How Does Obsidian Shield Work?

My only thorough experience is with a Sorcerer and I know that the Hardened Ward scales off your Max Magicka pool. Does Obsidian Shield, and the morph I'm using Fragmented Shield work the same way? As a Vet2 with 17k+ max magic the numbers are telling me the shield is only giving me 5200 points of damage absorption. Is this normal, or am I missing something and the Damage Shield for Dragonknights work differently?

It scales off of health. IIRC, it says that in the tooltip.

:/ Well that's great. How am I supposed to be an effective Magicka Dragonknight then if I have to find some way to get my max health up without having to resort to splitting my attributes. Do I just give all of my gear health enchants? Wear armor sets with max health bonuses?

Nope. You use the shield with the morph for major mending. We use it exclusively for that buff. Pop igneous > heal. Dat little 2k shield in cyro is going to be b**** slapped away in about 0.000000000001 seconds.

Wait until you try a nightblade--we don't have any class shields.

Most users of the DK shields are tanks. It's virtually never used by a DK DPS (unless they're doing Maelstrom, and there, it's of limited usefulness).

Sorcs are unique in the extent to which shields factor into their defense. You shouldn't play other classes like you play a sorc and expect to shield through everything. Hardened Ward is a bit OP, and you're simply not going to have anything like that when playing any other class.

And here I thought each class had a Damage Shield similar to each other's. That's practically my playstyle.

So then how should my Dragonknight be kitted out? Do I need to have some of my attributes put into Health? And what do you suggest my Champion Points go into?

I thought it did too but it actually doesn't, at least the current version (though it probably should):
Call the earth to your defense, granting a damage shield for you and nearby allies that absorbs 3092 damage. Your own damage shield absorbs 100% additional damage.

The skill and its morphs all use 15.5% max health for the shield amount so even if you managed to get an incredibly high 50k health you're only going to get a 7.8k shield from it.

The shield you get scales from max health, but the damage from the fragmented shield morph scales from max magicka.

    Because reasons.

Is there even a point to keeping it on the bar then? My Flame Lash heals me when attacking off-balance enemies so that pretty much makes up for the shield except for those drawn out boss fights where the hits keep whittling you down the longer it takes.

In PvP I only use it for the half second of crit resistance, the healing buff, and the stam return from using it. I don't use it as a "shield" since my actual shields block more damage then my class skill

Obsidian Shield is practically useless on a DPS bar, outside the major mending buff.
It's outright useless in PvP where a single light attack will knock it off and in PvE it doesn't fair much better. Either way, it's a DPS loss to use it as a DPS character. If you want to be a shield stacker, stick to Sorcs.

It has its uses, and isn't used for the shield only:
    - It is the cheapest Earthen heart ability that doesn't require a target
    - As an Earthen heart ability, it gives 5% stamina back, minor brutality, and some ultimates
    - Small shield is better than no shield at all
    - Major mending, better Vigor/Coagulating blood

But I agree that, as an ability with "Shield" in it, having it used for the utility and not the shield itself is self explanatory.

That's true for many builds, but not all. A pure magicka build can easily spam the shield, and while it's not all that strong, it still can't be crit. Even casting it once or twice is enough time to turn the tide of battle, which is something I can personally attest to. I'm not saying it's an ideal shield, just adding in my two septims. The magicka build I have for my DK in cyro is pretty effective. Of course, every build has it's strengths and weaknesses.

I use obshield for the stam you get. Sometimes, I'm almost dead, with no stam to block and my ult is almost full (Dragon Leap) and bam! Use the shield, heavy attack then Dleap. It has literally turned battles around from loss to win.

What they need is to boost the shield though. Most magicka Dk's know what it's like to hit someone else without making a dent in their health bar only to lose half of your's in one hit.

Wet noodle flame lash + cotton candy shield = tough work.
