That's as good a piece of feedback as any ;)
In theory though (haven't tried yet), you should just have to select that item when choosing your style.

When I was checking out a new set crafting station earlier to look at the bonuses, I noticed in creation screen there was a little check box under the "style" part where it looked as though you could check it to use a crown mimic stone instead of whatever style mat - it looks as though you still have to select the style you want of course.

I haven't actually tested it yet and am currently trapped hiding in a building after a failed safebox cracking attempt, I'll give it a try when my bounty clears and I can get out of the building, and let you know :D

EDIT: Yes, it works exactly as I thought - at a crafting bench in the creation screen, check the little yellow box that says "crown mimic stone", the style bar then turns yellow and you can select any style that you know - it will use the stone instead of the in-game style mat.

It is easy to get, and easy to use. It is not obvious how to use it until you need to use it, and then it is pretty obvious.

I would be interested in knowing what the projected Crown costs are, and whether all three of the stack sizes will be in the final Live version. I bought the big one, but would probably tend to want the small one since I don't want them on hand (to be spent accidentally) and tend to only craft a few things at one time.

Can you use this Stone to mimic piece's of gear that do not require motif's? For example Helmet of Anguish or other rare dolmen gear item's?

The item is fine, but its name doesn't seem in keeping with Elder Scrolls Lore. "Mimic" in particular makes me think of the monsters that pretend to be chests from SquareEnix games, and I am aware that the word has been used for monsters going all the way back to DnD.

Perhaps instead of "Mimic" the name could be evocative of Illusion or Alteration magic?

Easy to acquire, but unable to use at any crafting station outside the new TG area. But that's a bug more with the crafting stations outside the TG than anything else.

I like it. You still need the motif to craft, but not can use these new stones instead of spending hours farming the drops in areas you normally wouldn't spend time.

    2 thumbs up!

What? Mimic means to copy. (As in "some parrots are good mimics of noises or voices" or "this stone mimics style materials" or "this monster mimics a chest" to use your example.) Which is what the stone does. It's nothing to do with any particular lore, just part of English vocabulary.

Easy to buy and use. It is the first time I've been able to craft Mercenary gear, cos in live I never get any laurel, so this was super fun to see. I also crafted a whole set of Glass, just because I could. B) I can't wait to be able to make more things in the live game. I look forward to spending some Crowns on these stones. Great idea!

I found some Covenant motifs in the IC, I bought hundreds of mats with TVs, went back to Stormhaven to craft people some sexy looking armour.
I got to the crafting station only to discover I had no style material. Popped open the crown store, purchased the mimic stone and I was on my way.
    It's definitely a time saver.

When reading about it at first I thought it was going to be some sort of transmog item, would be cool since with the new outlaw motif I definitely want to use that great sword, but would rather just be able to turn my gold willow's path (redguard style) greatsword into the new Outlaw style, but I guess I'll just have to acquire 150 new ingots and 8 new alloys... Well, it's nice I guess, but idk, kinda want to be able to change the appearance of the weapons I already have instead of using so many mats just to change my look.

Quite disappointed with this item to be honest. I thought it was going to allow us to change the appearance of already crafted clothing but it's sole purpose seems to be a wildcard in case you run out of a certain crafting material.

I have style crafting materials coming out of my ears so this seems pretty useless, except for maybe a new player whose low level and hasn't yet had the chance to go to the places where the rare style materials may drop. I literally throw out dozens of style materials each day and the price on them is rock bottom because everyone else has tons of them too.

Most of the items are easy to get and you can buy what you're missing, again except for new players. And they don't need to worry about how their gear looks while leveling THAT badly.

Now if we could change already crafting clothing with this? Then it would be useful.

    Added use for Mimic Stone:

Add a "Reforge" tab to crafting.

Place item A in one slot, place item B in another slot, place mimic stone in last slot. Press reforge.
Item A maintains its stats but gains the appearance of item B, mimic stone is consumed. Item B is destroyed. Item A becomes bound.

Works on ALL(crafted AND non crafted) armour and weapons as long as they are of the same type.

The people who want the option to change item appearance due to vanity will get it, Mimic stone gains an additional use and will become permanently needed as new sets will be released so more mimic stones will be bought from the crown store which means more money for ZOS.
    Win - win.

Same here, I knew what it was but I was disappointed you didn't make a step further by creating an item allowing us to change our armor pieces style with the motifs we know (as @Sidney said). This would add BIG value on motifs and also give new incomes (yay) to the crown store + awesome possibility for the players (this is just why every other MMO has this feature....). I'd rather have this feature for free but if this is the only way you guys are going to do it someday just put the damn thing in the crown store...

    @slumber_sandb16_ESO

If you have to craft an entire item just for the purpose of transmogrifying one item to the second items appearance, it's not that far off from just having to re-craft your item. Still have to get a bunch of materials and re-craft. The higher the material is, the more chance it is to look different so we can't even just use the lowest materials available. We then would have to go find out what level the material is that we want it to look like and craft it to be sure.

The stone, since we pay for it with crowns/real money, should be the only required item and then we use a menu/selection system to pick the style and the sub-style (Level). If we're going to have to pay for these items using our real money, it should be removing the need for wasting any more materials at all or we may as well save our real life money and just farm new mats to build a new item completely.

What I wrote was more about non-crafted items. For crafted items you could just add the style material and then pick what level of the appearance you want like you said.

Yep, just fine. You check the crafting section and there it is. As for use that's also fine, you check the box and you can craft anything using that stone. It's a very elegant solution.
    • Do you have any other general feedback?
You would do well to let us transmogrify our gear using these stones. Sometimes we just want to change our style and having dropped millions of gold on sets that just isn't viable. Allowing us to change the style of items with a mimic stone would bring in a lot of money for you guys and make the player base pretty happy I think.

Great idea and I'm sure it will see some use with the harder-to-obtain trait stones, but I'm with the others in that I'm also looking for a more comprehensive solution to restyling needs. Unlike many others, though, I wouldn't want it to be a single-use item like these stones, but rather something that is more dynamic like dyes, so I have more freedom with my looks without dropping thousands of dollars on stones. A Khajiit's whims are very fickle, yes?

I would be totally fine with something requiring a large investment of materials, of course, but I think it should be similar to the dye system in that it's infinite uses once you're fully invested. Maybe by investing some quantity of trait stones you permanently unlock restyling that style for that character, provided they also know the motif? That would also be a good way to tie in these mimic stones. I'd rather spend a few bucks in the crown store than try to grind out all the Dwemer Frames and Malachite Shards that I'd need for that kind of a system. Thoughts?

When I first read about this new feature, I was hoping it would allow for changing the motif of any armor or weapon, crafted or not, and I was really excited about it. Specifically for dropped (or purchased) sets that I wanted or have, but can't stand the look of the armor itself. For example, I used Morag Tong and Hawk's Eye gear, both of which had really terrible styling... I would have loved to be able to change the look of that gear to a motif I actually liked. As it was I ended up constantly running around in a costume instead so that I wouldn't have to look at my ugly armor.

Finding out that the mimic can only be used on crafted gear is definitely a bit of a let down.

This item is COMPLETELY NONSENSE if doesnt let you change existing gear. And more if you take into account the insane amount of mats needed for v16. ZOS change this stone and let us change EXISTING gear into any style(that of course you should know) and you will sell this stone a lot. If not, this is just a waste.

I like this idea. The one complication I can see--would this be only on motifs you've fully unlocked, or would it be a per-item type cost? EX: If I know Chest, Gloves, and Staves in Glass, and nothing else, do I pay a handful of Malachite for each of those or do I have to get the rest of the Glass chapters to make it restylable? The former would be annoying for people who are missing one or two chapters (Xivkyn Legs, I'm looking at you), but the second would be expensive in terms of materials.

lol who knows ZOS would have to indicate that it's even on their radar. I mean, ideally yeah, it would be a per-piece cost kind of thing. And ideally the cost of the whole would be broken down evenly into the cost of the parts. Or maybe they'd do something like what they did with the Akaviri motifs, and some pieces would require a higher investment than others. Endless possibilities. I just hope they actually pick one. x_x

EDIT: And of course we should be able to pick gear level/armor type, too, so that even if we're stuck in light armor for 6 months while the PvP meta swings towards magicka, we can still keep our signature looks in heavy or medium armor. If that's a thing. Which it should be.

I agree that there should be a transmogrify item available, and perhaps they could re-work the mimic stone to include this.

However, I still like the idea of the mimic stone, as some of the style stones aren't easy to come by. Especially as a solo player who has no interest in Undaunted or running group dungeons ad nauseam. That said, I'll probably just purchase Laurels in-game from other players, since they will become unbound.
