After the latest patch I've been cosistently freezing in game after 1-5 minutes. I don't have Add-ons enabled and my PC has had no configuration changes or issues. I've had freezes before, but usually maybe 1 or none on a given night of play. I think something is bad with the new update.

Well, no love with 6.0.3 here. I was able to play PVP earlier tonight in a large battle for probably 40 minutes with one-on-one, one-on many (ahem; it was more like many-on-one where I mostly died) and no crashes! I thought it was FIXED. Later tonight it was crash after crash. I've sent so many crash reports I could have written a novel and at least gained more experience with that novel than I have in the game. In my last crash report I wrote that I might have to break out my NDS to get in some good gameplay.

BTW I am running Win7 32-bit and have no intention of switching. I turned off all Add-on's a while back and that seemed to make no difference.

They really should put a "Crash Counter" on the pop-up Error Reporting Window: "Over xxxx crashes servied" After all, this may be the only way I can make it on the leaderboard in ESO.

Well in my opinion we cannot fix it, although i see many people here trying to fix it. The thing is, adjusting your graphical settings is a workaround, not a fix. This is also acknowledged by Zenimax, they are currently investigating and searching for a fix.
When you set lower graphical settings you put less pressure on the client and so on the server. The fact that this happens a lot in evenings and weekends states that this is a server problem. Something that happened a lot when EU + US servers were not split in different regions back when the beta ran and the game was released. When a game gets this much attention all of a sudden, the servers gotta grow with the demand or at least be adjusted. The question is if this already happened. No hard feelings for Zenimax, it just takes them quite a while to fix server problems (referring to server problems from beta and release of the game).

This reminds me by the way, they DO use a datacenter in the EU for EU players, right? I thought i read last year a post of a Zenimax employee that stated that it had been done. Can someone confirm this?

After the last patch my game seems to be experiencing frequent crashes as well, at least one an hour or so. It was at its worst last night while trying to do the "Castle of The Worm" quest given by the prophet, once I reached a certain part of the quest, my game crashed 4 times in a row.

I checked the temps on my graphics card and they are normal, not overheating. I have noticed that periodically alt-tabbing out and checking in windows task manager the main ESO process seems to use quite a bit of memory, anywhere between 1.7 - 2.5 Gigs of ram, is that normal? Seems kind of high...

Here are my PC specs if it helps:

    Intel I5-3470
MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 2GB
    8 GB Ram
    Windows 8.1 - 64 Bit

    Just a small thought.

Why don't you want to switch to Win7 64?

If you got a regular Win7 box from MS, it has both 32 and 64 on the disk. Same for the upgrade MS boxes.

Also, most PC mainstream builders have 32 and 64 on their "repair" disk or in the "repair file/partition".

I have a similar issue. I recently returned with "Tamriel Unlimited" and I don't see that much has changed in the way of stability. I left because the game was unstable and server rollbacks were common, now, well no rollbacks but game is as unstable as ever.

About every 30-60 minutes the game will just crash and throw up the "unexpectedly quit" screen. I have done everything imaginable, port forwarding, every imaginable update (drivers and everything else), no firewall, no antivirus, no spyware protection, nothing running in background at all, no add ons, fresh install, repair tool, you name it, I have done it.

Still. Game refuses to be stable for more than 30-60 minutes.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Heat ?....the extra thermal load playing the game + accumulataion of dust bunnies over time.
Perhaps setting virtual memory to zero and then restoring might be worth it as a cry as desperation.
    Try a diskcheck too ?
Check the PSU voltage stability.....quite a few cheap components on some PSUs might undervolt the GPU...especially as it heats up and deteriorates.

Not saying they will help...just in the interests of being thorough.

Since the latest patch, game has started crashing on my comp too, was fine before. Running win 8.1 64bit. The launcher is rather glitchy too, have had to re-install it almost every day now.

    thumbs down.

no video card, but still I could play fine on middle textures and subsampling settings (with no effects and everything else put down to lowest settings) before 1.6. Screen resolution is 1280*1024.
Now the game doesn't let me load to any city (crashes on loading screen) on same settings with Direct X 11. On Direct X 9 and lowest settings with screen resolution of 800*600 I have experienced about thirty crashes for three hours today. Five of them - in 15 minutes in Marbruk bank. There was never a crash in any bank, even on up-to-15-level zones where there are lots of people.

How many of you are crashing in PVE and have you tried the fix that worked for me in PVE?

I'm asking because I was getting constant crashes before I tried the above fix and haven't crashed since. It would be nice to know if I am the only one who has benefited from this fix or if others are finding some success too.

The in game video settings are set to Ultimate but I am unsure what exactly this fix did, if anything, to the graphics. (if anyone can enlighten me, that would be great)
I have vertical sync enabled and in solo dungeons getting a steady 60fps and outdoors 35-60 fps.
Playing on the EU servers and only have a level 12 character but that character was constantly crashing in Davon's Watch. I now have explored half of Stonefalls and done every quest I have come across without incident.
One last thing, my version of the game is not running through the steam client.

    yada yada

I have a very nice gaming rig and everything is installed correctly, mounted correctly, and updated. So before the typical tech support rhetoric, everything is good on my end.

ESO has a notorious reputation of problems.
Since coming back to ESO a week ago, I have crashed constantly each day. If I said 1 per hour I don't think that would be an exaggeration, though I have not kept count. I have however crashed at least three times today and have only been playing off an on for a couple hours. Once I was just riding into town on a mount, the other time killing a zombie. None of these were during Cyrodiil. In fact since coming back most of my crashes have been outside Cyrodiil.

Something needs to be done about this. There are so many bugs that have been an issue for the past 2 years (yes, since beta) that have not been addressed or fixed. It is no wonder you are on a f2p platform and players made mass exodus out of this game the first 2 months of launch. No matter the trinkets you dangle, players still want a stable platform.

I resubbed but I am pretty sure I can only handle so much more of this before I not only cancelled but uninstall for good. This is quite irritating.

    Hi @Xael ,

What processor are you running, and how many cores? Since you have a 64 bit OS and not a 32 bit one, this may help resolve some of your crashing problems. Sometimes higher-end hardware can have a difficult time evenly distributing game data, and limiting which cores are active for ESO:TU can help in many cases.

Open C:\Users\Your Username Here\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live (or liveeu for EU server)

    Locate your UserSettings.txt file

Locate the following strings, which may have a different number at the end, and make sure you change them to the following:

    SET RequestedNumJobThreads "0"
    SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads "0"

Save, and try again to see if it helps!

Thank you everyone for the information being posted! The causes, solutions, and potential solutions are likely going to be different for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, so this helps narrow down troubleshooting steps. We are actively researching these crash reports, and we hope to have further troubleshooting steps soon.

As always, if you are in contact with a Customer Support agent and your troubleshooting steps are not resolving your issue, please be sure to let the agent know so they can provide you with additional troubleshooting specific to your system!

getting this too, was especially bad yesterday 1.4 (april fools prank from zos?). Anyway .. it usually happened every 20 or 30 minutes, all of a sudden everything stops, cannot use skills or loot anything (can move tho, but npc's are stuck), then the latency meter goes 999+, and after maybe 10-20 seconds the game continues. So quite clearly the sync is temporarily lost between server and client.

That's another problem, most of the time the game crashes, there is no pop up to even send a crash report. These crash reports you are getting, they are probably no where near the amount of crashes that are actually happening with this problem. Sometimes the crash will completely freeze the computer. Since when does "higher-end" PCs include higher then 2 cores? Don't you mean "modern PCs" xD

I agree with Xael, the fix you're suggesting has been suggested since release, it's rare to find someone it actually works for. It feels like you guys coded for the lowest common denominator. More cores may not mean a better computer, but new PCs are not getting less cores, they're getting more and that is somthing that should've been considered.

I am also getting crashing. Started with 2.0.2, and continues with 2.0.3. Usually once or twice per play session. Can happen shortly after I start playing, or after a few hours. Doesn't matter where I am (city, dungeon, etc), as far as I can tell. Haven't tried the workarounds because I can live with the occasional crashes for now, and none of the workarounds actually seem to work reliably anyway.

I have contacted customer support over this exact issue numerous times. I have tried list after list of fixes suggested by ZOS customer service and techs and NOTHING has fixed the issue.

In some cases my video display driver stops working altogether!

Maybe the problem doesn't lie with our systems ZOS!!!

I just uninstalled the game and im trying a fresh install to see if this helps. If it doesn't then im done! I don't want this sub-par code to fry my video card or cpu...

So far I have tried all of the following:

1.Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.

2.Right click on the msconfig.exe program and choose Run as administrator.

3.On the General tab at the top, click on Selective startup.

    4.Uncheck Load startup items.

5.Click on the Services tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services box.

6.Click the Disable all button at the bottom

7.Click Apply, and then click OK.

    8.Restart your computer.

When your computer boots up again, it will be in selective startup mode. Try the game again, and see if you have different results. If everything works correctly, then one of the service or startup programs was causing the issue. To troubleshoot which program is the source of the difficulty, re-enable a few programs at a time and try running the game again.

Once you encounter difficulties, use the process of elimination to determine exactly which program is the source of the issue. As soon as you have determined which program seems to cause the crash, please let us know so that we can work with you to resolve the issue.

When you have finished this troubleshooting, be sure to turn selective startup off. This is done by opening the msconfig window again and selecting Normal startup. Click Apply, then click OK, and then restart the computer.

Here are other things ive done but HAVE NOT HELPED!

    Black screen
If you observe a black screen after pressing Play, please refer to the potential fixes detailed below:

    #1. Admin mode
Right click the ESO launcher icon
    Click Run as Administrator

#2. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date
Look at your DxDiag, are your drivers from 2012 or before? Yes? Then they need to be updated.

    To do so:
    • Nvidia Video Cards: http://www.nvidia.com click "Drivers" and choose Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.
    • AMD Video Cards: http://www.amd.com click "Drivers & Support" and click the "Find your driver" button.
    • Other Video Cards: You should contact the computers manufacturer for driver updates.
If after updating your drivers they still appear to be from before 2013, it is possible that the manufacturer stopped producing updates for this model of card

#4. Make sure that the latest version of DirectX is installed on your system
You'll find more information here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ie/windows/which-version-directx#which-version-directx

#5. Adjust your video card to run the game at High Performance.

    Nvidia Video Card.
Open the Nvidia control panel. This can be done usually by clicking the appropriate icon in the bottom right of the computer on the Task Bar. You can also right-click directly on your desktop and you should see Nvidia Control Panel in the list.
Under 3D settings, select the Manage 3D Settings. The Manage 3D Settings window displays on the right.
Click the Program Settings tab at the top in the Window on the right.
Your first step is to select a program to customize. Click the drop down and select eso.exe.
Your second step shows a list of settings for the program. We need to look for the Feature Power Management Mode and change the option on the right to Prefer maximum performance.
At the bottom select Apply and close out of the Nvidia Control Panel.
Now try running the game as administrator

    ATI Video Card.
Open the Catalyst Control Center. This can usually be done by clicking the appropriate icon in the bottom right of the computer on the Task Bar. You can also right-click directly on your desktop and you should see Catalyst Control Center in the list.
The Catalyst Control Center will open. In the top right corner is a button that says Preferences. Make sure that Standard View is selected.
Next, select Gaming, then under Gaming Performance, select Standard 3D settings.
Move the slider to Optimal Performance.
Click Apply and close the Catalyst Control Panel.
Now try running the game as administrator.

#6. Adjusting the Screen Resolution in the UserSettings File.
The default location of this file is \Users\*USERNAME*\My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\UserSettings.

If your native screen resolution is 1080x1920 you need to modify this file as follow:

    From
    SET FullscreenHeight "0"

#7. Try to delete the ShaderCache.cooked file
The default location for the file is C:\Users\*USERNAME*\My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live.

After that file is deleted, run the game as administrator, and it will recompile that file.

If the file is missing or empty, it is likely that something is preventing the system from creating that file correctly (which is an issue we are currently investigating).

    Game crashes during cinematic
Locate the The Elder Scrolls Online game file. This file can normally be found in:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client

    or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online EU\game\client
1.Once that file is located, right-click the file and select Properties at the bottom of the list.
2.Once the Properties window is open, select the Compatibility tab.
3.Select the option to “Run this program in compatibility mode” and from the drop-down menu select “Windows XP SP3” (it may say Service Pack 3).
4.Select the option “Always run this program as an Administrator”
5.For ease of use, right-click the eso.exe file and select “Send To…”
6.From the subsequent slide-out menu, select “Desktop (Create Shortcut)”.

This will allow a very easy, quick way of opening a game running in compatibility mode.

Possible resolution to crashes / lockups / not loading after clicking Play on some laptops:

Some laptops include Nvidia Optimus Technology, which is basically a GPU switch that starts with an Intel HD4000 and will then switch to another integrated GPU for higher end performance. We are investigating as to whether The Elder Scrolls Online makes the transition or not, and believe that changing Nvidia’s settings may alleviate the issue.

How to select the preferred graphics processor:

For the first method, you can right click on the desktop icon for The Elder Scrolls Online and hover over the option "Run with graphics processor." A window will pop up to the right of your cursor. Select the option "High-Performance NVIDIA processor." This option may not be available, as it has to be enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel.
1.The second method sets up a High Performance profile for The Elder Scrolls Online. This method also works for setting up High Performance profiles on machines with older Nvidia Cards with a minor change; instead of selecting the processor, you select the performance option of High Performance.
    2.Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
    3.Select "Manage 3D Settings"
    4.Select "Program Settings" tab
5.The first heading is “1. Select a program to Customize:”
6.a. Click the Add button to the right.
7.b. Browse to and select the application executable you wish to create a profile for. (It will be “ESO.exe,” located in the directory in which you installed the game.)
8.The second option is "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:"
9.a. Click the drop down and select High-performance NVIDIA processor.

Both of these methods are based on current information posted on Nvidia's support website, and the instructions may be different based on your installed version of the Nvidia Control Panel. We do not guarantee this will fix the graphical errors that are occurring, but believe that it may help.
