So a level 38 player would be kind of evenly matched with a level 10 player. I could not kill a frost troll. It was on fire, and I could not knock out more that 10% of it's health. I know they regenerate and are supposed to have a weakness for fire, but I could not tell. I did not do much better again NPCs that were protecting a mine. I could barely see them and several, (could not count them as they were too far away) of them were range attacking me and doing damage when I was behind cover. I had no way of attacking them without being killed. Is there something I need to know before trying again? Kind of frustrating and having to respawn far away is no fun either.
Bonus frustration: Is there a trick to resurrecting someone? My friend died and the soul gem icon next to the resurrect prompt at the bottom was red. I had plenty of soul gems of different sizes. I could not resurrect my friend, yet a kindly faction ally resurrected me.

I was on my to ash and came across an AD player fighting a troll. I sat down and watched the great fight take place.
The troll walked away mostly unscathed. and I had a good day.

If you are new, you should not attempt to take out a resource by yourself, it is far too challenging. While some top-notch individuals can do it with the right builds, it's not something an average player can accomplish. You'll want to group up with your friends (or complete strangers, let's not be picky) if you want to take those out! As far as the frost troll thing goes, you may need to look into your build a bit, or possibly level up some (remember, the scaling system isn't perfect, it's just better than nothing). You might also need to practice fighting. Can you usually take out trolls your level in other zones? If not, practice on them first, and when you've figured out a good build, skill set, and overall strategy, you'll have a better foundation for doing the PvE in Cyrodiil, or maybe even start fighting other players!

I wouldn't say only "top-notch" individuals can do it. I can solo cap a resource just fine and I'm probably an above-average player at best. You just have to hit the resource the right way is all.
Start off by killing the guard and mender at the side of the tower, drawing them away from the mage and the central guards. Then use whatever ranged attack you have to kill the mage guard (if you can't get the Mage guard in a few attacks don't be afraid to move out of ranged to heal and continue).
Then all that's left is to AoE bomb and CC the guards on the flag (kill the menders first). Make sure to keep some heals on you for when your health inevitably starts dropping. If you have to, just kill the menders, retreat to heal, then kill the honour guards.
Don't think anyone can outright take a resource alone, you'll just take too much damage. Trick is to pick away at the key NPC groups individually, and then just take the flag.
Oh, and gear is, as with everything, pivotal.

Non vet PvP gives a huge advantage to people with cp and is absolute non sense. Take cp out of non vet PvP @zos

@fractalknight It sounds to me you are 38 using gear you have found. This is fine for PVE questing, but it's not going to be upto the usual standard people who are in pvp use. And it's not going to be pretty when battle levelled. I suggest being able to craft gear will make it much easier for you. The easiest way is to join a guild, learn the ropes of pvp. If you already can craft sets I suggest making an upto date set for your level before going back in. If you don't have a guild you run with checking out the recruitment sub forums at the bottom of the main forum directory is a good place to start.
It is a lot of fun once you learn the nuisances. So please don't be put off

Nonsense! It must have been a smurf in disguise. And to think you could have helped them outI was on my to ash and came across an AD player fighting a troll. I sat down and watched the great fight take place.
