Name allready in use. Solution to free names that no longer play.

You know when you have that perfect name but it is in use?

There are propably thousands of perfectly good names from launch month that never will be in use again, i think there should be mechanism that gives name available again after 6 moths of consecutive non subbed time and assigns a free name change to that character if ever played again.

If you wish to keep your dear names, keep yourself subbed, simple yes?

Nope , it shouldnt ever happen.

In MMOs like this with a paid sub the best bet was to wait for a new server to appear , this way you could try to grab names , but in a game like this with a mega server once the name is taken you are out of luck lols.

These chars will probably be saved until the time the game closes its doors.

No, maybe after 5 years they can start cleaning out names, losing your name should require more than just missing a month sub.

"Losing" a name would almost equate to a "saved" character being lost. It wouldn't necessarily have to mean this, but it'd be more hassle than it's worth to free-up names while saving character data and making the user choose another name 'if' he/she ever re-subs. The money--or potential money for Zeni--is in keeping the name. I'm guess they'd lose less [new] people who can't get the name they want initially, versus the potential loss of a re-sub that doesn't come back because his name was taken.

The easiest short and long-term solution is to leave it be.

Choose wisely your name, race, class, and looks - at least for now.

Yes and only foolish names are available after couple of years, very good indeed.

Players who have not played for a long time propably wwill never play again and those really do not need names anymore.

Either that or like in WOW, where you can check from armory if the character has been unplayed for longer than 3 moths, you propably will get the name by contacting customer support. You dont get a name if sub is active, even if character has been unplayed for years, as long as sub is on, they do not free it.

If sub has been inactive for more than couple of moths, they almost allways free that name for you to use and flag the old owner of name to free name change. You do not need better reason than "I want it for my new alt" to get it done.

    Works well.

I dont know if WoW works on that basis , only played a for a bit and never really cared much about checking it later, but i never heard any of my friend who keep going in and out ever say this happens.

You are free to try , go contact support and ask for the name to be open for you.

Still they probably wont ever do this officially , the whole concept of your char is here waiting for you to return is really important to try to get people to resub.

Personally , i dont usually return to MMOs i have left myself , but if i ever did that to find my names taken , that would be the quickest unsub you will ever see lols , i wouldnt even make it to inside the game :P.

I made all 8 of my alts within seconds of early launch going live, just picking random class and race.

I managed to grab extremely popular and important names in TES Lore. Then I waited a week, then quickly remade them how I actually wanted in the middle of the night.

Done it 8 times if i remember correctly, asked about 12 times and those names i did not get were on active accounts.

I was sceptical too when i first heard of this but it was easy and fast, got name i wanted or close match if not exact and could continue with the name i wanted. Character whos name i got, did not disappear anywhere either, it just got flagged for free name change and naturally they are also free to try and ask their name back if i was to be inactibe for long.

I find it funny how people think they are entitled to a name in a game if they dont pay sub for a long time, if i dont pay, they are free to free my names as long as my characters stay. In WWOW, i keep active sub to save my names. This is perfectly normal and reasonable to me.

I did this too and i have names saved there but if i ever be away from many consecutive moths, i do not feel entitled to them anymore as i dont give anything to support the game if i dont have active sub.

Same , but in my case i went for popular series/games/animes... names , you may have a similar one , but i got the exact one people respond to when i talk in chat lols :P.

That happens because they say your char will be here waiting for your return and that is really important to get people to resub.

Like i said , if a game changes my chars name , i dont care if you have the best MMO ever made , i will unsub and never play your game again lols.

Reason i said i wouldnt even make it to ingame , i would just turn around and cancel my sub without ever even picking a new name :P.

Since we have not reached even the end of the 6 month subs yet & most MMOs dont recover used names until years have past, if at all.
Maybe, if you can't find a free version of Legolas (or other well known copyrighted name) to use, you could try:
    http://fantasynamegenerators.com/dunmer_names.php

or similar to solve your lack of imagination, or try reading the lore for names used in the previous games, as a starting point

If I counted correctly there are more than 25^27~6*10^35 things you can write as a name. Even if 0.0001 % of them are viable names than we are not going to run out of them soon.

I do not really care about popular names from movies, books or comics :P All i care is to get a name that fits the lore and name ruling of my race/gender and we all know how they are first to go.

Some will say dramatically to unsub if name is taken away but i find his hard to believe.

Well, then a name should stop being a primary key. After all, there're people with exactly the same names in real life too :) Why not let us do the same in-game? Other will have to remember that John-elf and John-orc are 2 different Johns :P

For example, I would like to change my UserID, for example, or remove the nickname from my character's name that I had to add because the first name was taken. And I've never seen a player with that name or UserID. And I see absolutely no reason why shouldn't I? Just because I created my character a few hours later than somebody else? (I play since beta and early access).

Assign a personal ID number to each character that will be a primary key for the game/developers to distinguish them. After you do that - give us an opportunity to either keep our names or change them for free once. Problem solved. And it wasn't hard, this system is widely used.

Let us use the names we want!

The first step would be understanding that there's no reason for the character's name to be unique if we already have unique UserID. I really just wanted for all my characters to have the same name and the same as userID :) But then again, I can't use the userID I want....

Nope , im not joking at all lols.

Was playing SWTOR and the game started to die much quicker than they thought it would i guess , so they started to merge servers , i had to join on a bigger more active server where my names were already taken.

I did unsub on the same day :P.

    Agreed with others.
You really shouldn't lose a name if you take some time away from the game, there are an absurd numbers of names available if you make something original or add a surname.

    Sorry, your loss.

Did happen to me though, was disappointed for a while but then i got fond of my new names.

All in all, would have been better if unique names would never made it. It is thing of the past and todays games should not work like that.

There is this thing called "lore" which actually implies limitations to your naming... If you care about lore that is.

I have not yet encountered a situation where i can not get reasonable name that fits lore but eventually it will happen to me and other people. They will be just as unhappy with that as would a person who notices his name is taken while he was away :)

Either that or like in WOW, where you can check from armory if the character has been unplayed for longer than 3 moths, you propably will get the name by contacting customer support

Those cheap and rude tactics hopefully never turn up at ESO. I find it not only disrespectful but plain rude to do this at WOW.

Every person with RL will sooner or later not play for a few months or even years. To lose all your chars because of some "rude person" who wants to bully you is not acceptable.

In my opinion no player has any right to demand the removal of a char that someone else created first. Its bad luck if your name is already gone, seriously I don't have all my fav. names either at ESO.

EA did this with SWTOR and the day I lost 8 chars I stopped playing and guess what I was subbed since day one of Early Access!

At ESO we have a wonderful naming system, players can have a Surname and its just 8 chars per server so that the risk of not finding a name is very small if not impossible.

I have made at least 12 characters since the game began ( I get bored during VR levels always and starting again is like a new game) and use lore to name my characters. Not had one refusal yet. I tend to slightly modify existing names to suit my own preference, after all a set of 30 names from previous games are hardly going to be the only names in use continent wide.
