Riding Skill instead of Mount Skill?

I am personally NOT a fan of this new system. I mostly understand the conversion but having the mount itself be a mere skin annoying.

We were told months ago new mounts (like the Tiger and Guar) would have new, different stats AND ABILITIES. This appears to no longer be the case, everything is now vanilla. Your max your riding skill and every mount thereafter will have that same skill. B-O-R-I-N-G.

What I would MUCH prefer is your max riding skill ADDED to your mount's abilities, not replace them. with that max being 40/40, carry should ALWAYS be dependent on your mount, you can't coerce your mount into carrying more, that's just plain stupid.

Then new mounts would have special abilities such as:

    (spd/stam/carry)

Tiger (+0, +0, 20) Adds a fear factor to NPCs (i.e. you can run past them and they will not trigger a combat response). You will recover more quickly from a dismount. Mount will also stick around for 1 min after dismount and defend you (it will behave like a limited pet in attack stance)

Guar - (+0, +2, 60) Adds a hearty skill that makes them able to shrug off attacks/dismounting much better than horses.

    etc.

That's quite the leap to make. What makes you assume that? We already know that the ability to continue to run when stamina is depleted is the special ability that horses have, and we've been told that new non-horse mounts would have different special abilities. Just because the upgrades have been moved from the mount to the rider, why would you assume that they've changed their minds about different types of mounts having different special abilities? Has there been an announcement about this that I haven't seen?

Because we were also just told that mounts now are nothing but skins to apply your riding skill to. No more bonuses to horses for different stats, no more different accessories. You will max your riding skill and they will all be the same under the hood.

I have a hard time believing that a mere skin is going to have special abilities associated with it and the "stamina extender" will now simply be a part of the way riding mechanics work for every mount.

I hope I am wrong but in seeing the plethora of ways Zenimax has changed, altered or outright lied to us since the game started, I am not holding my breath.

As an addendum to my post above......maybe have extenders to the riding skill?

You will max train up to 50/50/50 THEN have the option to:

    - Train all up to 65/65/65
    - Train 2 of the three (ex. 70/70/50)
    - Train one up by 20 (ex 80/50/50)

It dosen't seem like buying multiple horses is useless. I don't believe the stats are account wide, so you would still need to boost the stats to max on each character. That would be helped with every horse you currently own on that character

So it's actually just a guess, and ZOS hasn't said anything new about the special abilities of different types of mounts then?

Edit: have you or anyone else had a chance to get a guar mount on PTS to see if it has the "continue to run when stamina has run out" ability of a horse, or if it has a different special ability of its own? That would pretty much tell us right there...

Following up on this, @PlagueMonk you may be interested to know that I got a chance to grab a guar mount on the PTS and it turns out you were right. The special ability of the horse (being able to run even when stamina has run out) is also the special ability of the guar. So yeah, it looks like they've abandoned the plan of giving different species of mount different special abilities. I'm disappointed. :|

To answer a few more questions:

    1. “What happens to my mount’s base stats?”

The base stats of your mounts are accounted for when we do the changeover. For instance, take two horses: One is an Imperial horse you've fed 50 Apples to, and the other is a Light Horse (which is the fastest horse in the game), also fed 50 Apples. When the changeover happens, that character will have a full 60 in their riding skill’s Speed category – we’ll have evaluated that character’s mounts, and applied the highest stats they had in each category.

As a second example, take a similar character. He’s got an Imperial Horse that's been fed 50 Apples, and a Light Horse that has only had 10 Apples. When the changeover happens, that character will have 50 points in their riding skill’s Speed category – again, the highest amount of Speed they had in all of their mounts.

In short, those choices you made before, both in choosing a more expensive and skilled mount, and in how you fed them, are taken into account for the conversion.

This isn't what I've seen happening on the PTS. I'm not sure if it's a bug or intentional, but I've made a post on the PTS forum about it. Horse stats - Intentional or Bug?

Appreciate the follow up and I'm sorry that my guess was correct. I would gladly have been wrong but considering Zenimax's track record (telling us one thing and then going back on that), it seemed to fall in line with all the other lies, half-truths and misdirection we were told.

Thanks for checking it out on the PTS @UrQuan‌, and sadly the game has been full of minds being changed. @PlagueMonk‌ I too am pretty disappointed with the lack of variation in the mounts besides their visuals. Ideas change as development progresses, I understand this and don't expect them to do "exactly" as they say, personally I just don't think the change was for the best this time.

Though alot of people probably will like it better this way, sadly because now there is no decision making about how to build the best horse for you, but rather only "which one is cuter".

The Visuals are broken on PTS currently, I have a 20/20/50 horse on PTS, it's showing the armor and saddle for stamina and speed, but not displaying saddle bags.

I do think if they are making the training to the rider instead of the horses that toons with multiple hybrid horses should have the stats on those horses added together not just picking the highest level stat from each horse. Otherwise those of us that went hybrid on several horses with smaller variations in the stats will be screwed. If we had specialized each horse with only one stat we would be credited for all our feedings (riding skill upgrades). Instead we are penalized if we chose a hybrid trade-off for each horse with only a slight increase to a different stat on each. We will lose all our other riding skill upgrades for the horses with the lower stats.

For a simplified example a character with:
    • Horse one:
      • Speed 20% (+5 from base)
      • Stamina 10% (+0 from base)
      • Carrying 45% (+45 from base)
    • Horse two:
      • Speed 40% (+25 from base)
      • Stamina 10% (+0 from base)
      • Carrying 25% (+25 from base)
    • Horse three:
      • Speed 35% (+20 from base)
      • Stamina 25% (+15 from base)
      • Carrying 15% (+15 from base)
From my understanding that character will end up with riding skill of:
    • Speed 40%
    • Stamins 25%
    • Carrying 45%
So we lose all the gold we spent leveling lower stats on the horses that have the lower stats. These should instead be added together up to the new max riding skill level for each stat in order to make it fair so the character did not waste their riding skill increases. Thus the new riding skill should be:
    • Speed 50% (+5+25+20 from base)
    • Stamina 15% (+0+0+15 from base)
    • Carrying 60% (+45+25+15 from base but capped at max riding skill level)
Those that bought expensive horses could then have +10% added to the max level in each stat for which they bought an expensive horse.

Otherwise I support and am happy with this change which puts the skill level on the rider instead of the individual horse.

^ I've accepted that my main character running 2 hybrid horses is going to get screwed over.

On my 2nd character I've now got 3 imperial horses, each one being fed one of the 3 stats daily. Theyre now almost all lvl 30. It'll be a big help once 1.6 hits.
