Monthly "Fix your UI Zenimax" post 2

Welcome back to our monthly "Fix your UI Zenimax!" post! This one promises to be a really nice one since the Road Ahead came out yesterday and Zenimax spoke about consoles and specifically the UI of the consoles.

I'll begin by quoting the road ahead:
It’s also important to note that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of ESO are not just ports of the PC/Mac game. We have completely replaced the PC user interface with a console-specific UI designed from the ground-up with a controller and a living room play experience in mind.

This is extremely good news since it means that the PC UI is in fact a totally separate branch of development from the console and means that Zenimax no longer has an excuse for the horrible UI choices in the PC version like the Q wheel. This also means that the PC interface which was obviously designed with consoles in mind, wasn't even good enough for consoles themselves. At last, we now know what the UI team has been doing instead of fixing the problems in PC version: Designing and developing console version.

During this month, I've gathered feedback from many players regarding the UI so as usual I'll be posting here what came out the most as well as the regular things that have been broken/missing since launch.

-= Guild management & stores =-

There's a whole list of UI additions that should be made to Guilds & stores to make them functional. Among those:

Raid Notifications:
This is especially important for trading guilds. Players should have the option on a guild per guild basis to choose to receive or not the raid notifications. This option can be introduced in the form of a check box and will allow people to filter those messages as they want.

Guild Mailing: Give the ability to Guild Masters to mass email the members of the guild. This can be done by an addon but there have been reports of people getting wrongfully baned or disconnected because of the large amount of mails getting sent at once to their guild members.

Guild Store Search: Guild store could use some additional filters as well as a search box. Now that the UI is different from console, there really is no reason not to add this. A good example of what could be implemented is the functionalities provided by the "Awesome Guildstore" addon. This addon's search box is sadly limited to filtering the current page instead of filtering the whole list of results from all the pages. This addition would make Guildstore search less tedious and ease the people who continuously ask for an Auction House claiming the current system is a major waste of time.

Sales Recap and name of sold object in mails: Include what has been sold and in which guildstore in the sent mails and introduce some sort of "self" sales recap such as the "Shopkeeper"(discontinued) addon provides.

-= General UI/Quality of life =-

A good Ui is a UI you can mod easily and quickly at will these are some additions that would really make the UI enter the 21st century:

"Total freedom to move UI elements:" With a "lock" "unlock" feature, players would be able to reposition the Health, Magicka and Stamina bars where ever they want. This also goes for skill bars (move them on the screen and toggle between vertical & horizontal) but also raid window (reposition it, change the size of the health bars, allow for horizontal positioning so it takes a smaller chunk of the screen).

Lock Items: Who hasn't mistakenly deconstructed or sold that piece of gear they where saving for that special occasion (research, switching gears, alts). A simple lock at the bottom of the icons would allow us to keep our gear safe in our bank or our inventory.

Saved Gear Sets: To put everybody to the same level as people using Alpha Tools, we should be able to save a set number of Gear+skillbars that can be loaded with one binded key. I know this has been said to be on the works, have high expectations about it.

Total Immersion: Key toggle to enable/disable all the UI elements at will to really be immersed in the game. This can be moded even farther by introducing the ability to choose what disappears and what stays on the screen when the key is pressed.

"Show me numbers!": Ability to toggle on or off he numbers/percentages of health stamina & Mgicka bars (don't think this is possible in stock UI, haven't used it in months) for your character and also for your group mates (only for the HP part, I'm not suggesting their stamina & magicka numbers to be shown).

Nametags: I heard it's in the works. Go for it. Make it togglable and small. It would also be welcome to be able to "flag" a specific guild (which could also be implemented as a checkbox in the guilds interface).

Minimap: There used to be a minimap in the game during early alpha stages (I think even beta?). I heard the code is still there but not activated, many players enjoy having that information on the screen and a togglable minimap would be welcomed by many.
-= Combat system =-

Weapon Swap: I'd rather have a functional swapping system so I don't really like this idea, but some people suggested that you allow us to bind two different keys for each weapon so swapping becomes easier. (Instead of spamming the rotation key and switching twice in a row, you can spam one key without fear). If weapon swap continues to be tedious, unresponsive and isn't fixed, this could be a nice workaround that some players would definitively welcome.

Potion selection: People have stated over and over again how tedious potion selection is in the game. Being forced to press & hold a key during combat and then move the mouse towards the selected potion is a waste of time that can get you killed. A quick fix to it's shortcomings is to assign a number to each of the slots and allow people to bind keys to those slots (such as 67890). Once again, since the dev branch is not common to the consoles's, this shouldn't be an issue. This would allow people who like the current system to keep using it and people who want a more functional UI to have it. Ideally, people should be able to choose if they want "instant potion consumption" when hitting the binded key or if they want only the selection to be done that way and still hit the Q button to consume the last selected potion.

Buff/Debuff/DoT Tracking: Either release the API elements that will allow addons to know for sure if a DoT or a buff landed or introduce some kind of tracking for taunts, Buffs and DoTs.

DPS meter: Because it's easy. Because it helps people improve. Because it can bo toggled on or off at will. No need for an "in game" functionality to "post" the DPS, that way people won't be forced to use it since they are the only ones who can see the information.

Self Recount: Bind a key, press it at the end of the fight, see how much damage was dealt to each enemy and how much damage each skill did. In no way this should be a Party recount to see the performance of other people but self performance: Yes!

Retrocompatiblity:

When changes are done to the API, please include retro-compatibility for functions that are changed but not deprecated so that 90% of the addons aren't broken because you decided to change the name of a function.

-= LFG System =-

It is my understanding that some of the stuff in this post was implemented (to a certain extent) to the LFG tool. Most of the recommendations in that post still apply though and would make the LFG tool a good tool.

Conclusion
Months after release, there is still a LOT of work to be done and multiple bugs to be fixed. The UI is one of the main reasons this games has had such a bad reputation in most MMO sites and also the reason many MMORPG players end up leaving the game. Fixing it would increase the ratings of the game and answer to the pleas of both long time MMO players as well as people who just want an immersed solo game.

Addons are not the solution. They are unreliable, they are broken by every new update, they (aparently) cause endless loading screens, memory problems, game problems, and we shouldn't need addons for BASIC functionalities, we shouldn't endure all of the above to get things that should be included in the game. As you can see, I didn't include combat clouds nor combat logs in the list since I believe only a fraction of the players use them and it should stay in the addon world, at least at the moment.

If you have any additions I forgot, feel free to post them, I'll update the post.

It would be awesome if ZOS in their "continuous efforts" to better communicate with us would eventually answer to one of these posts to explain where they stand on all these issues.

Thanks for a good read. You should keep doing this every month till zos finally fixes their UI and adds basic functions and basic info in the UI. This is the best MMO on the market when using addons. It would be even better if we didn't have to use them for basic functionality and deal with the mess that happens every update when addons don't work and we are stuck with abysmal stock UI

As much as I hated the MMO because it meant no more solo game released for years, you should check out SWTOR then. You can even save layouts of the UI you made & share them with other players

Uhg, did, and didn't enjoy. Movies, sure. But not thousands of my hours. Elder scrolls series has had a sweet place in my soul since arena. And I'll probably play teso until they pull the plug. That doesn't mean I won't be trying to claw my eyes out every patch because of all the glorious ui errors when mods stop functioning. I just tell myself, "it's okay, zeni will put these functions in someday..." I.. hope..

I was practically agreeing with everything given their harmless nature and customization enhancement.

But I started to become weary when you started mentioning combat-related UI like the buff/debuff tracking, DPS meter and self recount due to how it would essentially feel mandatory in some cases. But those were easily enough allayed when you mentioned about no in-game positing functionality being included, no party damage recap and of course the toggle ability of each. Really does seem to ensure that the choices is up to you and only you. So for this, I have little to no reason to say no to them.

But of course, if those things do get implemented I would prefer to manage the size as well as the position of those things as well (though I'm sure this is included in your 'freedom to move UI elements').

But one more thing for the QoL stuff....under the nametags I would also like the ability to display at least one of the guild names as well. For nametags also would be the ability to make them disappear completely during combat only to return when not in a hostile situation. The ability to customize exactly who could see your guild and/or character name would be nice as well. For example, only allow other people in your guild able to see your guild name in order to better identify them with ease. Color differentiations would be acceptable as well. [It is far from a necessity, but it would be nice.]

I like your list, but let's be honest - you're being pretty conservative by modern MMO standards:
    - How about integrated voice chat?
    - How about the ability to sort gear in our inventory?
    - How about a "lock" tab on items so we don't accidentally sell them?
    - How about integrated gear sets so we can quickly change our equipment outside of combat?

I could go on and on, and I know there are some addons that do things like this, but they break with every update, they often don't work perfectly, and I don't like worrying about malicious code.

C'mon ZOS - give us a better PC interface, since you don't have to worry about console compatibility anymore!

The UI in this game should be a shameful embarrassment to zos and I've harped on this since beta (finally giving up on the /feedback method). Kudos to you OP for keeping this alive.

@diabeticDemon18 Practice makes better. On each post I debate (hot headedly sure but IMO it's the best form of debate), I hear feedback see what people fear, don't want, argue against and for it. Then on each post I change stuff to try to make it cater to everybody's wishes and not just mines or people I play with. That being said, I do feel their UI is useless and that it doesn't belong to a High Quality MMO like this one aims to be, else I wouldn't bother writing these posts and fighting for a change. I also understand some people are fine with it which is why I'm not asking for things to be forced on those people.

@rophez_ESO Great ideas, some of them have been debated in other posts as well.

Regarding integrated voice chat, it seems it's been a failure in most games it has been tried on (glitches & stuff). IMO the best thing to do would be to ally with a company that does this well like mumble or teamspeak and integrate their systems into the game. In any case, even if I agree it would be nice to have a bug free voice chat in the MMO, it's something that goes beyond user interface and IMO deserves a topic to itself due to the complexity of the functionality.

Sort gear in inventory: I must admit I don't really have issues with current inventory which is why I haven't spoken much about it. If you can share some pics (or recommend addons that do this so I can try them), I'll be happy to fight for it a swell.

Lock tab on items good idea too.

Integrated gear sets: I heard it's in development, will add this and lock tab to OP.

Meh ZOS employees roaming the forum prolly can't speak freely on some subjects because they aren't allowed to or things have not been decided. It's my 4th or 5th post about the UI and not even once has a ZOS spokesman posted in it except to say "bla bla bla read the TOS bla bla bla". In my book, if you can't speak freely on something, it's because people aren't going to like the answer... like "UI sucks, we know it, but our experts are working on console because that's where we're going to make money so you guys will have to wait :)"

Guess they think it's better to just:

Sort gear in inventory: what I mean is, sub tabs for different types of armor, or pieces (heavy armor, helms, etc). Even tabs where you can assign certain pieces of gear to show up. For example, my dps gear in a tab, my tanking gear in a tab, etc. (Advanced Filters UI addon by ingeniousclown is an example, but I think much more could be done.)

Great post, Magnus. I don't disagree with any of your suggestions but my biggest thumbs up has to go toward fixing the Q-wheel. I've said it before- but, I play on a gaming laptop without a mouse quite often and the Q wheel is really the only thing I feel is really clumsy with no mouse vs. mouse.
  • lestaudenmaierub17_ESO
Last month I contested whether you really did post this monthly and you showed that you did. This month I'm just going to click on agree. Keep up the good fight.

P.S. I really think ZOS could do this game a lot of justice if they spent one entire update cycle just handling the UI. Its our gateway from the computer chair to Tamriel and it really needs some work.

Especially in light of the recent debacle with the add-on that stole people's money and the news that the console UI will be completely different, it is far past time for ZOS to take seriously our requests to improve the UI already.

Thus is much better than previous one. Nice.
Key toggle to enable/disable all the UI elements at will to really be immersed in the game.
We already have it. You can switch your UI off.
And I can't agree for other General UI/Quality of life because we have nice addons for it(like Azurah).

Will check this when I get home.

And Azurah seems nice. Not a wonder it's made by the same guy that devs Srendarr buff information addons. Kith is OP.

    @Zorrashi

Thanks for the feedback, added the guild information for nameplates.

Lol I understand why some people wouldn't like it. I agree there could be some more, I personally use ggFrames. Glad you don't try to force what you like on others though, that's something you don't see with everyone nowadays :)

OP, thanks for this. It is very tiresome being held hostage by ZOS to this add-on system they encourage but don't support. Asking them to even acknowledge there is a problem feels like banging head against wall. From the new Roadmap:
Worked to increase our overall transparency and communication with you, our community, which is also a continuing effort.
I call BS. I never see any ZOS response to our UI issues, they only respond to administer the forum. Like the old adage goes, they treat us like mushrooms-kept in the dark and fed BS.

I'm sure you're quite right about ZOS employees following policies about forum responses, which is why it is very galling when they pat themselves on the back for their communication with players. Has no one learned the lesson that honesty is the best policy? I'd rather hear the truth from them, even if it's "We think the UI is fine and have no plans to change it". At least then we have a choice of accepting that reality and play as is, or move on to another game. I'm sure it's that last choice which keeps them silent, the fear that telling us they have no plans to fix the UI will drive players away. I'm sure some players would leave, but I think a lot more would stay, and maybe more attention would be focused on supporting add-ons. But the official party line wherein they claim to be improving communication is all style and no substance. These guys should consider running for public office.
