Why do I have to wait 10 seconds to logout?

I had to to be bathroom and couldn't wait the 10 seconds and I died because I had to go. But why do we have to wait 10 seconds?

That's only outside major towns. It's to keep you from logging out as a way to avoid a dangerous situation and keep from dying.

I believe it has to do with an old online gaming action called 'QQ'. In modern speak, this is used to describe complaining in an online environment. However, its origins come from battle.net where typing alt+qq to immediately quit a game during a match.

Timers are to prevent players from force quitting the server in hostile areas or during combat.





Or I could be completely wrong.

Hopefully no issues with just turning off the system on console, cant see 90% of the people waiting instead of just powering down.

It's a buffer to make sure you're fully logged out when in hostile territory. In your situation, you would have found yourself dead on next log-in instead.

That's not how the servers work. They don't create save game files - they continually update your character records while you're online.

It looks like you were trying to avoid something from killing you and thought logout will save you. Not how it works here.

Hate to be the first to tell you, but if you force quit in any fashion your character stays logged in. So if you are doing this to avoid danger then it won't work. If you are doing this because of in game issues then you are better off just waiting. If you are simply just quitting the game then you are fine as your character will log out 10 second later.

The only possitiv aspect if alt F4 or shuting down the consol is, that you dont get ported out of Cyro when the Camp is full.
In both ways, logging of or Alt F4 the char will be attackable for 10 secs

thankfully this doesn't happen, as you'd be very acquainted with if you played on the mac client early on, it crashed every couple of hours

If I could log out with less than a 5 second delay than I would abuse the hell out of that to avoid repair bills. Not to mention the hilarity of pulling a world boss as a tank and then logging out in combat to kill other players.

If ya don't like waiting to log out, Alt-F4 is your friend. Who knows how bad it'll screw up your client, but there you go.

Shouldn't do a thing to your client - IF it's well written then there will no file write's or open files to be corrupted. Leaving any data client side is just an opening to abuse. All data should be stored within the games database.

It was so players couldn't disconnect to avoid being killed by mob or player .. as way back then many seemed to use that tactic

I do this 10x a night when my health / shield bar is bugged after playing half an hour. Works great in Cyrodiil because you stay in the campaign.

The logout wait time (grace period) is a measure to prevent work load on databases and disk I/O. On character selection and subsequent entering of the game world, character data gets copied form the character database/tables to the run-time database/tables, which creates an in-memory working set of data that is constantly updated during play time. This data set may be periodically (e.g. every 10 to 20 minutes) written back to the character DB, to provide a rollback point should data loss or corruption occur on the run-time DB. On logout, this data needs to be written back to the character DB, where it is permanently committed to disk. Disk operations are more "costly" in terms of time needed to perform them.

Without a grace period, it'd be possible to log in and log out repeatedly in very rapid succession, creating a work load on the character database. Because of the "MM" part in MMORPG, which implies a possible concurrency in the hundreds, if not thousands, many people doing this all at once would create an unnecessary and avoidable work load, which can easily be addressed by said grace period. It's a good thing, too, because rollbacks are somewhat hated among MMO denizens, or so I've heard.

Things that will happen if you power off/Alt+F4 instead of logging off:

• Character stays logged in for between 10 seconds and 15 minutes, during which time they can be killed if in a hostile location
• Logging back in within 15 minutes may result in an error that your "Character is already in world"
• Saved Variables are not updated, meaning any settings you have changed will not be stored

That's an accurate description of how the data works, but that's not why the logout wait time exists. If it was, then the logout wait time would exist everywhere, instead of just outside of towns. Heck, towns are the places where people are most likely to log out of the game (because people generally don't want to log in and instantly be in combat, and it's also just convenient for repairs, selling loot, using the bank etc), and yet they're the places where there is no logout wait time. They're also the places where (pre-justice system anyway, I don't know how much it happens now) people would constantly relog to farm for motifs and such.

You can control the work load on the character DB by putting the "grace period" on the other side of the equation: you can log out instantly, but if you immediately log back in with the same character before the "grace period" has expired it can take an extra 10 seconds to load that character.

Keeps you from selectively engaging in combat via login/logout.

Same reason you can't log out when in combat.

Besides, they give you the option to log immediately, and 10 seconds really isn't that long.

I also wait the 10 seconds, its not gunna kill u to wait. I'm not corruption my saved data of all the saved data from all my games just cuz I can't wait 10 seconds.

I always log out by pressing alt+f4. Goes fast and no worries
