Why do you like ESO?

With all the conflict in the forums (probably a miniscule part of the player base -- same people always posting), I got to thinking about why I care enough to even bother.

I do love Elder Scrolls and I want to see this game thrive. Regardless of whether you complain about the latest patch or white knight, probably we all have that in common to some degree.

What is it about ESO that makes you care about it, like it, want it to succeed?

For me the top three:

1 Subscription based with no in-game cash shop or free-to-play option (seriously)

2 Art: The art style of Elder Scrolls -- it's Elder Scrolls! -- and the quest writing and funny things NPCs say

3 The importance of crafting (i.e., it's not a gear grind like most themeparks)

Your #2 nails a lot of it for me. And I think that's true of a lot of people. Zenimax needs to get a clue that the ES fans ARE their core audience and the only ones who are likely to stick around after the next shiny new title comes out. The long term success of this game will not be determined by the "leet" and "hardcore" players who are blowing through the content to get to cap and "beat" the game. Once they've done so, they'll be gone no matter how much Zeni scrambles to court them. So paying attnetion to, and implementing, as many things as possible that will emulate what players loved about the Elder Scrolls series is really where the future of this game lays.

I just hope Zenimax figures that out in time.

Terrible question to ask, I'm starting to wonder now.....

Overall theme of the game, I like the limited Skills to use and the Skills Progression.

Probably the idea of Champion system and spell crafting are currently keeping me wanting to play. I'm really hoping they do this well.

I agree with all 3. I would also add that I love the play style and combat.

This game has a lot of issues. Mostly due to a rookie staff of developers that have never developed an MMO before and seem to have too much pride to look around at other successful MMOs. That being said, it's still the best MMO on the market in my view.

True, bro! (I loled  )

As for me - I like this universe. In all games in first place for me was lore, quests, and dialogs.

I enjoy the PvP in this game. The open areas and the recent removal of forward camps has improved the battles in Cyrodiil.

The overall beauty of the game keeps me wanting more. I get excited going to a new area within a zone too see how ZOS did the artwork, then follow some interesting questlines that continue to lead me around to show me all the details.

The community is pretty decent as well. I have learned alot from reading the forums, and have improved my PvP and PvE skills by listening to others and building their knowledge into my own play style.

    1. Story / quest design
    2. Combat
    3. Graphics / art style

So, these are basically my top three. I could add more points, but I wanted to point out only three.

I just tried out some other MMOs lately, because I normally need "something else" to play. Doesn't really matter what, just "something else".
And then I had to find out, that combat was either to boring or to UI centered. Quests and leveling was mainly boring.
Graphics were sometimes okay, sometimes not, depending on the game.

Graphics is also the point, where I would like to see some improvements, as I don't like the mist at the edge of my visual range. (Like with SweetFX, but in an official way). And unfortunately armor looks painted and has to few layers. Nevertheless, I love the graphics, especially light effects.

    I have a love-hate relationship with ESO.
The stories, the art design, the endgame content, the options available for character customization, .. The game could be awesome BUT there are so many small bugs and issues making everything so difficult. :disappointed:

I have to say that your numbers 2 and 3 are high on my list, although I did run into a snag...

In my case, crafting is a big part, because crafting matters to players (even if they are not aware of it) I enjoy the crafting and wish that there was more to do, more styles, more traits, more items... I hope, when and if player housing is added, that Crafting will be a big part of building/furnishing the house.

The Art is also a high point for me, but I am starting to think I need to try a lower setting on my graphics to see if things load faster, I am getting tired of having to wait for things to load or guessing where they are.

I enjoy the Chest mechanics, I would not mind if there were more then 3 possible settings for each pin and the stuff inside was based more on the difficulty of the chests...

I like the fact that I have not noticed gold farmers in a long time, I am sure they still exist, but I have not noticed them.

I enjoy the kind of skill based nature of the game and while I would like to see each of the different major subsets to be as effective, but I have not got a problem with the ability to build a gimped character...
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most...

    Likes:
    • Exploring wilderness pays dividends. Chests, quests, etc.
    • Combat is pretty free form.
    • Lots of loot.
    • Crafting is fun.
    • Quests are -usually- nicely done.
    • Excellent graphics/environment/etc

    Dislikes:
    • Oddly, exploring in dungeons never pays dividends. They put offshoot paths in lots of dungeons but if you wander down there ... nothing but a mob or two. Weird.
    • Too few action buttons. Need 2 more for a completed build.
    • Solo dungeons aren't solo. They need to be instanced for you, so you aren't racing people thru them. All things should be soloable, just the skill level needed varies. Or customize the build for the fight.
    • Not enough storage space
    • Guild stores suck. No text search? No filtering for unknown recipes? Really? Really?

    For me:
    - Quality storytelling throughout the questlines, interesting and memorable NPCs
    - Attention to detail and those little 'discoverable' touches, notes found in places that have nothing to do with a quest but add to the worldbuilding. This is one of my favourite aspects of the Elder Scrolls series and I'm glad to see they've carried it through here.
    - Can be entirely self-reliant in crafting
    - Art/graphics quality

I love the game because it's my type of MMO, well-suited to my solo/co-operative PvE playstyle, rich with TES lore, and with for me an almost totally smooth performance with no significant technical or other issues. Now, if it just had an Alliance-based auction house it would be perfect!

    For me..

    1.) Story /lore
    2.) Exploration
    3.) Art style/graphics
    4.) Customization
5.) Freedom to solo and group as i like.
    6.) Combat
    7.) Sounds/music

However i must add here that my favorite part is leveling from lvl 1 to 50. If Zenimax can make game beyond lvl 50 as fun as it is from lvl 1 to 50..they got a long time subscriber here.

You know, this makes me think of how cool it would be to be able to write your own books and leave them lying around in game for people to find. Sadly, I know this is absolutely never going to be possible as it would require an entire team of censors to weed out all the pure pornographic garbage some jacktards would churn out. But maybe they could do a contest where people could submit entries and the top 3 could end up in the game. We could write some good titles to give the Lusty Argonian Maid some competition. Hmmm... I haz an idea... new post incoming....

I love ESO because it respects itself. The writing, dialogue, art design, music and sound are all pretty much top notch. The world feels realized, and not quite just tacked on or zoned (even if there are zones moving from one zone to the next follows a similar design style). There's a lot of loer offering a sort of second layer of story told through lorebooks in the game which I love.

And more than anything... it's true to its world. Unlike certain other MMOs, they're not adding gag NPCs or pop culture references, they're not putting in subtle in-jokes everywhere and the world feels consistent throughout. Certain other fantasy MMOs lost me when they, for example, added motorcycles to the game. It felt horribly forced and didn't really mesh with the lore. Steam machines are fine (to a point) but if you go too far it kills the immersion.

And ESO is able to really keep the immersion levels going, and keep the deep.

Okay, since we are going to necro this thread...

1 The cash shop is not pay to win *to me* although I can see the argument from some people that xp scrolls are. I don't mind them.

2 Possible future gear grind is still a concern, but I can get by with crafting and I understand we will be able to buy monster gear in the (I hope) near future. I expect a certain amount of grind from mmorpgs, but I don't want the WoW treadmill type of gear grind. But I understand that's fun for a lot of people.

3 It's a beautiful game (I mean it in the aesthetic sense). I love the Elder Scrolls and Tamriel and the art is amazing

    4 ESO has fun combat

Having said all that, I'm kind of on a break these days playing other games (mostly pvp games because I am kind of bored with Cyro as it is now -- there is no point to it), but I love ESO, and it just has to do with me and my own life and gaming cycles. So I'm still here in the forums once in a while and I log in daily for my crafting dailies. I'm sure I will play more in the new DLC. Also maybe level some more alts to 50 once in a while.

ESO, for me, is still the best mmorpg on the market, though of course there are issues I'm concerned with, the chief of which would be the game feeling like a gear grind. It doesn't now, because I can enjoy the content I want to enjoy with the gear I have.
