    Hi guys,

Here, quoting a recent post from Jessica Folsom:
We are working on implementing a character recustomization tool (you'll often see people on the forums refer to it as a "barber shop.") It's a fairly complicated undertaking and we want to do it right, so it's taking some time, but we are indeed working on it.

Is this just hair? A "barbershop" is only for hair. We want to redo everything in the character creator.
Could you give us more than "we are working on it, or soon". That's what we've heard for almost a year now.

C'mon guys, haven't you heard tales of the legendary barbers of Orsinium? Those Orcs are known for their hair arts, aren't they..?

Having it drop with Orsinium I can do. I just hope they aren't planning on releasing it with Thieves Den DLC next year. I can't wait another 6 months. If thats the case, just give us a character appearance redo scoll in the Crown store for now and the big barbershop update can come out later when it's ready.

There's a lot of people who are sick of logging on and playing their character because of the way they look. No one should feel that way in an MMO. Especially when you invest so much into them.

I can agree with most of these ideas but most of all we NEED a race change two.
sometimes I'll take subjects to far and ask for an arm, leg and maybe an eye, please be patent with me.

This was one the main stumbling blocks back when I started playing.

    Put together:
    • appearance not looking exactly the same in the creator as in the world (particularly colours)
    • the 3 character deletions per day restriction
    • +1 inventory per day thing per character
    • crafting grind
    • no appearance change option after creation

I ended up with a level 30 character whose name and prof I liked but whose look, after creating 3 new characters each day to try things out, I ended up being extremely disappointed with. So he ended up a storage mule and crafting alt. Starting over again was a bit boring and I unsubbed.

If there'd been an option to change his appearance I wouldn't have stopped playing him and might have subbed a lot longer.

I've since spent enough time making and deleting characters to be happy with the appearance of the others but it would be nice to be able to fix him when they finally implement this.

What they really should have in the ways of changing appearance is something like they had in the 4th Elder scrolls, like a person similar to the face sculpter in the thieves guild in riften.

Basically, what we need is a face sculptor in ESOTU Who can Completely change your appearance for a very heavy price, give or take, maybe about 15,000 to 20,000+ Gold, or even make it a crown store Thing where you would have to pay a good amount of crowns to completely change your appearance.

The biggest catch with it though. It would be that (with the exception of werewolves) You would have to cure your Vampirism* to get your appearance change or at least find a way to temporarily mitigate vampirism altogether through the use of a soul gem until the appearance change is made but it would cost extra to do so.

(*Undead cannot have their appearance altered)
If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

If a game does not respect your time, best thing to do is move on from it and find something else.

If they are wise, it won't be called Barbershop, but be off of actual lore face changers. ElDer scrolls has the Faculty of Chirurgeons of Cloudrest and the Hollow Faced men of Nohotogrha whom are face sculptors. It would be perfect to implement them into this character appearance change.

I hope they are taking so long because they are adding more options to the character creator before making a barber shop available to us. I would really love if ZOS wouldn't keep us in the dark about it. We know it is a planned feature, but I would love them to at least tell us if they are adding more options to it or if they will just let us re-enter the same old and limited character creator with an existing character. If it is the latter, the barbershop will have little to no use for me unfortunately. If it is the former, then I would use it to change four out of my seven characters right now. Maybe five, depending on the price. The most urgent would be my Altmer, who is my main and who should have black hair, since I never use the hide helmet option with her and never wear costumes without head pieces because I hate her hair color.
Edited by Abeille on December 21, 2015 9:59PM
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Oh please no, my vampire needs an urgent makeover! Vampirism made him look horrible and so different to how he was before; he went from having really dark skin to going bright purple and now looks 1029384 years old, with so many facial features that were hidden when he was darker and now stand out horribly. I don't want to cure my vampirism/hide it, fix him up, and then re-contract/re-enable the disease only to find out he still looks awful. I need to fix him up as a vampire so I know exactly how he'll look, I don't want to waste money on guesses.

ZOS, this feature should have been in at launch.

I understand why we only have 3 character deletes, but between that and not having a barber shop/appearance modifier/etc. it makes for a real pain in the tail getting your character to look the way you want it to.

We need an "Oblivion" style option, where - just before you exit the starting area - you're given the option to modify yout toon's appearance one final time. It allows you to see what your character looks and sounds like in action before being stuck with it.

Please, please, PLEASE make this happen. I have 4 toons on my account that I created today TRYING to get my idea to look the way I envisioned. Guess I'll have to wait for those deletes to recharge.

    ~SIGH~

Sigh, yes. This is me exactly. I have wait 6 days to clear out all the extra "test" characters trying to get the look I want. And I don't feel much like playing when my character doesn't look right. So I wait yet another day to play.

As someone who loves to tweak my character, I would be using the re-customization all the time.

But devs, please do consider an in-game, gold-only barbershop for hair style/beard/face paint/tattoo changes.

    Edit: typo.

Yes, this feature is seriously needed! I've also noticed that our characters look slightly differently in-game, possibly because of the various angles and distance we see them. But it also means, post-tweaking is a must. We play with her/him/them for hours and days after all!

Please Zeni, don't let us wait 'till Dark Brotherhood, please release this feature earlier.

I'd like to add my thoughts - as a dev myself, I don't buy that it's complicated as you already have 90% of the functionality there via the character creation screen. Even if you just put that available via the character selection screen (for example: press x when highlighting your char), people would be happy.

There really isn't a valid reason why this has taken so long.

It takes so long because it is not as easy as people think it is. They are not making a barbershop that just pops up the character generation and allows you to remake your character. If certain features cost crowns, they have to make an interface and process that charges you crowns in exchange for whatever it is you are changing. If it costs gold, the same. If there are things you are not allowed to change, whatever they do needs to prevent those changes.

So, we are talking months of developer time to do this. This developer time that has to compete with other projects.

It seems like something fairly common for a MMO to release without a way of altering your existing character's appearance. I don't know why is that. Maybe it just isn't ever a priority.

I really hope they are taking so long because they are adding many more options with it, and not just a "return to character creator" button.

I have been waiting for this for over a year, in which I have completely ditched a character because I can't stand how they look. She is an almost maxed smithy, something which took me hours on end to get to during the very early stages of the game, during which it was insanely difficult. I've been increasing her smithing and other crafting abilities slowly overtime after that, and she's my only crafter toon. Sadly, she's so ugly that every time I look at her face for too long I just log out. She's a vet but I never get to level up anything but her crafting because I just hate how she looks so much. This has been going on since release since she's my first character. They need to provide the option to change characters' appearances. I've been waiting for this feature for so long, and honestly I'm just getting tired.

For all us sad gamers with ugly-a*s toons:

PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY lest us make our characters beautiful!!!

    My wish list is:

    1) The ability to edit appearance and only pay gold; this should have been available from day one, but why digress?

    2) Allow name change. As this affects the system, I would be willing to pay crowns for this.

    3) Allow race change. Now this would be complicated so I would expect to pay crowns for this and would expect there to be a significant cool-down (e.g., a year) between changes.

    4) Allow alliance change. I understand how this might enrage the die-hard PvP user base, but as time goes on players who were constant companions are no longer constant. Why am I forced to move on because my friends have? Moreover, now that the grouping tool is cross-alliance I am making new friends in other alliances. Why not allow me to join them in the full user experience of PvE and PvP? All that said, there definitely should be a long-term cool down period to prohibit folks who may try to exploit the current system. And, finally, I would accept this as a Crown Store feature in order to moderate the opportunity to change.
