Yep, @yodased is correct. Usually a server reboot takes around an hour.

Hah, every time I see something like that I remember that if the service I'm developing will go down for that long - my employer will just kill me.

They have to reboot that monster.

I bet your service runs on AWS or some other arch, which would take even longer if went down.

My service runs on hundreds of machines across three datacenters, two of which are direct property of my employer.

I haven't tried it on yet, but it does look to be that way. The shorts that I got yesterday are pretty nice. I just need to buy new pants as my old ones are starting to get holes

WOW JUST HAD AN UPDATE AND SERVERS GO DOWN.
there is a thread going on about bid spying and that is against the TOS but they do nothing for that, we pay for a game that they cant get bugs fixed or that they DON'T ANSWER to the people about real issues such as the kiosk. but they do answer to jokes. Really ZOS cant you answer the threads about the TOS violations that i have seen they sent you a program to show you that it is being violated. i don't know about others here but i pay good money to play a game that is down for 6 hours on maintenance day and then i go to play the next day and its broke again right after a 6 hour maintenance which was a 118 mb upload. I really cant see 6 hours for 118 mb update that it should have been able to see this issue today and have been prevented.Why don't you have preventive maintenance done. being a programmer and knowing that before you implement a test on the test severs to see if the update is going to cause issues i would think the people you have working for you should be able to prevent these issues and see codes that are being used and by who to stop issues. or maybe you need some new programmers!!!!!!

Argh, me too. I have like, two pairs of shorts with pockets that aren't decrepit, and three pairs of pants. And yet, I find myself waiting for a deep discount sale anyway. My jeans all managed to tear in the same place probably because of how I sit. <_<

Well if your saying Bid spying in terms of Trader Kiosks in the game then it cant happen anymore ZOS fixed that only way a "member" or Individual can see a Guilds bid, is by having access to see it by the Guilds Leader.

Another Internet Lawyer/Programmer who has not heard about the latest craze....paragraphs! Whenever the servers go down I find that I am playing with hundreds of programmers! You sure seem to know a lot about how these things work!

I had to throw away a good pair of shorts recently due to the hole getting bigger and bigger I have about 5 brand new shorts in total. Now I need to focus on the pants.

Re: "long" maintenance times for small changes:

In development, there's a thing called regression testing. Unit testing, which is faster, just tends to verify that logic checks out and is pretty much completed by a machine that just verifies that 1+1 = 2, or adding "cat" to "dog" produces "dogcat". Regression testing, however, is best summarized as "making sure your changes didn't break anything else". Even a one-liner could somehow affect some other system way down the line in a potentially catastrophic way. As an example, the company I interned for updated a library that controlled the CSS - and we found out that disabling a style that controlled, say, the context menu appearance would end up producing different grid appearances in Chrome and Firefox. (Trying to not be 100% accurate here but capture the spirit of the thing). A unit test won't capture that, but a regression test would. I imagine they do some last-minute regression testing on the live server to try and prevent some game-breaking bug from raising its ugly head. Buuut I am not ZOS, instead spitballing.

Also, Live is different from their RC server. Different configuration, probably a buttload of more moving parts, and it's even possible that even though ZOS (presumably) strives to make the RC server mirror Live as closely as possible, a change or two might be on RC but not have made it to Live. Then they gotta presumably bring each moving part up, one by one, and make sure that every piece is reporting for duty and not slacking off. All in all, it probably is a lot of work making sure that that 100 megabyte patch gets in without breaking anything major.
