Brand New Armor Trashed in One Day of Gameplay

I created my first crafted light armor sets (V3 Torugs, and Seducer), and after one day of playing in Cadwell's silver first 2 zones, it's almost totally trashed. In particular unstunnable ghosts and wisps in Crow's Wood, and enemies with ranged attacks.

Is this a L2P issue or normal when getting ganked by mobs of uncontrollable monsters?

    Trashed as in durability?

    Repair that thing.

That's actually not bad in comparison to V16 legendary armor need complete repair after less than an hour of play in the sewers.
Far too many characters to list any more.

You might be surprised to know that armor wear is mostly based on how much damage you deal to the enemies and has little to nothing to do with how much you get hit.

That being said, I can wear down a set of armor in about 30 minutes of mob grinding. I just keep on going after that and repair it when I have time.

    Its pretty normal.

Even if you're Vet 16 you still get "xp" but instead of going to another level (champ points are a dif matter) it degrades your armor based on the xp gained. (Or so I hear and after playing with this in mind....does make sense sadly)

Ontop of that it goes down based on the amount of times you're hit as well.

I have times when I'm killing enemies while at full armor and not getting hit and it still tells me my armor degraded.

Craglorn was the worst, insta-0's for all my armor pieces after completing a sole delve and I didn't even die lol.

I had no idea it was linked to XP. I did gain almost 1 vet level that day, too as well as dying 2 times.

Well that's a screwy mechanic. Why should xp gain affect armor?

I think its meant to be a "XP is time and as more time passes your armor degrades" kinda thing.

Once again, I don't know for sure but from what I've seen it makes me think xp does effect it.

Since all I got from a fight was xp, I took no damage nor died yet armor still degraded.

Technically it doesn't always. I still earn xp in PvP but never have to repair my armour

It seems even if I mitigate damage with a shield or a block, my armor gets damaged.

Do some shield spells do a better job of protecting your armor?

Also, when your armor degrades to broken, do you loose all of its benefits, or do the set boni and enchants still work, or something other subset?

Armor repair is probably the best gold sink in the game, since no one can avoid it. In fact, it is one of the few expenses I incur. I just repair every time I visit a merchant (automated by add-on). Just find a way to make some gold to cover the cost.

You just need to accept this is part of the game, though there are a few things that can offset the cost. There is a champion point passive in one of the trees that reduces repair cost (IIRC 75 points to activate). If you are doing equipment writs, among regular rewards are repair kits. These are useful when repairs are really needed, but there is no handy merchant.

I do the writs every day and get between 0 and,if I am lucky, 3 repair kits. That only fixes on average maybe 2 pieces a day, when I have 7!

So it is reasonable to lose all your armor in a full day's play?

Usually costs me upward of 1000 gold for repairs after I take a break from sewers. But after selling everything, I made at least 5000 gold. This game pays well.

Just playing through Cadwell's Silver, even the quest gold rewards are puny. Oh boy 20 gold! If nodes, and enemies and gear drops/rewards are scaled, you'd think they'd scale the quest gold too. :/

Midway thru silver is when I just stopped caring about my armor passives and played in broken 0 gear for as long as it was bearable.

I thought it was kinda funny the other night when I made a new armor set, talked to a npc in town to hand them some random trinket I had discovered in a delve and my armor took damage from it.

My understanding is that ZoS nerfed armor repair costs in PvP after a .... much feedback (yes, I can self-censor at times. Don't expect it).

Anyway, in PvE - and pretty much ANY combat with NPCs or monsters counts as PVE - your armor takes damage. The more directly you are involved in the fight, the more damage. When I play a mage type who hangs back, it's quite cheap in terms of armor repair.

So far my personal high point has been my recent (one time only so far) attempt to face the Imperial Prison. Battlemage/sorc Orc/DPS in medium (for the critical bonuses). We didn't make the final battle after three attempts (I really HOPE that was the final battle, and I shudder to think how bad the vet version is going to be) coming out my "armor repair" bill was something like 1,198 gold.

Personally I miss the Morrowind skill of armor repair, and I think it's weird that a grocer can fix my plate mail, but oh well.

Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

    @Thrasher91604

To be honest i hardly use repair kits hardly ever. and i find questing more than pays for the gold to repair as long as i balance killing some enemies and handing in quests.

i find pure mob grinding and questing without killing is actually not very good and you can spend more repairing than you make unless you have bag space to pick up and sell every drop when grinding mobs, and that just slows the grind down

the set bonuses will no work if your armor is broken.

I guess I will remake the armor. But if I start running low on mats (in particular trait stones), I'll have to rethink it.

As a mage I make every attempt to avoid getting hit, using "sometimes" stunning mines and streak, but ranged attackers are harder to avoid.

I'll ask this again. Do any of the shield skills protect your armor?

Silver Cadwell's quest reward gold has been absolutely horrible. You can't repair 7 badly damaged VR 3 armor pieces for 50 gold. :/

And thanks for answering my question about set boni with broken armor. :) Broken armor = no boni. :(

Armor damage comes from killing NPC enemies (i.e, not other players). Does not matter if you one-shot enemy from stealth and never get hit or if it is a knockdown, dragged out fight that lasts 10 minutes. Does not matter if you are melee or ranged, magicka or stamina, healer or tank This is to normalize armor repair cost across different classes, builds, roles, and playstyles. It would not be fair if tank took 2000g damage every dungeon run and healer took 10g.

Repair costs are artificially deflated during dungeon runs possibly due to the artificially deflated xp and the connection between xp gain and armor damage noted by the posters above. I often come out of a dungeon with less than 100g repair bill regardless of my class or role. I spend the same amount of time grinding mobs and my repair bill can be over 1000g easily. I'm not saying I'm for or against either system but I dislike that they vary so wildly from one method of play compared to another. I prefer a bit of consistency in a game that has so little transparency.

You should go get a try on the trials. Those are freaking armor wreckers because of the XP (at least in 1.6). I can't even count the gold I spend on repairing through having my gear wrecked after every run (at least 1 piece on zero).

But yea, the armor degrades faster the higher the XP you earn (not from killing players). If you go grind in the goblin cave you'll trash your armor in around 40 minutes. Nothing you can do about it except for paying the bill. And once you hit V16, you will have to pay for it. Because recrafting is way more expensive.

Well clearly he is not there yet and is referring to the practice some maintain of re-crafting gear sets while leveling once a set is broken, which a lot of people tend to do since they level really fast and outpace the gear they have to begin with, so they think it is a way for them to save some change. Personally, I like crafting nice gear sets for my alts and simply repairing them periodically as they need it since I find the gold cost totally negligible anyway, but some people like to hang on to their gold. Not something I relate to, lol...
