now that my Redguard is VR1 and will defeat Molag Bal he will soon need to grow a beard and shave his head... following the tradition of his people

    char_120723.jpg

He will need a barber shop mechanic to observe these traditions.

I would like the charges to be done on confirmation (like respec on Champion Points) rather than a gateway to changing anything at all (like Skill Points). Let us fiddle with different settings, compare... then charge us when we know what we want to walk out of the door with.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to change my character? I love my flame haired Mage!

However this will certainly be a fun addition for people. The way I think it'll run is:

All the choices you have at the character creation: In game gold.

New stuff? That'll cost you crowns. This service Is the very definition of "Cosmetic and Convenience" which is what they said the Crown Store would be.

Agreed. Sould be easy to do... re-enter chargen, play with the sliders, have a "restore" button to go back to the "now", and a "make it so!" button to finalize when you are finished, and a running total calculated by adding costs for each slider moved from "now" position, to be paid upon "finalizing"...

And I expect they will make all changes cost crowns. Though I would love it if the "everyday" changes to stuff like hair, makeup, adornments, etc. were paid in gold instead...

I didn't want to change my character until I learned about the whole baldness and beards being a sign of bravery. Now, once I defeat Molag Bal with my Redguard... I kind of want him to be bald and bearded.

Otherwise, I'm good too. I spend a LOT of time making my characters. Those decisions aren't made lightly so I walk away very happy with what I have.

I would be very angry if they use the crown shop for new styles and body options. The look of our chars is extremely important, gating it behind a pay wall is wrong.

The barber should work for gold and be implemented in a quest chain, leave the crown store out of this please.

so sorry but im pretty sure new styles will be crown store, yes our looks is important, but for a b2p this is one of the main ways to get cash in almost every MMO that is f2p\b2p and so on. i will not complain if i can get it for gold but i really dont think this will happen.

and yay for barbershop being worked on, totally agree on first suggestion ^^

I would like to see a barbershop and then something like Galathil the Face Sculptor, some seedy back-alley plastic surgeons found in the outlaw areas. The barbershop would be for cosmetic changes whereas the face sculptor would be for more drastic body and face modifications. That could then serve as the way to separate crowns from gold alterations if that's a necessity. I personally think it should be just paid for with gold. I don't want too much crown store payment.

I like your ideas but I would like to see a one time free change after seeing your character in game. I seem to get just what I want while building my character but once in game they're not the same. I would love a one time fix the features I need to free and then if I want to add any new stuff the cost factor would come in. also I really want facial piercings without having to get some head band or whatever with it. :)

Hmm, weird that I hadn't gone through this thread earlier... Well, let put on my History Major hat for a few minutes and clear some things up about barbers (although it may be worth noting that the only reason I ever did any research into historical barbers in the first place is because an old D&D sourcebook got me curious).
    Gidorick wrote: »
lol. I had no idea surgeons were called barbers... wait, is the red in the red and white pole BLOOD?!?!?
Actually yes. It goes back to the early middle ages (I want to say 11th or 12th century, but don't quote me on that) when surgery was separated from one of the duties of the clergy, and started to be done by barbers (who previously did just do hair and related things). The pole is supposed to represent the bloodletting that was one of the most common services barbers performed. There was a bowl at the top representing the bowl of leeches, a bowl at the bottom representing the bowl the blood would go into, the pole itself represented the pole that patients would hold onto to deal with the pain, and the red and white stripes represented bloody bandages. I know a lot of barber poles have blue stripes now as well, but I have no idea where the blue comes from - it must have been a later addition.

Please don't call it a barber shop - barbers cut men's hair! Hairdresser is a more unisex name, albeit not quite as refined sounding as a barer. There's got to be a better than than either of those two.
Only in the modern world. In the middle ages barber was the term that was used for anyone who cut hair - regardless of whether they cut men's hair or women's hair (despite the fact that the name comes from the latin for 'beard'). It is unlikely that medieval barbers would have specialized in cutting the hair of only one sex.
    Gidorick wrote: »
I agree @zzz. I don't care for the term 'Barber' either. That's why I included the idea of the Tonser. Something a little more 'medieval' than barber would be preferable.
Tonsor is more Roman, while barber is more medieval. Both come from latin origins, though, and there would have been a great deal of overlap in the time periods in which the terms were used, but barber is definitely the most medieval term.

So @Gidorick and @zzz I hope this helps put barbers more in their proper historical perspective for you.

Oh yeah, and I strongly support a barbershop, I like the concepts in OP, and I like the idea of having the option to buy these changes with either gold (there are few gold sinks in the game, so adding another totally optional one is good) or crowns (if people want to spend real money on this instead of gold, why not let them).

Actually, no. From a historical perspective, considering that Tamriel is largely based on medieval Europe, barber is absolutely the most appropriate name.

Okay the following are hairstyles made by a modders for The Sims 4 and The Sims 3. Nope, it doesn't move. But then, neither do most of the hairstyles available to us now and the few that do, do it really poorly. So I would frankly rather have hair that does not move at all rather than the incredibly poor range of hairstyles that we have now. And I feel that if a game with far lower end graphics than ESO has can support this kind of hair, ESO should certainly be able to.

I don't really care for how the front looks on this one but I love the back.
    simshair14_zps61fmgdli.jpg

    a22_zpsu8ewhoue.jpg

And if for some reason it absolutely CAN'T come over the shoulders in front as most of these do, well then just sweep it back away from the face and maybe give us some options like this:

    simshair9_zpsbegnzh55.jpg

    simshair11_zpsyveu9jhx.jpg

    simshair15_zpsca6qouwf.jpg

    simshair13_zpsjaddxqzw.jpg

    simshair16_zpsqozbkiq9.jpg

And no, I don't want to see ESO become The Sims. So don't even go there. I'm simply using these examples to highlight what can already be done in an even much lower end game. I'm sure some of the rest of you can pull some great examples from the TES modding community to share and I encourage you to do so.

Barbers should be more common and less expensive, but ingame, lore-friendly ways to alter your entire appearance are available to the citizens of Tamriel.
Okay, the rich citizens of Tamriel.

The Face Sculptor in TES5 allowed you to revisit the character creation screen for 1,000 Septims. Drakes have a lower value than the Septim, so a 10,000 or higher cost for ESO's face sculptors sounds appropriate. At the very least, face sculptors should allow you to fully re-customize your face. Bones and all. To go closer to our in-lore example, the face sculptor should allow you to re-customize your entire body. This leaves out Race, Class and Name selection, which would be reasonably left for the Crown Store. Or not. The in-lore example goes further than body customization by letting you completely remake your character. Face Sculptor is really a misnomer at this point, but that is what they are called.
