What would you rather spend Crowns on than Lottery Boxes?

So, per reddit we are getting the dreaded lottery boxes. What would you rather they add?

For myself, if I could spend a small fee in Crowns to get new Hireling stories or ask the Loremaster questions and be guaranteed a useful answer, I'd seriously consider it. Sort of like an in-game magazine subscription.

I honestly think the Crown Store is good as it is. Mounts, pets, costumes, personalities, and they are adding new hair styles too eventually. That's what I spend Crowns on. Other than black hair dye, there is nothing new I can think of right now that I think they should add.

About the boxes, I loathe lottery boxes. But as long as they only drop things that were previously up for sale directly (limited time cosmetics that were removed already), I'm ok with it. Now, if/when they add "Lottery Boxes exclusives", then I'll have a real problem with it.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.

I called this *** the day the crown store was introduced. Nobody believed me.

We're long past pay2win with race changes or even using respec scrolls and crown repair kits to substitute real cash for gold.

    Now buying loot directly?

Even if there isn't actual in-game loot...what exactly are the boxes adding to Tamriel? Personally if I want to gamble, I'll go to a casino. I don't like to gamble, so this does nothing for me. I'm not big on cosmetic costumes and mounts, but I'd rather have more of those because at least with those you can see what you're getting.

The only game that used a lockbox system that wasn't godawful was DCUO. And that was only because subscribers could crack the boxes for free. A system like that, I could live with... anything else? Not so much. Especially if they're sticking new stuff in those boxes.

Well it sounds like Neverwinter lock boxes.....that's definately going to contain items so it's 100% pay2win.

If it's only cosmetic items, then it's a lottery which might grab some negative attention cause digital lotteries don't go well even if you're not capable of winning money.

Potentially makes a mockery of 'limited time mounts' & the likes. Who knows though, as they could still turn out to be fairly rare items, rng & all that.

GW2's boxes really left a bad taste on my mouth, even if they were dropped and not necessarily bought. Every event ended up consisting in farming boxes for the duration of the event because almost every new cosmetic was in the stupid boxes. I absolutely hate it.

I never played Neverwinter. I've got enough Cryptic lockboxes squirreled away in Champions and STO though.

Okay, actually, originally, Champions and STO did have a good system. It was dead long before Neverwinter came along, though. In those there were vanishingly rare grab bag drops. No key system. The bags would drop in game, and you could roll the dice for whatever was in the bag. Or... you could buy them.

The problem was (and still is, with Cryptic's lockboxes), the chances for getting anything good was terrible. STO still has a .5% drop rate for prize ships. That is to say, each unique ship in a lockbox costs ~200 bucks.

The other problem was that they quickly jumped over to lockboxes, meaning they'd clog up your inventory, and then accost you for keys. And if you accidentally double clicked on one, you'd get the store interface vomited up in front of you.

    Not happiness.

I was speaking of seasonal events, like Wintersday and Mad King's Day (Christmas and Halloween). Each of them came with a new kind of box, and inside the box there were prizes and a new currency to trade for more prizes (but you needed several stacks of it). So. Many. Currencies. And while we could farm them for the duration of the event, they were also sold in bulk in the cash shop. The boxes the champion trains farmed didn't go to the cash shop, at least not back when I played.

This year's Witches' Festival in ESO will have us farming bags that have prizes too. If theses bags end up in the Crown Store for the duration of the event, then it will not be so different from GW2, except seasonal events in GW2 were much larger.

Big groups farmed the champs in the game, in different zones, always through certain routes, hence why it was named the champ train. Anyone getting in their way to do other events were abused & told to go away in no uncertain terms.

Also if they drop in game. Holy *** ***, I hate lockbox drops.

The only game that used a lockbox system that wasn't godawful was DCUO. And that was only because subscribers could crack the boxes for free. A system like that, I could live with... anything else? Not so much. Especially if they're sticking new stuff in those boxes.

GW2's boxes really left a bad taste on my mouth, even if they were dropped and not necessarily bought. Every event ended up consisting in farming boxes for the duration of the event because almost every new cosmetic was in the stupid boxes. I absolutely hate it.

Fortunately this game does not have the same type of dynamic events GW2 has. Yes, the game became very toxic because of what you mentioned, which of course lead to a lot of nerfs.

So, this would be a bad time to point out that we know there's an October Halloween event coming? We've already seen it on the PTS?

One event does not equate to the gw2 champ trains, etc.

There are moments when I'm honestly glad I got burned in GW, when I had an IRL buddy who got really creepy in association with the game and basically stalled out my ability to advance and finish the main story.

This, oddly, is not one of those moments, because I have no idea what the champ trains are.

Big groups farmed the champs in the game, in different zones, always through certain routes, hence why it was named the champ train. Anyone getting in their way to do other events were abused & told to go away in no uncertain terms.
Lets hope nothing like the above happens in this game.

Okay, yeah, I saw some of that in TSW.

I am generally against lock boxes I hate the lottery rng for exclusive items as a collector. That said there are ways to make it still good $$ and a tad more consumer friendly. They could make it so you cannot get duplicates which would go a long way to help.

Providing stuff dropping, is not bound on pick up.

This year's Witches' Festival in ESO will have us farming bags that have prizes too. If theses bags end up in the Crown Store for the duration of the event, then it will not be so different from GW2, except seasonal events in GW2 were much larger.

And hopefully, we won't get banned over snowflake jewelry.

    OMG I remember that lol

Though to be fair, it was kinda obvious that it was an exploit.

Also, I almost forgot. GW2 had the "Black Lion Chests" or something like that that dropped out in the world, but you needed a key to open it and the key only dropped from certain quests. People would make new characters and burn through the first few quests to farm the keys, because the alternative was buying keys in the cash shop.
GW2 let you buy the cash currency with gold, though, so some people also just farmed gold for that.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:

Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Haha. Still going on, key farming.

To be honest, I was always afraid that was what ESO would ultimately do, when it went F2P. And, because I came from Cryptic, I kinda expected they'd simply ration the existing lockpicks out of the game and expect you to pay for them, so as a result, I've ended up with something like 5k of the things that I've been hoarding compulsively.

Seems really unlikely now, but I can't bring myself to toss all those picks.
