Please add jail time as a punishment option for when you break the law. make it so for every 100 gold of bounty you get 10 mins jail and when you go to jail you get one lockpick with a very hard lock on the jail door.

that would require them to recode lock picking to be hard. have to be logged in for it to count also. some body stuck in jail for an hour or 2 instead of running the pledge could be fun.

I think there should be more than two options as well. It's pretty silly that it's only pay or flee. If the crime was that important that you were going to kill me over it why would you simply forget about it 10 minutes later? I was really expecting more from the whole system honestly. It just seems really half done and not well thought out.

    Hmmm 1,000,000/100 = 10000, 10000 x 10 = 100000, 100000/60 = 1666 hours. Yeah... I'll pass.

No thank you. The system we currently have is bad enough.

Currently, your bounty decreases by 22 gold every 3 minutes. It would take 24 hours for a 10,560 gold bounty to clear. A 100,000 gold bounty would take 9.5 days. A 1 million gold bounty would take almost 95 days to clear.

Then you guys should really think twice before breaking the law. Not everyone is good at stealing, if you keep getting caught then maybe you should change your career.

I doubt it will happen, some people will have unusable characters for days, weeks, or even months, and this will lose ZoS money as people will not want to wait to play these characters.

To those shouting "No!", the OP suggests this as an optional punishment. i.e. When accosted you can:
    Pay your bounty
    Go to jail
    Flee

And if you choose to flee and are killed you will respawn normally. Jail time is a suggested system for added realism and an alternative way to burn your bounty at a significantly accelerated rate in exchange for severely restricted mobility.

And to touch on realism: in medieval Europe towns and cities did not have jails. The local governments and law enforcers did not want to deal with handling a prisoner for an extended period of time, so if caught for a crime and unable to "pay your bounty," you were hung. Immediately. Even for stealing bread. In that regard the current Justice System is realistic. You can compensate for the damage you've done or face death.

Let's go ahead and add more options.

Jail time as punishment is a modern thing. Previously jail time was basically used to hold you while you waited for your trial or punishment. As such we could add some things to the game.

We could add flogging, hanging, tar & feathers, losing a hand, tongue or ear, branding, stocks, beheading, community service/chain gangs, banishment, or slavery.

Or we could just remember that it's a game not reality and simply reduce the amount of time we have to wait for the bounty to go away so people can play a game and have fun.

Widoch - Nord Dragon Knight of Ignorance.

Personally, I find the threshold at which the guards attack you to be criminally low.... So, I pickpocketed 2 people and now you're going to cut me down in the streets!?

    Surely, there's a better way?

Yes, but only if there are quests in the jail and activities to pass the time... including a possibility of a jailbreak.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

Psshhh nonsense. Have you ever played ArcheAge they had a whole justice system where if you committed crime you got jail time. Then the next time you died you were judged in a court and the players were a jury. People loved it. Was a blast criminals coming up with bull explanations and juries giving max sentences. Then you would go to jail and you could either wait our your sentence or break out. Tons of fun.

I would still be playing it if it wasn't so P2W and the crafting system was complete crap. But seeing it was so successful in archeage I can for sure say that a similar system with a spin on it would definitely be a success here in ESO.

If they implement the rest of the justice system players will be able to hunt you down to collect those bounties so don't want you locked in jail.

The idea of jail time with lock picking is a good idea, HOWEVER... the time per bounty proposed by the OP is a terrible idea imo. Maybe make it so that you MUST pick the lock and escape --- however you get x amount of tries before you are killed on the last try.. and still retain your bounty plus some added bounty for failing. I'm sure they can come up with something more specific but just trying to think outside the box here in a way that it can work in an MMO.

That's not the reason why they are after your blood. Although the game doesn't show this, it is because of where you said the guard should shove the bounty and one of the people you penetrated with your weapon was the guards mother and that the mother has already booked a second appointment for further penetration.

I like the general idea of "jail" and other alternate punishment options. And let's be honest, it is a bit of an TES tradition... remember where you start each and every TES game? As prisoner of some sort... be it wasing ashore after your prison transport ship sinks, or being released from custody on imperial orders, or fleeing your cell with the emperor because that's where the secret escape tunnel is hidden, or being saved from your execution by dragon attack...

But as it has beem mentioned, if we were to include jail time, it would have to be interesting for players.

Small offenses could be done with a couple minutes in stocks... either forced (if the guards catch you, you get a new option added to "pay fine" and "fight/flight" - "do time", and then spend a few minutes in the stocks, for other players to laugh at and perhaps even throw stale tomatoes or something), or semi-voluntarily (click stocks to enter, while in stocks your bounty decays at a much increased rate and guards will ignore you since you already serve time)

Larger bounties might get you sent "into exile" to a prison island map (public dungeon style), minus your gear, where you have "prison time" quests (boring repetetive actions like sewing jute sacks, breaking rocks into gravel. etc.) that on completion reduce your bounty, prison encounters (fisticuffs in the yard area, finding the guy who can get you stuff... for a price, ambush in the showers... etc.) and a special secret "jailbreak" questline you can find if you look hard enough...
You'd either work off your bounty by doing the repeatable "prison time" quests and get released back to the mainland a free citizen (with gear access restored again), or you manage to escape and go back that way (but the escape quest should have a good chance of failing, resulting in added bounty and thus prisontime). Might be some special titles in for either way too. or once come the barbership, some special "prison tats" unlocks. And the prison clothes might show up as costume.

    On, the possibilities!
