Thanks for all of your helpful replies. I should have known having the word 'Trolls' in the subject would attract some. I know better than to try and do much of anything solo in PvP. I was just annoyed by the range of the NPCs attacks and their ability ignore any obstacles in the game.
I was using a level 38 Templar with a purple restoration staff at level 38 (or with a level or 2). Since the staff did fire damage along with the solar flare or whatever the name is of the fireball-like attack that the Templar has, I would have thought that the ice trolls would have taken more damage than they did. It seemed like they were instantly regenerating the damage it did. They were level 14. So based on the advice I got from this post, armor and weapons should be better than green named items. I assume all blue named or above would work.
Safety in numbers. I may try to join up with others that offered. Why do you need a grand soul gem to revive? Those things are not cheap. I definitely was not in a veteran area. The champion system seems to throw things out of balance in the game.
I suppose my misery brought a little glee to the trolls that posted. You're welcome.

Thanks again for all of the good advice and tips.

@fractalknight you'll need a grand soul gem, due to battle levelling in pvp. You are all technically scaled to veteran, and veteran only use grand soul gems.

Restoration Staff is good for low cost healing skills.

Dual Wield swords is good for damage. If you deal damage that takes from your mana pool, then this is the weapon you'll be best suited with, so try to level that skill line up, but only take the beneficial passives.
    - it's a stamina based weapon, so the active skills are useless for you, unless you decide to play stamina build. For magicka build you only need to spend skillpoints in the passive skills. (ZOS Logic: best weapon for magicka DPS is stamina weapon...)
    - Slot world/ guild/ class skills on your dual wield bar.

Try to get set armor and weapons, it will benefit you a lot. Green quality set gear is better than legendary quality non set gear.

If your set gear is crafted, make sure you get enchantments on it, so you don't run around with a missing pool of resources.

Join guilds, get friends and socialize a little. This will benefit you a lot in the future, both for pve and pvp.

@fractalknight, here's a couple of links that can help you get better setup. find a crafter and ask them create all of your armor and weapons in two magicka sets so you get the maximum benefits from them. Also have them make 2-3 armor pieces in heavy(Chest/legs will give you the most armor for just 2 spots) and then the rest in light as it will help your magicka more. This link is for all of the special crafting stations available. Find a crafter and pay to get some magicka gear setup. For example, Kagrenac or Julianos are great sets for Templars. http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Set+Bonus+Crafting+Locations

Deltia has some really good Templar builds. Don't worry about the gear he lists, mainly look more at the attribute and skill setup. It will help give you ideas about a damage rotation that will help a lot. One Templar Skill that will save your arse a bunch is Puncturing Strikes Morphed into Puncturing Sweep. This one spell can take out an enemy and at the same time heal you a ton!

You need grand soul gems, you can buy them with alliance points from the siege merchant. The monsters are tough. Suggest you play in the non-vet pvp campaign until you hit veteran so other players are more evenly matched to you.

I went to PvP map for the first time since the console launched. I thought that the players were pretty much equal, as far as armor, weapons and skills go. So a level 38 player would be kind of evenly matched with a level 10 player. I could not kill a frost troll. It was on fire, and I could not knock out more that 10% of it's health. I know they regenerate and are supposed to have a weakness for fire, but I could not tell. I did not do much better again NPCs that were protecting a mine. I could barely see them and several, (could not count them as they were too far away) of them were range attacking me and doing damage when I was behind cover. I had no way of attacking them without being killed. Is there something I need to know before trying again? Kind of frustrating and having to respawn far away is no fun either.
Bonus frustration: Is there a trick to resurrecting someone? My friend died and the soul gem icon next to the resurrect prompt at the bottom was red. I had plenty of soul gems of different sizes. I could not resurrect my friend, yet a kindly faction ally resurrected me.

One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned is passives. I really, really can't stress this enough as I learned the hard way, too.

It's really easy to get caught up in: "Wow, new skill!" But if you don't put enough points into passives, you simply won't do enough damage. Look at the passives for your weapon and your class and start grabbing the better ones as soon as they come available. Passives will save your life. Truly.

So will provisions. And make sure you have a good mundus stone. The Warrior is a nice all-around choice because it increases your weapon damage.

I wouldn't have lol'd. I would have waited 'till he had the agro of the troll ... then run like hell.

War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

The heroes during times of war, are nothing but mass murderers during times of peace.
