If they ever release a text chat function, please let players disable and enable as they want. I like the UI as it is

Also, I hope voice chat keeps being default, cause it is vey nice :D

This is exactly what everyone who is asking for text-based chat wants.

Yep, don't think we're against voice chat, we're just asking for a more text centric way to chat along with the actual default chat system. =) Quick chat is just not enough and too restrictive for me...
  • modemman11
Yes, lately the voice chat has been bogged down, usually by 2 groups of people talking at once, and another person with their mic shoved against some screeching object.

I can agree that a text chat would be nice, but there would really need to be a way to filter out all the spam from legit messages. I was playing Neverwinter before coming to ESO, and the text chat in the main city hub was constantly flooded with trade requests and bots, and it took 30 minutes of sending the same messages over and over before people even saw it amongst all the flood of spam and combat messages.

Defiance did seem to do it right IMO, you could set filters for each type of message, like LFG, trade, general, area, etc, and only show the messages you wanted, and even let you set several presets.

Lately I've just been making a party on the Xbox so the voice doesn't come through.

It makes it hard to be social, I don't want to be chatting on random group "when it works!" constantly just to commune my wife is going mental.. How are we supposed to join guilds? how are we supposed to be properly social?!

Removing this from the console version is absolutely ridiculous. Clearly knows not how an mmo runs.. It doesn't feel like an mmo to me anymore.. and i regret buying it on console.

Other games make this feature work fine... If people don't for some weird reason like this or don't have a USB keyboard.. you clearly don't like MMO's and what come with it..

I will probably stop playing now due to this.. its just ..boring.. And I imagine a lot of other people will too.
I like the game and if they enable this I sure as hell will return.

It is for me however a deal-breaker.

You seem anti-social. It has been easy for me to play with random people that I have never met or talked with before and join guilds and sell items. Deciding against something before you even try it deprives you of the joy that you could have playing the game.

Huh? I'm far from anti-social, what because i don't want to sit on my headset chatting to random people? It doesn't even work, nor does it allow for many things an mmo does.. You cant find groups adequately, cant find and join guilds. there's so much it cuts you off from..
If i wanted to play a single game like this id play Skyrim... I'm not saying remove voice, just have text too? Since playing on console i've barely seen anyone chatting let alone been able to find a guild etc..
Also im pretty sure many people like me do not want a headset on all the time, to try and do these things...

If Mrs Heiny is working, I play with no sound.

Kinda difficult to discuss anything with anybody like that.

Can I look for a group or group members for a dungeon while I'm running around hunting skyshards using voice only?

Same reason I stopped playing after a week after release.
It's not a MMORPG in its current state as there is no way to communicate properly.
    Just a grindy singleplayer game.
  • simena9292
I am amazed that they desided to go without text chat.
It will be so easy for them to implement it.
I want to like this mmo very very much but without a text chat option i cant see myself going all out in this mmo.
So i ask you ZOS please implement this. It will make so many people happy and make it feel like an actual mmo. (Not a grind part alone, ocasonally running into a random dude with a baby screaming in the mic or music)
If i am going to spend my time in endgame on trials and pvp i need text chat. So if they dont implent it soon, im going back to ffxiv. Purly bc you can actually text a person there. Its stupid.

No I think younhavent given voice chat an honest try. Its ridiculously easy to meet up with groups or just have a laugh while blacksmithing.

Also I know you haven't been playing for more than ten minutes if you say you can't find a guild.

I can't go for more than five minutes without a spam invite to a guild. Just try asking the crowd at the blacksmith or the bank if they have a guild that fits your interests, be it trading or dungeon running.

Trust me they will be fighting over your recruitment.

Of course if youre on ps4 I would be happy to play with you and get you into a fun group.

    Cheers.

Im always baffled when people say they use voice chat to sell items. Do you really think out of the 100k + people playing at that moment 1 of the 20 standing near you is going to give you the best deal?

I get the impression alot of the people against text are still new and have yet to experience much content

So since your just anti social and don't want to talk to people I don't like MMO since I don't think text chat is needed for the console version of ESO since 95% of console players have Mics and the majority are fine with the communication as is. Also I been playing MMO for years but by your logic which most be infallible and I hate MMO.

Source for your 95% and "majority are fine" comments please.

Sometimes it's simply not viable to rely on voice communication. At the extreme edge, obvious reasons include profound deafness and vocal issues.

More often than not though, it's simply easier to use text. What if I want to chat with my guild, hold a private conversation and look for a group....across the entire world map?

Easy enough to do with voice - I just need to...oh. Wait. It's not really possible.

I got a random mail from somebody selling Hemming (I was near the clothing table)...it would've been much easier for him / her to simply use a Trade text chat channel. That way, the player could go and do something more productive and hawk his wares, rather than being stuck in one area trying to earn some gold.

Spamming the same message isn't really constructive, and takes away from the well reasoned posts (from both sides).

I'd like to see a real ZOS reponse, rather than another moderation one.

If the voice chat hardly is reliable why would text chat help.
PC has add-ons, text chat and no voice chat but the lag in places are unbearable.

Console has voice chat and almost no lag whatsoever in all areas.

    Careful what you ask for.
Let's fix voice chat first....leave text chat for PC

On console, I don't want a PC experience and in order to add text chat the entire UI would have to be re-done as it'll be blocked out every time any menu, or NPC interaction occur

Where your source that everyone want text chat? Also my source is that every Xbox/PS4 comes with a Mic or kinect where you can talk to people with voice chat.

To the deaf and people with Vocal issues majority of games on Consoles use Voice chat only for group content. While its not fair I agree the issue is the same developers choice to ignore the small minority ZOS decided to do the same here and the continue to do the same thing with the text chat community a small minority seems to wkeyboard chat. That's why ZOS hasn't said anything while I agree its wrong the numbers shows that its a minority.

While I agree with you it's easier to to use text on a PC which has a keyboard but a Console does not have a keyboard they have mic for Voice chats that's why ZOS used Voice chat since the majority has Voice chat. Also you can talk to your guild mates using voice chat that what I do and many others. You can have a party chat or invite that player into a group and talk to them their also xbox smart glass where you can send a massage to other players. Also their usually always players around you that you can ask .Its easy you just choice not to use it.

I disagree it would have been way more easier to just talk to you about it.Its not hard you all just choice not to talk to people

That's a pity because the first thing I do after entering a new zone is MUTE everyone. And I'm pretty sure I am not the only one who has acquired this habit.

In other words, you don't want to see what I write, and I don't want to hear what you have to say. That's totally fine - there are many other players.

As for the UI redesign - better leave that to the developers. I doubt adding (bringing back) that option would be such dramatic effort.

Both consoles launched with mics. That would be 100 percent of the console community is mic'd up. We don't need a survey for this stuff.

I still don't get how some people aren't in up to FIVE guilds. That's five possible pools of friends to run dungeons with, and you have a dedicated chat channel.

Why would you want to bother fishing for keyboard cowboy random when you could run an awesome dungeon with your crew, laughing all the way to the bank?

Keeping come to just voice chat helps reduce lag, remember that this game was originally built for PCs. I'm sure concessions were made.
Text chat, when added will probably be spam central.

I never said everybody wants text chat - but there seems to be a pretty reasonable call for it.

And note that just because we own consoles that come with mics does not mean we want to use them. I mean seriously, I don't want to hear the crappy (imo) music that folk have blaring through their open mics.

Keyboards can be used with consoles - I have a cheap bluetooth one linked to my PS4.

I was going ask if you'd played DCUO - but that's only PS and PC (at the moment). Text AND voice chat available - with no issues. Most communication outside of instances is via text. Within instances, it's a mix - depending on what language(s) the group members speak.

Howe 'bout FF:ARR? Again - text chat. Probably voice, I couldn't get into the game so gave up early.

I agree, its like many posters came in wanting to hate the voice chat and never even bothered to try it. Lol.

Many posters say they are max level and can't find anyone to ply with or they can't even find a guild!

How do you make it to endgame without being spam invited to at least one guild?

I'm sure if you spoke aloud the need for a guild to run dungeons with, you would be flooded with responses.

As far as endgame dungeons, many of the console crowd didn't start with maxed out characters, be patient and many of those guilds will be full of people looking to run the same dungeons.

We're getting off topic here, but there's no way I'll join a guild that spams invites and has a message of the day (or whatever it's called) that says "invite everyone!". I'll join a guild where I've either solicited an invite myself, or where I know some of the members.

Back on topic - nobody who wants text chat is saying get rid of voice.

Custom channels and such would address any spam issues, as would whatever ignore function is implemented in ESO. Most people want the function to be toggled....so if you don't like it, just disable it.

Nothing wrong with having multiple means of communication.

And if ZOS seriously aren't going to implement text chat - actually saying so would be more constructive that essentially putting their hands over their ears and screaming "lalalalalalala....I can't hear you".

Maybe if they commented either way, we'd know where we stand - and could move onto other things. Like the lack of a reply function in the in-game mail system.

If you, and the other VC advocates + Text haters, bothered to read and comprehend the reasons behind the need of text chat so many people have stated, we'll suddenly stop running in circles in this thread.

I am not against VC. Voice chat is indispensable for raiding and other sorts of group content where coordination is crucial. But key MMORPG features simply cannot function without text communication. At least not in ESO in its current form.

Howe 'bout FF:ARR? Again - text chat. Probably voice, I couldn't get into the game so gave up early.

Dcuo looks like garbage. That game probably has bandwidth to spare.

I know ESO prob looks better on PC, but you have to admit its one of the nicest looking multiplayer games around.
Its possible that the consoles can't handle much more in terms of bandwidth consumption. Remember that the PS or Xbox client is also always running.

I'm not a tech head and this is just a theory.

I mean why else would they leave it out?

If text chat doesnt hurt my game experience I am all for it,

But if text chat means more lag, I have to draw a line on lagging a game that works perfectly well with voice.

Silence is a kind of answer. Its a tactic I use on my child. As a parent I sometimes let my child have his tantrum and refuse to engage. Its for his own good.
That's probably an acceptable tactic for a child throwing a tantrum, but it's not how you should treat paying customers really.

Your kid isn't going to stop using your product and take his money elsewhere, and your livelihood doesn't rely on your son continuing to throw money at you. Well....at least I hope it doesn't.

Please note my silence. Lol. Mwa ha ha!

Don't you have anything better to do then troll the forms?

But really text chat can help change the game and I like to think in a better direction. People are being criticized for not giving voice a chance but so many people will not give text chat a chance. Don't down it tell you have tried it.

I was just trying to joke to show I wasn't trolling, I guess it didnt land. I have stated before that text chat will probably be just fine.
