I currently have a 5-3 male-female split. I will be replacing one male character with a new build. I'll figure out the gender when I get there. Going to swap my second magicka sorc with a stam sorc. Seems silly to have 2 slots for the same thing.

    Yes, I play my gender.
Yes. Maybe because when I was growing up I hardly ever had the option to play as a female in video games, I don't know. But I don't make them look like me or anything, they are all their own person entirely.

I only play male characters when I have no choice, or when I'm playing a game with gender-locked classes and I really want to play as a class that is for male characters only (like my Bard in Ragnarök Online).
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

My create-a-characters usually don't represent me. It's me basically playing with GI Joe's or dolls. So if I'm putting 100+ hours into looking at someone's backside, I make it a sexy female, with the donk, if possible.

Plus, the "Ripley" affect is just more interesting to me story wise.

For characters I play as my mains, yeah, I'll stick to my gender for immersion.

However, I do participate in the roleplaying community, and I sometimes will host events or missions that require a throwaway character. In those cases, gender doesn't matter, as I'm effectively creating whatever controllable NPC is needed for the story.

I'm male in real life, and my main is female. But I'm 90% sure that I take her mantle when chat in Cyrodiil.

In real life I'm a silent, quiet person who keeps to himself.

Sola is opposite to me in many ways, but sometimes I do act like her in game.

That being said, I do have 8 toons, 5 male, 3 female.

I'm a guy and have 4 male and 3 female characters.
When I create a char I always have an idea of what it should look like when it's finished, armor-, build- and stylewhise. I'm also trying out different stylecombinations, not for a "sexy-" but for a unique and well-rounded look and I never put the "specific" sliders on max. I started to play female chars because I didn't like the look of male elves and I didn't have an idea of how they should look in the end, however I'm trying now with my V5 Altmer Templar.

I'm female and so far only have 1 toon - my lovely Dark elf, she is glorious and as Abeille said, when I was a younger gamer we were NEVER given the OPTION to play as a strong & adventurous female force so now I am really enjoying seeing her as a different side of myself who can explore and kill as she pleases! :) I might eventually try to create a good looking male Nord that will be a homage to my husband so I can try to see how it feels to run Tamriel as male, but I have a feeling I will always prefer to play female!

7 out of 8 characters are female. I have one guy, but I really suck at making dudes and Haan definitely shows it. Hes derpy AF. lol But I keep him around bc he was one of my first characters (so 2yrs old) and my master crafter. Hes earned the right to stay.

Also, I second what @Divinamama said... growing up playing as guys because there weren't many female options, being able to make a badass chick is so much fun to me!

I play a mixture. I don’t really think of them as representing me to other people in game. I think of them as fictional characters that I’m creating, and I rather enjoy imagining different backgrounds, different mindsets and preferences - it spices up the way I play each of them, choosing different options, different tactics etc. which fit their personalities. I have a couple more guys than I do girls: 13 males - 11 females (I’m female) because I just happened to get good ideas for them.

I usually make a male and a female in Elder Scrolls games, but since there are three alliances I've ended up with two males and a female. I'll have to balance that out next single player game I think!

I know some people think it's strange my main character is a male when I'm a female, but it isn't weird to me at all because my characters are their own entities and not representative of myself.

In single player games I do it like you - I select the gender after what I think is best suited to the role he/she is taking on. In an MMO I prefer to play my gender, because it is easier for people to deal with me, if they know I am female rather than male. They are not that rude and avoid cursing with a female around. I rather communicate with people in a polite way than that I would want to be involved in a rude male talk - at least I think that is rude, but it might not feel the same for men.

    Play both genders.

    edit__

Now that I think about it, I guess dudes talk to each other differently when they think they're talking to another dude. My assumption has always been that it doesn't matter what gender I pick, male gamers automatically assume said other person is a dude. So far in my gaming life this has been true. I've never had someone run up to me asking me to clairfy who I am IRL, cuz frankly who cares.

I've been trolled (I should say attempted because I don't rly respond. I've never had a troll not get bored and bugger off after awhile of no response from me) like...maybe once for being a girl gamer and it was sort of weird how they got to that assumption because I said a joke about Saints Row The Third. If you've ever played SRTT the game includes a lot of styles and outfits and a TON of character customization. I made a joke about how my friend would start a war with the military while I was changing my clothes and I would get totes shot up and murdered in the clothing store. More or less a joke about my friend sort of trolling me. Said troll's assumption was because I dare customize my character in SRTT I must like shopping and thus is female. And the trolling ensued for how short it went on. :/

welp, other than that weird one-off mishap, I never really relate the gender of a character to the gender of the player. You can usually tell how the talk. ladies tend to use more emotes. dudes tend to be very short and to the point. i wouldn't say either one curses more than the other.

If we only had one character slot, then yeah, I'd probably play a male.

But since we have eight characters sharing bank space and coin, I made a team. Three male, three female, and twin pumpkins which are functionally monoecious but still argue about which came first the seed or the flower.

    Yes, I play my gender.
I'm a dude in real life, and I personally can't see myself playing as a girl. To me, I consider my character to be an aspect of me. My main character, which is the nord Templar, was made to look like me IRL. However, I messed up by making him a little too buff and my character only slightly resembles me. Even in other games besides ESO, I've always been a male character; unless of course if gender is not an option like Metroid.
