RPGs since the 80s, but in games like ESO I prefer to just play the game and not really RP. I mean, I've got a bit of backstory in my head for each of my characters, and I tend to make their decisions in quests based on how I feel that character would react, but I don't do the whole thing of hanging out with RPers and playing the role of my characters. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I prefer my RP to be in person.

Right on brother. To be honest with you, good rp with great people is what keeps me in mmos for extended periods of time. Otherwise I'm hopping around to the next best thing after pvp/pve boredom sets in.

Good chat RP is very rare these days in mmoRPgs... almost a lost art.

But extreme non-RPing is unfortunately all too common in chat with people talking about anything but the game almost as if they're embarrassed to really get into playing ESO.

Ha Ragnar... I said earlier in this thread that I'd be interested in watching a bad sarcastic type RP on twitch didn't realise at the time but my comment was clearly base on Ragnar Lodbrok whom I loved in Vikings season 1 and 2 that I'd kind of forgotten about, need to get caught up on that cheers for the reminder :)

I was actually referring to the Nord DK of a friend of mine. The dude is HUGE and always gets stuck if he tries to jump over something. He got "caught" up trying to jump over a wheelbarrow ... OMG I still chuckle visualizing it.

    PS...good taste in shows there!

If it is an actual rp session it is not to bad. The erotic stuff would be better left in private chat seriously folks I do not want to know what you are doing to each other in that situation. I do not want to know what you are fondling licking or anything else honest. If you are doing this even is say chat where I can see it...it is as bad as forcing me to watch ***. Please stop. Be considerate of other players.

As many have stated if it is a true rp then you are putting yourself in the characters shoes and reacting the way you feel they would react. Frightened, angry, sad....and the situations would involve more then another characters private bits. How does your character feel about running errands for the prince. How do they feel about having to rescue that priest yet again..... What sort of things does the character like to do on their down time get a drink at the local pub try to find a book and sit under a tree to read. There are endless possibilities.

There's nothing wrong with a little jealousy paired with respect for the people you're jealous of! It's when the respect isn't there and the person who's jealous feels the need to belittle the people who they're jealous of in order to make themselves feel less jealous that there's a problem.

I'd venture to say that you're approaching this entire discussion like a perfectly well-adjusted adult. You had a question about something you didn't understand, you asked it in a non-judgmental fashion, and you've been interested in having a genuine discussion about something that's foreign to you. Sadly that's often not how such threads go. It's refreshing to have this type of conversation.

I think I still have the blue box on a shelf... If not the box itself (which might be one of the D&D boxes that kind of fell apart over the years), I've definitely got the books from the box.

I actually started with this red box:
    D%26D_1983_Basic_Rules_cover.jpg
But I also inherited a whole bunch of older stuff from a couple of different boyfriends of my older sisters.

It's been years since I've played D&D (lately I only play the Iron Kingdoms RPG), but I've still got an almost complete collection of everything published for AD&D 1e, AD&D 2e, and most of the Basic D&D stuff.

Every time I go into a Brewery to craft food i always see the text chat filled with verbiage that looks to be taken out of a erotic novel. I had no idea RP consisted of this...well to be honest I have no idea about anything RP related other than pretending to be someone else. Do RP'ers have their own unique terminology / language? Do they actually play the game without evoking RP elements? Just curious.

That's ERP, it pre-exists the online game, and has always existed in every online game.

Basically every game has a TTP (time 'til ***...someone creating a penile shape) and a time 'til ERP, usually a brothel.

And every online game has a brothel. Yeah, it's a bit of shocker to new online game developers. Starr Long, the original producer for Ultima Online, recalled his surprise in an interview with UO turned 15 :p

I recall, as a new Kesmai employee, sifting through the host logs for Air Warrior due to a customer complaint and coming across....oh, how I wish I could unremember reading what I found.

RP in the regular sense FLOURISHED in ESO during its first year in a manner we've never seen before. Another former Kesmai employee documented that first year on a YouTube channel. Marvelous stuff! Lots of videos, but I'm attaching his first year summary shortly before he passed.

Yeah its been a real eye opener for me and tbh I'm quite intrigued by the whole idea even though its something that has never even remotely crossed my mind, for the best part of tonight I've been thinking if I could be anyone who would that be, I dunno maybe I'll even try it if my imagination comes up something we shall see.

I have been rping in mmos since ultima online. It adds a whole new layer to the games I play. Sadly finding good people who enjoy story driven rp is a hard thing to find for me. My luck puts me with erp focused people or God mode people. Had one dude last night claim to be a dragon... He then killed my character without consent. So I'm back to square one with looking for rp people.

That's very well put UrQuan. I would add one more though, and that is people that simply just don't understand. And perhaps have no intent on understanding, so their only go to reaction is either to hate or ridicule.

@Argah You've had some great explanations already, and its nice to see that you're genuinely wanting to understand and care about the replies you are getting! :) I have only done a little RP in ESO, it didn't go too well though, mostly just standing around, feeling left out, but I guess you have to spend a lot of time finding the right group for you. It can be fun to take on a role on your own though, you might get noticed and people play along, or you might not. For me I'd probably have to find a group that on one hand doesn't take the RP so serious that it is isolating/overwhelming to new people, and yet can run it well enough that it is engaging.
But so far, I have been happy just playing everything PVE has to offer and running my guild :)

Just one small type of RP.

Just like there are PvPers, PvEs, raiders, soloists, dungeon-runners, hardcores, casuals etc... There basically just as many various 'types' of RP style too.

At it's core is RP is about acting (akin to acting in a movie). Just how a player chooses to act (with other characters and their character's environment) is entirely up them.
If you can be anything, be kind.

That's very well put UrQuan. I would add one more though, and that is people that simply just don't understand. And perhaps have no intent on understanding, so their only go to reaction is either to hate or ridicule.
I actually put those people into the category of "insecure and need to find people to look down on in order to feel better about themselves." If someone's reaction to not understanding another person is to hate or ridicule them, odds are that reaction is caused by an inferiority complex and an underlying need to put people down in order to feel better about themselves.

That won't hold true all of the time, but I'd say it's true at least 9 times out of 10.

This is an RPG. You don't have to chat in character or anything, but anyone who looks down their noses at roleplayers needs to take a good, long look at themselves.
In both cases (and there can definitely be overlap between them) it's not about the RPers, it's about the inferiority complexes of the people looking down on them.

    ...

Very true, people are almost always exclusively hostile to unknown things.
If you can be anything, be kind.

The RP community does a good job reminding me to shut off my text chat.

You can actually turn off the /emote channel in the chat tab settings. Worked great for me, and I even have separate tabs to turn off zone chat (for when people are filling it with politicrap) and specific guilds.
