The need for functional torches

But of course. Your idea is great too. And more likely for ZOS to pick up.

But personally, I like things simple.

Prior to the b2p transition... the /torch being a toggle would have been ideal.

I worry about the likliness of getting first person horse riding because of the focus shift. How do you monetize that?

Thank goodness there's an addon for that.

Hmm... I wonder if an addon could make /torch stay active despite player movement.

I'm all for the functional torch, but all our dreams of deep dungeon spelunking gets ruined... by other people.

Open dungeons/caves have all their immersing qualities stripped, by that horde of naked players running by and roll/jump spamming along the way, rushing to get to the end because they care nothing about the exploration.

This is a fundamental flaw of the game since it's conception, and nothing will make adventuring worth while until they address this.

Make all instances flaggable for solo/private(invite only)/ public. Let us decide how we want to play.

We may not have gotten Skyrim online like we all wanted, but this way at least we can scour dungeons/caves with our friends at the pace we want, without silly interruptions.

No. This is not and never will be and never, ever was intended to be Skyrim Online.

It's an MMOrpg. If you don't want other people in your game, you're going to have a bad time in an MMORPG.

All those random magical braziers that stay lit for a millennium in delves and dungeons? make them extinguished by default so the torchbearer has to light them as the group goes along.

Now I see NPCs with torches (and some with illuminated staves) so I assume that like the wayshrines (which seem to just be "shrines" to folks who have not been rescured from Cold Harbor) the cave braziers serve some sort of similar function - we just don't know what it is yet.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

We have discussed it before but there hasn't been a thread dedicated to it.

The mechanics for torches already exist in game. The /torch emote produces a torch that is functional. A slight tweak to the radius and intensity of the torches and they will be ready to go for dungeon delving. To accommodate this, darker nights and darker delves would be a good idea.

    ThVmNrD.jpg?1

Torches should be acquired through the following means:
    • NPC Merchant
    • Looted from containers
    • Pulled from sconces
    • Crown Store Torch Pack

Torches could eventually be added as a Craft-able item but this wouldn't be necessary. Other Elder Scrolls Games didn't allow Torches to be crafted so ESO could follow suit. There could be different torches of differing quality.

    Torch Qualities
    • Duration of flame
    • Radiance of flame

    Torch Types
    • Junk: Radiance the same as the current Torch Emote. 60 second duration.
    • Normal: Radiance twice as powerful as Junk Torch. 60 second duration.
    • Fine: Radiance twice as powerful as Junk Torch. 150 second duration.
    • Rare: Radiance twice as powerful as Normal Torch. 150 second duration.
    • Epic: Radiance twice as powerful as Normal Torch. 300 second duration.
    • Legendary: Radiance twice as powerful as Rare torch. 420 second duration.

Torches packs purchased from the Crown Store should be those of Legendary quality.

Illumination duration would be total time used, so if a player puts the torch away for any reason, the timer pauses. This could be supported by torches that have been used at all being converted to "Used Torch" with a consumption bar similar to an enchantment. Once consumed completely, the torch disappears. Players would want to keep a small stack of torches on them and when one torch is used up, a new torch is auto-equipped in its place.

Torches should be able to be equipped as a one-handed weapon. This way, a player could wield a sword and torch, a torch and shield, or just a torch by itself.

    0OTbImx.jpg?1
The bottom image would be the Legendary Torch.

    Thoughts?

I love the theory, I really really do.

However, I do not want anyone to be forced to use a torch while we're doing 4-man content. I don't need that added ambiance when I'm trying to run for gear or for achievements or even for experience. If it was an option to toggle I'd support it, but if it was ever made "part of game play" it would cause problems for everyone who's trying to have a good time playing the game the way we do (running content all the time and enjoying the combat and mechanics).

You guys take the fun out of everything. Every good suggestion is "but this, but this, but then I can't see in the dark".

Many, many, many games (all types from MUDs to SPs to multiplayers) have torches and dark nights.

This is not a groundbreaking request. No wheel needs reinvented.

This is just not that complicated.

This is laughable that anyone would say it's too complicated to put in. Good lord.

While we're at it, let's make it so that we don't need to wear armor to have mitigation, or we don't need to wield weapons to do damage. This lack of logic and refusal of realistic features that would add tactical gameplay is just mad.

Though it isn't a priority either.

Ah, nothing is a priority. To the pvpers, the priority is "balance". To rpers, it's realism and options to enter instanced places and sit on chairs, etc. To someone else, it's something else.

This doesn't need to be high priority, because it's not a very difficult change to put in. A reasonably capable development team could add more dynamic light levels and some basic lighting implements in a week.

All this stuff that people support because it's easy--it's just so boring! It's easy to enter an underground crypt that should be pitch black and be able to see just fine. It's easy. It's lazy.

The game would be so much more interesting if there were more tactical decisions to make and planning required.

Dark Souls 2's main marketing gimmick is the action and combat, not the exploration, but it has dark areas and torches/lights. It adds a ton to the game. You can see what it adds by playing DS1 which doesn't have this system.

Just firing up a torch in a very dark room, the room being bathed in the soft orange glow, running around with it, carefully edging ahead to see where enemies are, having to be ready to block and fight and switch back to your shield if need be -- these are things that add a ton to the gameplay.

    Static gameplay is boring.

Everyone worried about the REQUIREMENT to user torches needs to read my Immersive Darkness thread

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/170536/immersive-darkness-concept

THIS thread is SPECIFICALLY about torches. I guess I should update this OP to include a link. In my Immersive Darkness thread i address additional options.
