Microsoft Supports Cross-Platform Play

"Microsoft has announced its support for Cross-Network Play, allowing Xbox owners to play games with anyone on PC or PlayStation." This was one of the reasons that there has been no cross-platform support for ESO (that being, Microsoft wouldn't allow it). Now that Microsoft have given the green light for it, such things may be possible. Would you like to see ZOS implement cross-platform play opportunities, if their servers could be adjusted to support it? No guarantee that they could, of course, as their servers may not be capable of it.

Console players would make good cannon fodder for PC players I guess?

I can't see them doing this though. Not sure the servers are stable enough.

I think console/PC would be unlikely, but perhaps PS4/XB1 would be possible. I agree on the server stability issue though.

I'm going to say YES, of course.

However, I think there would be some issues, the biggest one being the fact that PC players have add-ons and console players don't. Some people might not be too happy with that.

We already lost a bunch of add-on features from PC players who did not want to use add ons complaining that those who did had extra features.

Console users going after PC users because of add ons sounds like it would be a mess.

People on pc are confident. Ever heard the expression life will find a way? Too many people on console kill you in 1s flat. XB now has macro / animation cancelling buttons now built in an endorsed by MS. Nowadays you die and don't even see the attacks happen lol. Number watching doesn't save you at all. Backed up by the number of QQ posts made daily on here.

I play games solely on PC. And I've played other cross-platform games with console gamers before.

No thanks. I'd like to stick to PC-only servers, thank you.

@Enodoc The console MMORPG competition supports crossplay. It would be foolish not to at least at some point down the road. PC players would absolutely slaughter console players though. The PC PvP is much faster pace. DC Universe Online just launched crossplay between Playstation Network and PC players. I actually didn't notice any down time either except during scheduled maintenance. Probably the most successful feat like that in a long time.

Not sure if it would be a good idea from the standpoint of anything competitive (PVP, leaderboards) as PC players have the advantage of addons. It sure would be nice to be able to play with some of the console folks from the forums though...

I'm all for one big world we all play in! Not sure any of my add-ons give me any advantage other than the advantage of convenience. I play on a controller most days anyway! Maybe I'm a hybrid player. Lets do this thing!

Consoles being able to play together would be awesome. I don't want the PC and Consoles to mix, however.

Please no NPCs already take too long to load in some areas especially undaunted enclaves (PvE) there are too many people that it lags servers (both) PC has a significant advantage due to addons like buff trackers health displays *cough* macros *cough* (PvP) and store monitoring for prices plus there are already issues with trade monopolies without combining all platforms (PvE).

I don't know about PC players, addons and better hardware configuration might be an issue.
(Not only talking about PvP but everything, Trial leaderboards, weekly reward ect)
I would love the competition but it has to be fair.

PS4\XB1 however, yes, if it happens it's gonna be crazy.

While Microsoft may allow it there's still the PlayStation agreements to be addressed. Speaking from game development experience it's far less profitable for a development house to release a game on the Playstation Network that allows for cross-platform gameplay. In some cases consent is outright refused, meaning the only option is to set up specific servers for the Playstation community.

Coincidentally there were previously no restrictions preventing developers releasing cross-platform games on the Xbox One, it is entirely up to the game developer to support multiple account systems to facilitate cross-platform gameplay and implement the infrastructure required. The only difference now with the introduction of Cross-Network Play is Microsoft are now providing a development framework to make it easier for indie developers to implement in their titles.

Microsoft have had support for cross-platform gameplay available to developers for quite some time now. Visual Studio has had in-built support for Unity 3D's excellent cross-platform capability as well as the ability to target iOS and Android apps directly since VS2013. The MSDN site has a number of articles going back over more than 10 years covering various aspects of cross-platform game development.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Microsoft have never been the obstacle here.

Well, considering that Microsoft has been working on Xbox/PC cross-play for a while (part of their Unified OS strategy), this is the next logical step.

With the next several updates to their systems, we're going to see quite a bit more cross-play capabilities between the Xbox One and the PC communities.

Microsoft even has plans to make the Xbox One "immortal" by creating upgrades for it that allow a Gamer to upgrade their Xbox One in the same manner as PC players upgrade their PC's.

Gaming has a bright future indeed, but I don't see why this wouldn't be possible as well.

It wwould only be a win win until the console players got all up in arms over PC uses having add-ons that made it unfair for them.
THEN we'd lose our add-ons.

Not really. Remember, Microsoft and several developers are very much in support and developing code to support add-ons and mods for the Xbox platform.

Once Xbox/PC cross-play is in full swing, expect that the Xbox would have add-ons as well.

Take my add-ons from PC so that console players won't complain - and I quit paying my sub and I'll just play something else.

I have no desire to get nerfed to comply with a lower hardware common denominator.

Don't worry, the screen door wont hit me on my way out.
I learned long ago how to handle it.
