I don't like people knowing it. I see no reason why that should be public. It is half of my log-in info, after all. It's bad enough that guildmates can see it, but now everyone?

They can whisper me even after I change characters? The @name should be a personal thing, as it was before.

I still don't understand your issue. If you feel embarrassed because of your @name you might as well ask the support to change it for you. Other than that I don't see a reason why you would even care if someone knows or not. It is kinda to be expected in an MMO that your account name will be visible in some form.

Half of your log in doesn't matter even if they had the full thing, they would also need to know your email address, and the password for that. Or be using your computer.

When I heard nameplates were a thing, I thought I could customize what showed up above people's heads when I targeted

No, it is expected that your character name will be visible. I'm not ashamed of my @name, I just don't want people to know. It's a privacy issue.

When I heard nameplates were a thing, I thought people could customize what showed up above their heads when others targeted them. Like CP, title, guild etc... BUT NOOOOOO. That's not what name-plates are at all

The @name was never personal. You can see everyone's @name if you put them on ignore anyway. And if someone bothers you, you can still put them on ignore or go in offline mode.

Unless your email credentials are extremely similar (and obvious) to your @ username, security won't be an issue. If troll whispers persist beyond switching toons, then an ignore would be in order I'd think.

Is there an option to adjust our UI not to see these names ? I don't care that mines showing if people want to see it cool . I just don't want to read all that myself . Meh immersion gets rekt .

I don't mind having the OPTION of displaying my @name. If people want to do that that is fine by me. But forcing everyone's @names to be visible.. too much.

And I don't want to put people on ignore lists just for whispering me. I just don't want that to happen.

I agree with the OP. I neither wish to have my account name on display nor to see anyone else's. It may be something people are used to on consoles but it isn't expected on PC titles, nor is it remotely necessary.

Your @name was always visible tru add ons and even with the gamepad mode so nothing changed really.

Also, let's talk about the design of the thing, too. Why is the title next to the @name? Last time I checked, titles do not carry over from one character to the other.

@Roehamad_Ali I'm pretty sure that's what the "prefer character name or prefer account name" setting is for, so you set it on what you prefer to see. Should be under nameplates settings.

The nameplate system is entirely different! In order to change that toggle, you need to enable the whole nameplate system. Which adds odd-looking, floaty blue text over everyone's heads. That this doesn't look right to begin with. But even with it disabled... you see other people's @names

Oh AdmiralSam you are right! Sorry! I remembering fiddling on PTS with it and seeing that option. I guess I just assumed it would switch everything, obviously not the case.

I (incorrectly) assumed that nameplates would let you customize what others see about you. Not what you can see of others... This is upsetting. I wanted to wear my guild tabard proudly, but there is no point since 90% of the people will never "opt into" the nameplate system :( I feel cheated

    The OP is correct.

I have never played an MMO that used a system like this. Not only is it half my login info which is a security issue. It's confusing as there's no way to know the character name of the people in chat untill they are friended.

Why not just use character names in chat? There is no change in how the chat, economy or forums work and an increase in both account security and ease of player to player identification/interaction.

I see no justifiable reason for other players to know my login user name. It serves no in game purpose in that isnt covered better by use of character names. Even if a character used in some scandalous fashion is deleted, there is still a log of the character/account action.

Except I'm in a 500 member trade guild, 98% of the people in it are strangers to me some of which I've had heated discussion with at one time or another. I'm still not worried about anyone seeing my account name.

That's fine. My point is not that you shouldn't be able to display your @name if you wanted to. I'd just like it if there was an option to hide it if you didn't. Is that hard to understand?

I don't think I have problem with it but I think it is kind of stupid if you ask me. Why the change?

My name will now show as:
    [@vamp.emily]Vamp Emily

why not just Vamp Emily it looks cleaner/better that way. But then again I like to know who I am playing with in PvP, some people create new characters and I can never tell if it was someone I used to play with before. So the change maybe good for me.

That, again, is "meh". That would still require some effort from you to find out. Now it's out there in the open. It bothers me and others.
