Question on tanking...

Xaretic
Xaretic
Me and a few friends are going to run together through the game and I am looking at doing the tanking, cannot decide on Templar or DK, which do you guys feels is the better choice for all the group content or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance for any help...

Imperial DK tank for the win, but really, either option will be fine

I like a redguard Templar but to each its own.
I'm not 100% sure about endgame but 5-50 my redguard Templar was a lot more viable than my redguard DK in tanking

Its up to your playstyle. DK is probably a better tank. Templar isnt far behind though. Probably imperial/redguard are your best tanking choices.

They are both very good tanks for end game pve.
You should choose the one that you like the look of. A holy knight or fiery destruction.

As far as pure tanking goes, DK probably has the best toolkit of all the classes.

The thing is in ESO the roles aren't that clearly defined, every class is going to pretty easily meet the tanking requirements of the content, where they really differ is what else they bring to the group and how they go about things.

You can be a great tank playing any class, so play the class you like the overall theme of, this game has a lot of very deep timesinks in it and it's really not very reroll friendly, so make your initial choices with the long term, and even playing different roles, in mind.

You're not going to go wrong by choosing the wrong class to be a tank, you'll go wrong if you choose the wrong class for you. I personally have never liked Paladins and Templars are no different, just can't get into them, OTOH I love my NB and prefer tanking with it to my DK even.

Far as races go, you can magicka tank too, I see racials as much more class specific than role. I'd go Imperial with a NB or stamina Templar but I'd roll Dunmer for DK and probably one of the three magicka races for sorc even planning to tank since it'd be relying heavily on magicka based shields and abilities.

It depends on what playstyles you might want to experiment with later too.

Templars can Tank, Heal, and deal damage at melee-range (stamina based).
Dragonkights can Tank, deal melee range damage, and long-range (magicka based) damage.

in terms of tanking DKs and Templars are pretty equal. But there is one big difference when it comes to utility: the DK is the only class who has chains and the ability to pull mobs. You always want to have at least one DK in your group who pulls everything together. So if you don't have a DK DPS friend who wants to do this you should start with a DK (Dunmer will be the best choice, good for tanking and the best for DK magicka DPS if you want to try that later).
The Templar on the other side has a lot of heal and sustain support for your group (synergies and abilities to restore resources and increase the regeneration), can do good damage while tanking and offers one of the best defensive ultimates (Nova, deals good AOE damage and reduces the dmg of every enemy inside by 30%). If you master the Templar tank you will be able to tank and heal a dungeon at the same time (pieces of light armor) and your other 3 friends can go full DPS (even works in vet DSA but takes some training and experience). For a Templar tank or tank/healer Breton would be the best choice (spell resistance, more magicka, spellcost Reduktion). In you wanz to try anything but tanking you could also play a pure healer, but your Templar won't make a good magicka DPS. If you want to tank and maybe play DPS from time to time as a Templar then you should focus on stamina (redguard would be the best class for that). I personally have more fun playing my Breton Templar tank but it requires a lot more skills and experience if you tank in light armor, but it's pretty awesome when you do 4-man dungeons with 3 DPS, or with just 3 or 2 ppl, if your DPS is good enough.

I hope that helps you with your decision and let us all know which class and race you chose!

DK tbh. Those talons makes every dungeon so much easier. DGB for the self heal when your healer forgets what he is there for and 2 good S/1h skills in taunt and slash to reduce damage . I have been able to tank dungeon up to 5 levels higher than me ( 42 and 47 dungeon ) without too much issues. I will add that I had a item level of 47 at the time due to hist bark set I crafted.

I think the imperial wouldve been a better choice than my Nord. And remember to get a WW bite for the freeby stamina regen.

I have been considering trying to magicka Templar tank. I just need to get a set of heavy armor and do a respec for my skill points and I'd be set.

IF you have 1h and shield then hist bark is a must. Saves you some stamina with the block chance.

I prefer Templar tank because outside of trials you can actually replace the need for a healer too which means running with 3 DPS. You want a DK in the team though for chains and great dps.

Tbh. I see sorcerers tank better than any other classes, but DK's have more skills for tanking than any other class, like e.g. Talons, chains, green dragon blood, spiked armor, reflective scales.... the other classes must lvl up first to access the good shields and other skills useful for tanking.

I have seen all classes being able to tank well though, it is much more about skill than class itself - though like with dps and healing, some classes have major advantages in terms of class skills.

Dragon Blood: templars have heals too.
Reflectve Scales: do people actually use it for PvE tanking? Everyone has Defensive Posture on their bar anyway.

Considering that any class in the hands of a compitent player can effectively tank endgame content, I say go with the class that seems most FUN to you.

That being said, I have a DK Dunmer tank and I absolutely love tanking with him. Talons, Igneous Sheild > Green Dragon Blood, Chains. I feel like as a DK i have all th tools i need. Great CC, great Self heals/sheilds, and good resourse management(sta/health). Also, Magma Armor is a very nice Ult for tanks. Your healer drops...pop Magma armor, and go rez.

    I haven't lveled a Templar yet, so i can't compare.

I have both Templar and DK tanks (though my DKs are still non-vet), and I've run dungeons with Sorc and NB tanks as well. They all work well, it's just a matter of play style. Yes, DK chains are awesome for pulling in mobs, but you now need to be careful because if you pull a mob that just got CC immunity, you get pulled TO the mob (and possibly out of your standard or your DPSs veil).

I hear tanking is a lot different here than in other MMOs. I'm really having fun with my tanks.

Yeah it is pretty different. The taunts we use are "emergency taunts" in other games..

In a lot of other games mostly tanking is a matter of building up a lot of hate and staying on top of the list for each monster. In ESO it is a bit more like snap Crowd Control.

Do you like Igneous Sheild over Hardened armor?
