In fact, we can be sure crossbows existed before the war for the empty throne ends, as Serana herself asks you who the current king is, then asks what the heck the imperial empire is.
So lore wise, could definately do and have done. I would LOVE to see just new animations for crossbows and keep the bow tree at the minimum. For crafting or drop, it would be essentially the same thing as robe vs jerkin. No real difference but asthetics.

The reason the Fighter's Guild has Silver Bolts is because of that very thing: The Dawnguard. The Fighter's Guild skills are mainly for hunting Daedra and those cursed (Werewolf and Vampire), therefore all we really need from Crossbows is Silver Bolts.
Oh no, no crossbows! Please can we have some kind of technological progress across the Elder Scrolls series? Tamrielic technology hasn't changed one iota in hundreds of years, thanks to this game and its pandering to tropes and fanboyism. The least we can do is keep crossbows in the future for goodness sake.

I would respectfully disagree. My toon having a badass crossbow on his back would be absolutely amazing. As the suggestion I forwarded has little to no impact on the game balance or copetitiveness, I will assume you are content with the silver bolts ability. I am not, and would enjoy seeing new bow reskins that depict crossbows, in adit ion to what we have.

Others have already commented on the lore implications of crossbows in this time period (ie. lore-wise they should exist), so I don't really have anything to add from that standpoint.Oh no, no crossbows! From a real-world historical standpoint, though, most people don't realize just how old crossbows really are. The earliest crossbows we know of date back about 2500 years. They were used in ancient China, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, etc.
They were overshadowed to a certain extent by the longbow through a period of the Middle Ages, but that was partly because the longbow of the time was a very powerful weapon in the hands of a properly trained bowman (ie. trained since childhood), with greater power, rate of fire, and range than most contemporary crossbows. Crossbows were always much more popular with most armies, though, because they required far less training, and they evolved to become more powerful and quicker to reload over time.
The other (probably more significant) factor that made crossbows relatively uncommon during a period in the Middle Ages was a Papal ban on using them against Christians.
