I am in the same boat as you buddy, I'm not bitter, but that doesn't make it any less true. They took the server down yesterday for maintenance, if they had a bad block or a block going bad, identify it then.
<24 hours later and it has to be pulled down again? I don't care how much you pray to murphy, that should never happen.Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.0 -
Cronopoly✭✭✭✭✭No telling what occurred, after 21 years running one of the (US) largest Data Centers it could be anything.
Typically most problems are due to Change.
Examples:
Firewall NAT issue after being touched and reverted back to a default setting making network translations too small for user traffic across the firewall(s). IE no network data is getting through.
Shared Storage SAN (Optically connected Hard Drive cluster Frames - typically EMC etc) - Touched and reconfigured/repartitioned in real-time leading to degraded performance IE single path or 50% bandwidth to hard drives or worse different class services getting shared on the same Hard Drive spindles / controllers. (Dev & Prod)
Database Stats forgotten to be run. SQL Indexes degraded in performance for database access.
Someone running a bad SQL query on the database using a Temp memory object that collects 100's of GB of Query data...oops - crashes system as all memory in server is consumed. - trust me it occurs way too often as devs like to play in production systems as soon as they get their coffee in the morning.
Network Spanning Tree Loop, (IE dead Network) as a network cough "engineer" plays with ports in the middle of the day and tries to get himself fired. (Most never admit their goofs and clear logs (Olly North) and go on coffee break, while everyone else runs around like crazy)
DHCP mishap or duplicate IP. Someone decides to create a brand new server with a hardcoded IP address and didn't check with (whoever Owns the IP Map), and creates a duplicate IP address the same as a production server...IE both systems become unuseable on the network. Occurs every now and then to keep everyone on their toes. there's excellent tools to manage this but typically mgmt doesn't want to pay for it.
Programmer creating a new "unpulled" Data Queue datatype where data gets put on a Data Queue by one production Engine process and another Engine process pulls the data off the queue. Except in the case of the problem, the "Pulling" Engine program was never updated to pull that datatype off the queue, so the Data Queue grows slowly over time until eventually it fills up to the set Max size crashing the system, typically 24 hours after the last patch maintenance...sigh.
So many more issues of all types that "Prevent the right data from getting to the right place at the right time." My quote on what all IT incidents share symptom wise.
Tell your kids(those of you who aren't kids yourselves) not to go into IT infrastructure...thankless job and commonly outsourced to partner groups whose best interest lies in their being problems and them being the hero periodically and of course not permanently fixing anything...just rebooting...
I could write a book. 21 years and well over 16,000 IT incidents on record my team managed and countless 24/7 war rooms.
