How much dmg a tank can block?

Recently I was playing tank and was killed by heavy attack of final boss in vet. Selene dungeon (this attack with holo bear).

I know this attack is not supposed to be blocked but roll dodge/sidestepped which is quite easy. But that's not the point, I let myself be killed just to check if I still can live this attack while blocking.

What I was wondering is how much damage actually can block a pure tank, that stands in place with active block. I was hit by 52,400 dmg, and my block didn't help me much.

Even while I have 40k HP, all 7 heavy armor parts (and shield) with sturdy trait 3,5% each i.e block cost reduction 24,5% + next 20% from champion points + next 8% from Absorb Magic (1H&S ability slotted) + next 36% from 1H&S ability passive. And relevant several percents of increased damage reduction from passives and dragonknight's Igneous Shield.

Is there any way to check/expect how much max single damage I can sustain during block before I'm killed?

As far as I'm aware that attack is a guaranteed 1 shot if you don't get out of the way of it, I ate a few of them on my first run and then tried it later on my Templar Tank which has 70k health and even with my blazing shield up and it still dropped me. I do not have much awareness of what the boss is doing when trying to taunt and stack all of the adds.

Maybe that 52k is your number for that tank? Some skills are just programmed to be one-shots. (Another example is the sword for those who get pinned down in Fungal Grotto II when the group can't kill an add fast enough). Maybe it takes 52k of damage to cut through your 40k HP when blocking?
Why be normal when you can be better?

Where is the suggestion to stay out of Red in the Recap?

Because none of those suggestions would be of any benefit.

Blocking an attack reduces damage by 50%, which acts multiplicatively with all other sources of mitigation. But this is not an example of how block mitigation works; this is an example of an intended 1-shot mechanic (although realistically, it's just a high-damage ability. Tanks with high enough health and mitigation will survive the attack, if only by a small margin). Against an attack that wasn't designed to kill you outright, you would have blocked 50% of the damage, which would have been further mitigated by other sources, such as armor and spell resist.

That 50% is a base. It's increased by certain passives, mostly from the 1h&s skill line. There are some others too, but this is the answer in it's most basic form.

First time I ran this dungeon after the update was with a dk tank that had 55k health. He survived the hit everytime. Though he went from 55k health to 10k everytime. It was very stressful on me as the healer, my breath is huge but it still took 2 of them to get him back up. So I don't think it is a one hit mechanic, just one that hits stupid hard. It is better for everyone to just avoid it. It is telegraphed like 3 seconds before it happens, so it is easy to avoid.

I tanked this fight on my DPS stamina NB (around 20k health) yesterday while running it with friends who are all DPS. We didn't have an issue because I simply moved. The tell is long and very obvious, and it is absolutely meant to kill you blocking or not if you don't avoid it with movement or dodge roll.

You can get away with not blocking one shot mechanics if you are super beefy but only on easier vet dungeons. It gets to a point where you get hit by like 150k dmg after reductions.

Thx all for the insightful comments. Now it's time to check this attack's damage when the Magma Shell is active...

Do you know what's really confusing? When both your DD are wearing Selene's and 3 bears pop up at the same time. You don't know where to dodge to.

With the new "insta kill" bosses armor doesn't matter, nor shields, nor blocking, only if yoy have enough stamina to dodge roll out of the way. Kind of sucks to be anything magika with the trends the new content is showing.

Selene's ghost bear is not blockable since it's considered a ground effect. Only way to survive is to dodge it. And you have to actually be >10 m away or behind her to be able to be 100% safe. I was perpendicular to the bear's direction but still got killed.

probably the most stamina intense fight is kena in wgt. and in that its just a matter of learning the patterns of when to dodge, and you will be fine.

you don't need to dodge anything in that fight, you can block everything.
