Linux Support Request

I had a subscription for several months, but when I finally gave up because I hated windows too much, I quit my subscription too, and I don't intend to renew it until I can play the game on Linux.

I know there are alternatives, I did manage to get it to work with wine/playOnLinux, but the performance is really poor.
What I would really like (and many other people as I saw it) is a Linux build of this game that I can enjoy. I love this game and I had my subscription only to show my support (never even played orsinium yet, kept saving it for later). And I'm sorry I cancelled it but I wanted to show my commitment to needing a Linux build.

I'm aware it's an effort, but I believe it would be worth it. If anyone agrees please show your support so we can get a linux build for this awesome game.

Sadly, Zenimax Media has never shown any interest in Linux. None of its game development studios ever released a Linux game. In fact, ID Software used to port its games to Linux. But they haven't done a single port since they were acquired by Zenimax.

Conclusion: We won't see a Linux ESO client. Ever!

Gabe Newell to the rescue! If only he'd sell a million of his Steam Machines and goes on from there, there might eventually be something resembling a market segment to sell things to. Alas, he doesn't, so there (still) isn't.

GNU/Linux always had two major "problems", which actually constitute its strength: a hugely fractured installation base because of its bazillion distributions, and a (rightful) reputation of running really well on older machines which have been abandoned by Windows. Plus, it was never seen, nor marketed, as a gaming platform. So the intersection of a) distributions which explicitly support gaming, b) installed PCs that support minimum system specs, and c) Linux users interested in paying for and playing modern MMO titles would tend to be rather tiny -- smaller even than the OS X base, which doesn't have issues a) and b), or at least have a more uniform, and thus a better manageable, approach to them.

Anyway, the biggest problem for ZOS wouldn't necessarily be porting the base ESO client code to yet another platform --- OpenGL is already supported, and their code management system supports building for multiple platforms as well. No, it's the multitude of third party software libraries and SDKs that any modern application/game depends upon -- if they don't exist on the target platform, you just don't go ahead and implement them yourself from scratch, for various reasons. As long as GNU/Linux isn't on the radar of those third party companies -- and it probably won't be for a long time because of the reasons given above -- the platform will continue to lack tools seen as being essential to game development.

The Steam Engine and its SteamOS platform are a step in the right direction, but GNU/Linux just isn't there yet.

It's a shame. The only MMO that ran natively on Linux that I knew of was Regnum Online. While it was no where near the calibre of ESO, it was highly addictive and had some great PVP concepts. I liked it.
It was a game developed by a small company in Argentina but grew quickly and even made it onto Steam. Why? The Linux fan base flocked to it like moths to a candle. Like I said, word of mouth had got around that it was the only MMO for Linux.
I'm not going to pretend to understand the work involved in porting ESO across, but if it's not too much hassle, it would be well worth it. I would literally buy another copy just to be able to play it on Linux.

Pretty sure most of you reading this thread are geeks, just like me, so I'm going to leave you with a video made by one of the Regnum Online developers. It's their git commit history made into an animation by gource. The company behind this game were very open about their development, and I loved that.
I love this video a lot
