Are TESO players ignorant of MMOs?

Stories-Bones-Tell
Bounced around a few MMOs on PC, havent touched on in a long while but decided to try TESO when it came to PS4. I'm level 30 or so now and I have to say 99% of people have no idea what is going on and I'm wondering if this is because MMOs are a new genre for consoles or if the TESO community is just composed of people who are more interested in an TES title than an MMO.

Seen healers who thought their job was to do damage, tanks in medium armor who laughed at the idea of using a shield, guys who think have no concept of loot generation and so on.

I think so, I saw all the posts from people on the first few days of release complaining about the servers, and how it wasn't like the other games etc. I've been playing since Ultima Online, which was around 16 years ago for me. I always laugh when people talk about WoW as the original MMORPG and compare everything to it, well UO was a super fun game, that came out before WoW ever did. I think people lack knowledge in what an MMO is. I tried to talk my friend in to buying it, and his reply was "I don't have enough time to sink in to a game like THAT"... I didn't even know wtf he meant by that, because its just like any other game. So he wastes his time being a zombie and playing Destiny.

Both. There have not been very many MMOs on console.

My next statement may be inaccurate, but the idea behind still holds true regardless.
I would dare say that most TES fans have come from console, however the most passionate TES fans have come from PC.
Consoles are not renowned for their MMO's and, quite frankly, neither is Bethesda or Zenimax.
So playing ESO on any platform will bring the fans (new or old) who, understandably so, just don't get what ZoS is going for here and, arguably, ZoS may not know for certain as well. I feel ZoS is just now starting to realize who their actual demographic is.

TLDR; gamers who play consoles or fans of TES who are not MMO players get whiplash when entering the game world of ESO.

While you may be right in your assessment, you may have to open your mind a bit as well, otherwise you may have a bit of a shock when you get to end-game.

Medium armor is feasible for tanking as it gives awesome stam regen bonuses. The best healers in the game know when to DPS, and in vDSA the healer may have to tank a bit depending on the strategy used.

ESO is also not your typical MMO.

While it is an MMO, and has many of the features, it's also incredibly flexible, and players don't need to be restricted to "strict roles" in battle situations. In fact, it's inadvisable in most cases.

What I have been seeing is most people running around from mission to mission and not really exploring. This is an MMO but it is also Elder Scrolls and that deals with alot of exploring and finding chests in the middle of no where with great equipment in it.

The trinity of roles definitely exists in ESO, but it's not rigidly defined either. In ESO if your healer isn't contributing to damage in addition to healing, then you're going to have trouble. The same goes for the tank - he needs to be able to do some damage in addition to taunting and doing crowd control.

A tank in medium armour is totally viable if done right - trickier to do than a heavy armour tank, but the stamina passives can make it worthwhile as long as you have skills and passives to make up for the lower resistance ratings (like maybe using the Hist Bark set and always keeping Evasion active so that you're dodging a high percentage of attacks). A tank does need sword and board though. Without it, you don't have access to some of the most vital tank skills - especially one of only 2 taunts in the game.

Why does esotu have to play like every other mmo? Sky rim is fun because of choice and immersion. That's the niche here. Zos wins when they go to that place. Wow already lives in the bored memo formula place.

Yeah you can run a nightblade healer. Why?
    I say why not.

A healer that does damage? A tank who doesn't use a shield?......I don't see anything wrong here.

ESO's big attention puller in their initial development and advertising was the freedom in character builds. There is no class or race restrictions on weapons or armor. Any class can access any weapon or armor skill line (apart from class-specific ones of course). Builds do not have to conform to the typical holy trinity roles if they don't have to. It is certainly unorthodox for most MMOs, but ESO is known for being a bit unusual in comparison to the rest of its counterparts. It's what really sets them apart and I love them for it.

Has to be said ESOTU is my first MMO and currently I am still trying to figure out what I want my character to be. I'll also take my time before joining a guild because I want to be sure I know what I am doing,
That said, having played TES single player games for many years, like others who have, we have the heads up re exploration, lore books and so on in the game. It's part of what we love about the TES universe. :)
I too watch people running around like crazy doing quests, running past chests, missing quests, resources, dungeons, Ayleid ruins and so on.
I am pretty sure some think I am nuts wandering around apparently doing 'nothing.'
Now you would think that some folks who played Skyrim (and expected ESOTU to be like Skyrim) to get the exploration element.
Two things there already. Those who thought the game was going to be like Skyrim, and have never played an MMo and those who thought OESTU was going to be like other MMos.
Some folks can't deal with the freedoms the game offers in building character/class/race, weapons/armour.
I love it! and..I look forward to joining up with others to play...but not just yet ;)
Have a good one all. <3

Most people really haven't started playing yet... that sounds weird, but it is true. Same happened on PC.

My new char is just shy of 30 in EP (shadowfen).

Although still pretty ahead of the curve XP-wise, most of the people I see are still 5:1 or more ganging up on regular mobs and bosses.

While you can make a NB med armor tank (or other strange build, believe me I have a few good weird builds)... the new people don't know they aren't setting there stuff up right to pull it off because they don't have to deal with actual fighting until they hit the deeps end of the pool (group dungeons or a low player count at WB or dolmen.

I've done 3 4 man dungeons in thew last 2 days, and all the new people I have played with almost have random stats, skills, and gear. Things generally went badly. We managed to win through with some talking and some skill swapping and some loot trading.

...but "it worked fine for soloing" was the answer a lot of the time... but they weren't even soloing at 28... never had to kill a mob, let alone a solo boss actually solo. Not a lot of understanding of blocking, rolling and bashing yet either.

Had a guy get 2 hit killed by basic attacks at a dolmen today. level 28.. mobs 26... wearing a level 11 set of matching medium crafted armor, and all of his stat points in STA.. no health. He was grouped with us... a friend's cousin. Not a stupid guy, just din't know what he was doing didn't actually work.

First few dungeons were like this a pretty long time at PC release too. If I had 100 GP for every "i'm a tank" guy in heavy armor doing an AOE spam attack in fungal, trusting his heavy armor to keep him alive, I could by a good guild trader by myself.

Right now, jumping in and wailing away while hitting some skill buttons is all you need when you are the 5th guy attacking a world boss.

Hearing a lot of people complain the solo quest lines (fighter, mage, harborage) quests are "too hard." People need more practice and a little help getting their acts together.

I have found all of this games PvE, including the solo quest lines to be laughable, it makes me sad to think how easy it is, takes the fun out of it. I hope there is some actual challenge to the next PvE content.

I agree 100%. However, if you're doing group content and you can't down it because of someone's terrible idea of what they are supposed to be doing... they need to step out and learn. Its not fun for anyone at that point.

For the console version I would say the problems lie with ZoS. No real advertisement for the Group Finder or description of what may be expected of player as a tank/healer/dps.

I suppose it doesn't help when unscrupulous types queue as a tank or healer to skip the wait, then DPS, confusing the matter further.

I've been playing mmo's for a while and I will say this game has brought more new player's to the market than any other mmo i've played since vanilla wow.

Though I wouldn't say ignorant more like waiting for a kindly old wizard in a pointy hat to point them towards Red Mountain ;)

I was wondering when these type of threads would hit ESO. Having played DCUO prior to ESO for almost two years, I can tell you that there is a VAST difference between players on PC and consoles. First, PC players tend to take time to research online, they watch videos, look for build ideas, learn about game mechanics, etc... outside of the game. Most console players, in my experience, can't be bothered with these things. Many are game-hoppers that want to rush through a new game to reach the end and then move on, so they don't waste any time to actually LEARN about the game either ahead of time or while playing. They expect to just jump in, win, and move on. On the DCUO forums, there was posts after post of negative experiences with groups, almost always from console players and almost always involved PUG'd groups.

So no, it isn't just a ESO player issue, it is mostly a console player mentality issue. Although, another contributing factor for ESO is that many players are not MMO players, they are solo players who are Elder Scrolls series fans who came to ESO for the 'next Skyrim' experience, so many are not expecting to have to learn how to play with others.

It's not an ignorant-of-MMO's thing, it's more of a new player thing.

I am, however, equally surprised at your expectation that things have to be done a certain way. In most parts of this game, there is a vast gray area.

The Trinity? TES Lore that's Morrowind so possibly extended to Ebonheart Pact.

An all Nightblade group can do any dungeon if configured right.
