Reasons not to Tank in ESO(Both Group and Solo Play), Is it not Attractive?

There are too many negatives to being a tank.
    HA is pointless.
In PvP, tanks are just annoying more than a threat as their damage is so low that it really doesn't matter in most situations.
Nerf after nerf after nerf makes an already tedious job even more tedious and less enjoyable.
Content is so easy a caveman can do it. Or in this case 3 DPS+healer.

Where's the positive to being a tank apart from a faster queue time in group finder? (which honestly isn't a good thing sometimes when you get stuck with bad dps/heals that just refuse to listen.)

I've always hated tanking and this game just reaffirms my hatred for the job all the more.

@Silver_Strider Super Awesome Post. I've had some fun with my Black Rose set, I just debuff the enemy and spam the crap out of Vigor and Rally. But I totally understand your concerns, I believe zenimax will add some Heavy Armor changes in Dark Brotherhood DLC; @HeroOfNone Do you know of any specifics?

not on the inside to know, but I keep tossing out ideas. we are supposed to see an improvement at some point.

In my opinion there are a few areas they could improve it with, but there are cons:

Mitigation: they need to up the unblocked mitigation. I know they didn't want to reduce hits for more than 50% of an unblocked hit, but its kinda pointless when I can wear no armor and wear high armor and get almost the same hit reduction for blocking. It also would kill PVP again with how high the regenerations are. so I'd like to see mitigation go up, but they would have to reduce block damage reduction and also reduce regenerations in PVP

Critical hits: another spot they can improve heavy armor over others is by giving an impenetrable bonus or by reducing the amount of crits enemies can do (how impenetrable used to be). this would serve as a counter to glass cannon builds. Still have issues with regenerations and heavy armor still can't do damage compared to others

Damage abilities: there should be more damage abilities specific to the tank. for example, reflection attacks that are based on how much damage you take that if you're skillful, wipe out the enemies. making guard one of those abilities, with morph options to return damage or to give a damage shield to your party would help. this may require sacrificing abilities. Also, giving extended reach and hit chance against things like dodge roll or shuffle with heavy attacks and other abilities would also help.

There is a ton you cann do with the armor bonuses and sets, but these are sort of my top 3, especially upping the mitigation while reducing regenerations across the board in PVP.

Thanks for the reply, I apologize I'm not in the forums more actively. I'm a ninja. lol. Nut I want you to know you are an invaluable resource to the ESO community. Thanks for all your great work.

I have one character who is a tank, and tanking in PVE is fun and dynamic, but I also like to play PVP with my characters and as such am thinking of respeccing him, thus he won't be tanky.

Heavy armour as a full set is literal trash in PVP, dedicated tanks are literally useless in PVP, and thus the only reason to tank is if you are a strict PVE only player. Or have a strict PVE only character. As stated above, I love playing both on all my characters, thus tanking is not one of my priorities.

Would be interesting if you could taunt in pvp. I mean fully balanced, like giving target CC immunity. Giving the target 20% more damage against you and 20% less damage to other targets.

Heavy Armor does not make my character more "Tanky"
    I like to tank and primarily play a tank, but there is an issue;

This game is 100% about dps. More dps lets you trivialize content. If you aren't dps, you really only exist to make the people who are dps better.

Tanks and healers exist only to keep dps am I e and buff them or debuff the enemies so dps can do more damage. I think this is a fundamental flaw in the game's design.

Healers are more popular because they're really just dps characters with some group healing in most cases. Pure healers are rarely if ever needed. Most healers can pull dps only slightly lower than that of a pure damage dealer.

Tanks, on the other hand, often have little to no damage dealing capability. This makes them less valuable in any content where they aren't absolutely needed due to boss mechanics.

It's because so many mechanics are oneshots no matter the hp, there's not much reason to run true tanks in them. Case in point, in norm AS, if the tank dies, I can hold it aggro pretty much forever so long as the healer is alive. The basic attacks don't mean anything and the steam can be dodged. Tank almost always dies because they don't have stam to dodge roll for some reason.

Actually wouldn't surprise me if at least some people are a bit shy to take up the mantle of tank. Your responsible. You screw up and everyone dies. Some people are chill and just like "ey honest mistake" some rage like freaking nuts. I know I was a bit shy to que as a tank. But now I know how to do it.

Another reason is that I pretty much always just make my characters with a DPS/DD build. I have one character that can actually go as tank and do it well, because of a tank build.

Heavy Armor does not make my character more "Tanky"
Alot of these are viable options. For one, Heavy armor just makes me feel like I'm wearing something slightly heavier.

For two, the block regen nerf and the fact the tanks want to make tanking all about blocking instead of mitigation. Healtanks get to go die in a corner when they were viable in the past.

ESO wants tanking to be done one way, one way only , and if you dont like it, you can leave. And them's your options.

There needs to be more depth to it. More depth to the rolls in general.

I like tanking and I have multiple tanks.

However most content in this game doesn't need a tank at all, apart from keeping the boss in the ground dots.
We were running some vet pledges last night and quickly came to the conclusion that we really didn't need a healer or a tank except for the last boss on hard mode.

My suggestion is to move the hard mode scroll from the last boss to the start of the dungeon and buff all bosses. I don't care about the trash particularly.

Then I would also make the last drop in the dungeon gold for hard mode, like in trials.

This is a good discussion... lots of people saying tanks aren't necessary yet at the same time, group finder is a horrible experience as a DPS.

I play a healer as my main because I enjoy healing, especially in ESO. I have many alts, one of which is a tank. The two reasons I don't tank more:
    1. I never want to tank new content, because often the tank is expected to lead and I have a horrible sense of direction/navigation. In and out of game. The tank isn't supposed to trail behind, which I sometimes do, even in dungeons I've run before, just because I take a wrong path or get turned around. I am directionally challenged. ;)
    2. I started taking my tank alt into non-DLC dungeons, and I enjoyed it. Then I started trying to acquire skyshards and make my alt more advanced and finish other content. Could not do anything by myself. So I got stuck in this beginner-tank phase. Honestly, without dual specs or something, it's not fun to run around the world as a tank.

I have been playing this game since beta, healing, and I've gotten pretty good at recognizing when a run is going badly due to a bad tank vs. bad DPS. A good tank is important in a lot of content... it just isn't needed for everything. I would like to see at least a few bosses in every group encounter that require real tanks and healers.

I will also say, that as much as I love healing, it has become less enjoyable as of late because of how many things are now a DPS race or mechanics-based to the point that every single person has to do the mechanic or they die regardless of what the tank or healer does. Some of that is fine. But as a healer in ESO I used to feel that my added DPS made a difference. Now I feel like my main job is to buff the DPS and wear a certain combination of gear. And keep myself alive, I guess. I have mentioned this before in another thread but seems relevant here as well.

I do think, generally speaking, in most MMOs tanks and healers are rarer than DPS, because DPS gives the instant gratification of measuring your numbers, so this will never be truly "fixed." It is harder to "prove" you are a good tank or healer, to yourself or someone else. It is also harder to see if you are advancing, or if certain gear makes a difference, and so on. Now we all know that a good parse a good DPS doesn't necessarily make, but yet DPS bragging rights is still a thing. Being a tank or healer is often a thankless job, so you really have to enjoy the role, and be the type of player that doesn't mind not having a direct measurement of your role in game.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

This is also why people build for pure DPS.

There is no reason to build for crowd control or debuff because it only helps with trash, which you really don't need that help anyway.

If I had any say I would make all CC have 2 effects. 1 is the normal effect, like immobilised, and the 2nd is some sort of debuff which is applied to monsters which are immune to the 1st effect.

    it is just boring.

standing in block for like couple minutes. throw a horn when ready. if your stam gets low ask for a spear.

    everything done....

good answer, i agree, but i would also like to add.
i played a tank for many years in other mmo's, i could never do any real meaningfull damage and i got used to the reality that that is simply how tanks are, but here in eso the Tank is doing more damage then the DPS. i feel that is just not a good idea, and it makes that class too strong in PvP but NOT in PvE.
in PvE they should be high in damage and tanking. but more on the Tank end and a touch less in damage.

i tank, although I’m new to it.
    Few fab things...
Health is key. Stamina is much like the magicka pool to me. Resist and health are king from what I see. I taunt, block the big attacks and spam light attacks for crusher. Quick magicka regen is also key,
    As for gameplay.,.
3 dps is all I seem to queue with. This game can, for the most part, be completed with just dps. Luckily, I’m into end game where tanks are still needed from time to time. Rolling dungeons is follow speeding dps to boss/taunt/block/crusher/cc/waddle to next already started battle.
For the most part, I’m not needed

My biggest problem is scaling of abilities. I want to tank in "classic way", that means my main tools are armor and health pool. But if I do that I don't do any damage, so that's why I stopped tanking.

Correct, I remember before the removal of soft and hard caps it was possible to have a good pool of health. The thing is after that change everything got uncapped, except Armor. I still to this day believe that they should have removed soft caps and raised hard caps instead of completely removing them. Also there is a lot of skills that scale with health, those used to work before the cap removal, now, who would put all their points into health?

Cuz it's f'in boring as H-E-double hockeysticks. Your only job is to pull stuff into a group so it dies screaming in agony to aoe or hold a boss in place so it can die screaming in agony to everything thrown at it. Oh yeah, you get to hit block a lot. In hard content you gotta watch a whole lot of dog poo, do mechanics, avoid bad stuff, and block a lot. All of the reasons listed in this thread about crowd control and everything else wrong makes me clap as I fully agree. Over a year ago I found it fun, loads more setups back then worked, but now there's not enough coffee in the world to keep me awake even if I tried to tank FG1. It's boring. Did I mention that already? Gonna mention it again, it's f'ing boring.

Heavy Armor does not make my character more "Tanky"
A bit OP , just my past experience tho...
An old MMORPG , Everquest , Tank is very important .
There are a lot of things that tank has to remember and perform , tanking , pulling , crowd control , mob pathing , tanks switching coordination , pick up timing from monk , bosses mechanics , blah blah blah , we even created guild tank channel , too many things to discuss in game or in raid ...

Well , in ESO , my big shield sorc is always feel better , at least in all normal level dungeons and some easy Vet dungeons . No tank and healer required actually , DPS replaces everything ...
In this game , the major priority is damage , damage skips a lot of things , just like a short cut .

I don't tank anymore , ESO tank style is bored , one more thing , non DK / WARDEN tank are pretty useless , works as ZOS intention .

ESO is too reliant on gimmicky tricks in group content (especially in DLC dungeons) that makes tanking only occasionally useful and when the tank's spot is filled by a real tank it's always a net group DPS loss, especially in normal content.

Tanking needs more group buff abilities that significantly increase the group's damage output not just by small token amounts with redundant buffs everyone else is already using. The group needs to feel noticeably enhanced when a real tank is in the party.

As long as DPS and healers can run around with enough defensive CP and self shields and other mitigation that they are pretty tanky themselves real tanks are marginalized except in the most demanding content.
