So many questions...
1.) Why do many builds only use 5 pieces of light armor? It seems like the light armor passives are pretty amazing and keep stacking, no?
2.) How necessary is it to use both skill bars for high end content?
3.) If using both skill bars and swapping, do buffs and spells still work? I know my pets disappear when I swap bars.
4.) Are there any professions I NEED to work on if I want to one day have an end game sorcerer?

1) For a newbie player, 7 pieces of 1 armor is always better. But there is this one passive from the Undauned guild, which increases your magicka, health and stamina by 2% for each different armor type. So when using 5 light and 1 heavy and 1 medium, you get 6% more stats instead of only 2% for just light armor.
2) Omg using both bars is ESSENTIAL ! Not even a contest. You can't live without 2 bars, nobody can. (okay templars can, because they only need to spam 2 buttons to get everything they need)
3) Spells etc still work. Pets are different than all other spells. They need to be on all bars to stay active, they do not scale with spell damage and are not affected by champion points, therefor not viable in end game as they are too weak.
4) Basically, not really. But Alchemy and Provisioning offer passives that are very usefull, even when you don't actively use them. Alchemy offers a passive, that increases the duration of potion effects by 30% ! That's a lot and a must for end game in my opinion. Provisioning increases the duration of food and drinks by 20 minutes. Probably not a must have, but it safes you time, and time is gold.

Awesome! Thank you very much. So it looks like I should start working on Undaunted since I'm only lvl 2 and need lvl 7 for that passive.
Two bars definitely makes things complicated but I can understand the need. I just have to figure out what spells/buffs to use that won't disappear as soon as I swap bars because that is obviously a waste.

You need Undaunted 9 actually to make full use of the passive Undaunted 7 is only Rank 1
And well, all buffs stay when you swap bars. Pets not included
And when you are really talented , you get yourself a 3rd bar with Overload. That's where I put my long lasting buffs like lightning form, surge and daedric mines. The Overload bar was originally designed for Summoners. Because Sorcerer has so many toggles, that's why we get a 3rd bar.
When you are using 2 pets, then the Overload bar is a must have, there is no way around it.

Ha, oh great. So I have a ways to go with Undaunted.
I am messing around with Bound Armor for the first time and it seems like it drops off when I swap bars. That contradicts what you are saying above though about buffs sticking. Are there certain ones that stick and others that do not?

Bound Armor is a toggle unfortunately, like the sorc pets. So you toggle it on and it remains on until you toggle it off, or switch to a bar where it's not slotted. To keep it active at all times you need it on all bars, including overload bar. I also rebind the button to one I'm unlikely to hit by accident.

Well, I thought that was obvious. Bound armor is a toggle just like pets, so it will break when you don't have it on all bars.

So for that reason I am going to assume it is not a 'must have' skill since it would have to be on all bars to be effective?
Thanks again for your patience.

Depending on the fight/dungeon... yes.
http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/2-1-8-the-yolo-wizard-magicka-sorcerer-insane-burst-dps-pve-build/
Here is one good build i've tried using with small variations because i don't have some of the items yet.
but basically, i almost always have bound armor on all bars along with inner light. in some dungeons lately, i've been taking off bound aegis and slotting empowered ward on one bar and power surge on the other (in place of bound aegis) because i have an easier time surviving that way.... it comes down to personal preference and how you like to play too.

Bound armor is definitely a must have skill for pve. 8% magicka is too much to lose.
I am no authority on pet builds but I can tell you what the meta sorcerer dps build is
On your front bar you should be running force pulse, crystal frags, daedric curse, bound aegis, inner light with shooting star ultimate.
Backbar should be fire blockade, liquid lightning, makes wrath(or power surge if you don't have potions for major sorcery), bound aegis, inner light, and energy overload for utility
For gear you could run 5 julianos and 3 Magnus or seducer until you can farm out end game gear. Best in slot for a magsorc is 5 twice born star, 4 infallible aether, 2 nerieneth and a maelstrom staff backbar. This is gear you won't have for a long time but I figured I should let you know anyway

Wow, thank you guys for being so helpful.
I know my gear is probably seriously lacking since I am still using all gear that dropped from enemies. I'm assuming I can buy the julians and magnus you mentioned? My professions are still only around lvl 15-20 except for alchemy which is around 40.

Totally noob question...how do I find the materials to purchase so I can have them crafted? I'm on Xb1 and the trading and chat economy seem pretty far behind other MMO's I've played.
Neverwinter for example had an auction house and trading bazaar and a MUCH better chat system for console.

You need to join a guild if I remember correct to access guild traders to buy materials , but just lvl up your crafting and go harvest materials cheaper and easier than sifting through countless traders with some shocking prices.
All it cost is a bit of time and effort , collect stuff whilst questing win win..
Magicka sorc is the hardest class to play in pvp and lowest single target in pve endgame. And zenimax seems to nerf us to vanity pets someday. Don't bother yourself reroll another class like nightblade or templar. Even if zos will try to nerf them, the army of qqers will rise and nothing gonna change for them in terms of balance

Lol magicka sorcerer battles for top dps on all mixed aoe fights which is almost all boss fights. While providing your group with spell critical and ultra powerful conduits

I hope both of you realise that he is a beginner ? For newbies spamming 1 button like sweeps and them executing with radiant will lead to waaaaay more damage output in general. Plz don't speak like all u see is a sorc with 40k dps in any vMoL boss fight ...
@Dracane you mentioned Surge on your OL bar, so do you go into OL, pop it and come out every time you want to buff??

That's such a terrible counter argument. How do you expect someone to learn if you tell them to roll a different class and spam 2 buttons....
Magicka sorcerer doesn't even have a hard rotation.
https://gaming.youtube.com/watch?v=sAZH9VDft3E&feature=share
This is a video of a sorc pulling 47K on zhaj with the simple rotation and he isn't even in best in slot gear
Don't even try and tell me that nb is easier for endgame
