Worship in Tamriel: an ESO Religion Concept

I like that concept IF and only if we can choose to change our pantheon.
That would be as I see it too. Pick a diety to worship at a shrine, if you choose to dedicate to one god, or leave things open to pray where you will.
Have some option to change your "faith" later on, much like you can stop being a werewolf or vampire... people change their faith all over history, from "heathens" becoming christians in medieval times, from christians leaving the church in disillusionment to follow some other faith as happens now and then in our day... no reason it should not be possible in Tamriel as well.
    Gidorick wrote: »
I do like the idea of there being different ways to venerate the different gods. Daedra requiring sacrifices and not just blessings would be awesome!
That would be where a passives skill line shines - as you might advance it through specific actions, as well as through regular prayers at their shrines. Possibly daily questings tailored to your diety, be it killing undead for Arkay or collecting healing herbs for Mara, murdering in Mephalas name or holding a tea party with a bunny and a skeever for the glory of Sheogorath... ;)

BtW sacrifices... having to give something for something could work for all dieties. Just the nature of what they want would vary... some might be happy with a gold donation (yay, gold sink!), others might require burning of provisioning ingredients, and some may want to sacrifice a live chicken or whatever... (or possibly stand over your kill in cyrodil and use some item to dedicate it to your diety, risking being attacked while you do so, much like when you grab some resource...)
    Gidorick wrote: »
That being said, I do like the idea of a passive skill set for devoting yourself to one god. The problem with that is the sheer number of gods that should be available now and will eventually be available. And I think it should only ever be passives that are given to a player. Never slot-able active abilities. The only problem I have with passives is the idea that you are constantly blessed. I don't think any deity should be that...erm... reliable.
I kinda see it more like the passives you get from fighters or mages guild. Which may or may not involve some divine power, but certainly would reflect special training and teaching that happens during the course of worship. If you follow a healer god, it just makes sense that you'd pick up more tricks about healing even without blessing. If you follow a spider goddess, it may just be that the rituals involve drinking concortions including some small doses of spider venom, resulting in a little resistance to poison. If you follow a warrior god, it just makes sense that in the course of worship some of the older warriors following that god might mention that neat trick you can do with your shield if the enemy comes at you like -this-... et cetera.

Also, it might not only include classic "game-mechanic" passives, but other stuff. Faith daily quest unlocks. Social advantages in areas of your faith.Unlocking a faith vendor where you can purchase some extra nifty stuff (set items!) only available for true believers.

As for number of gods... maaaybe, but a lot of the "gods" in different pantheons are the same by different names after all. Akatosh = Auri-El = Alkosh, etc. The divines, or the daedric princes, merely taking up another guise... that would limit the scope somewhat. It would also mean, not every diety is avalable in every place, shrine-wise... which again is a good thing.

I'm also really digging the idea that people of a certain faith are treated differently @Taleof2Cities. That makes so much contextual sense. I have long desired ESO to be more exclusionary. More bigotry and racism please!
    Definitely that!
I mentioned social advantages of faith with the tribunal, but there could be so much more in this regard... note the malacath/trinimac schism in Orsinium... note how some faiths need to be kept quiet or you face dire consequences... (ooo, secret handshake, anyone? ;) )
Hmmm... pity the game doesn't react to clothes/costumes. Imagine the reaction if you walk into the outlaws den dressed in robes of Stendarr, god of justice...

Housing confirmed on ESO Live! yesterday. Religion/home shrines would make a nice addition!

Has anyone linked this thread in the Ask Us Anything thread for a future episode to get some dev attention. I would tag a dev here but I'm not sure who is responsible for this type of content who actually has an active forum content.

I will absolutely not support anything that requires you to 'sacrifice' earned CP points to participate in this concept. CP Points are supposed to replace VR ranks so youre essentially asking people to sacrifice a level, hours worth of gameplay in some cases, to appease a digital god. Absolutely Not. Back to the drawing board with that one.

I don't care for it either, but it's only on small (and easily detached) part of a larger concept :)

Honestly, the CP sacrificing is just me using a concept I really like.... negating leveling. I know it's unpopular.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.

I love this idea. I wish I had seen it sooner. The idea of being 100% undetectable would be perfect for the way I play

Nocturnal could make the player undetectable by guards, so they are free to rob, steal, and murder with impunity.

I like to say about my main character, beside being a cannibal, that she was born in 2E 529 3rd of Hearth Fire and she was kissed by Nocturnal, granting hey the ability to embrace the shadows and become undetected by mere mortals and even lesser daedra. She's also a follower of Nocturnal, Azura and Meridia and to actually get blessings from them will be awesome (like increase sneak and damage against undead -which will do a nice combo with Fighters Guild skills).

Also the vampires that worship Molag Bal can get extra resistance against the Fighters Guild skills.

But still, if this will ever be added I hope that the blessing will not be too OP and create more unbalance to the game.

Yeah, I think it would be a great addition to the game if all our characters could have a little faith, be it in divines or daedra. And then act around it. But I guess that is pretty obviousl from my posts in this older yet still very much valid and interesting topic...

Now, of course the actual effects can be argued about a lot, to keep them balanced. But that is details. The general concept though... is something that would truly enrich the game IMO.

Sounds like a way for zos to *** up the game and ruin any resemblence of balance that we currently have. Rng based systems that would have such a large impact on performance are bad ideas.

    This concept is amazing....

But I think something simple that is akin to a Mundus Stone buff would probably work within what Zos has set up. Have everyone everywhere get the same buff for praying at any shrine. The option to "specialize" toward a certain god to give specific bonuses should come later. I would spend CP on a "constellation " of my god of choice if the bonuses were good enough. But I think a series of "community service" repeatable quests akin to the Winter Festival would work within the already given framework.

For myself, I'd love to dedicate one of my Bosmer boys to Y'frre and the other to Hircine. As it is, we can already show our love of Hircine by becoming a werewolf, but there isn't a "reward" for being "good". Even if it were just a title for doing charitable works or observing the Green Pact.

    I think so too!
And would -love- to have an in-game option to delcare my characters followers of this or that god... Leska would jump at a chance to secretly pray to Mephala, Kelas would honor Azura, Kes has a thing for Stendarr... even for my non-RP alts I'd easily see something...

You can actually get a "blessing or Arkay" IIRC, in one of the shadowfen sidequests, giving you a little damage resistance against daedra I think. Something like that is what I imagine, something small, that gives you a little edge in some situations for a while... just a subtle little divine (or daedric) influence... go to shrine, pray for blessing, enjoy blessing while it lasts... but nothing earthmoving or such. Anyone wanting to draw on more power - that is what we have class skills for, templars are already "aedric" and sorcerors "daedric"... it would be the difference between a common follower, and a dedicated priest.

And then a small line of worship-flavor matching passives to spend skill points in, as mentioned, to show religious learnings, trainings, perhaps even a bit of permanate blessings if you declare for one diety.
And daily repeatable quests - yes, Just like for the winter festival, or similar miniquests, - to progress there... and unlocking a shrine for your home from the friendly priest of course. And the miniquests really should match the dieties flavor... some powers might ask for more then others.

Hircine is really covered by werewolves already. But... wouldn't it be nifty if there were "good" activities that would progress WW by showing your devotion to hircine rather then just mindlessly killing stuff while furry?

Nah, thread necromancy is reviving something long done and buried. Like... threads from 2014 asking about armor dyes, justice system or the imperial city when we got that already... ;)

This discussion about religion here had only be resting for a mere three months after its last post, AND is still very valid... that only counts as waking from a coma and not true necromancy...

And I would say, its better to continue a still valid old discussion then starting yet another thread with the exact same topic! Wish more people would use the search function, really... :)

We would ask that instead of reviving a thread that was already once revived that you would instead recreate a new thread on the topic.
