WHY bind items

I am somewhat confused as why items get bound when tried on. Why can't used equipment be sold, or even given away?? At times I would like to simply try something on to see what it looks like. Even in real world we are allowed to try clothes on before we commit to them, so why not here?
I think it places major limitations on great items.

hum ... i'm not sure i understood ... you want give or trade all item you loot ? so .. you want sell maesltrom weapon when you loot him ?

I have never played other MMOs, but my understanding is that bind on use helps the economy. The game would be saturated with all gear if people could use and then sell.

It seems that part of a healthy MMO economy is the destruction of wealth to avert inflation. We see this in the percentage cuts that the game takes from guild store sales. We see this in the money used on bids for guild store locations. Another thing people want to avoid is extreme deflation, which is why there is no global auction house/store. I suppose bind on equip could help fight deflation by decreasing supply on the market.

I'm not sure why that would matter for some random common blue drop belt. I guess traits still have value.

Someone else with more MMO experience could better explain.
