In MMOs like this with a paid sub the best bet was to wait for a new server to appear , this way you could try to grab names , but in a game like this with a mega server once the name is taken you are out of luck lols.
These chars will probably be saved until the time the game closes its doors.
Yes and only foolish names are available after couple of years, very good indeed.
Players who have not played for a long time propably wwill never play again and those really do not need names anymore.
Either that or like in WOW, where you can check from armory if the character has been unplayed for longer than 3 moths, you propably will get the name by contacting customer support. You dont get a name if sub is active, even if character has been unplayed for years, as long as sub is on, they do not free it.
If sub has been inactive for more than couple of moths, they almost allways free that name for you to use and flag the old owner of name to free name change. You do not need better reason than "I want it for my new alt" to get it done.
Works well.

I managed to grab extremely popular and important names in TES Lore. Then I waited a week, then quickly remade them how I actually wanted in the middle of the night.

Done it 8 times if i remember correctly, asked about 12 times and those names i did not get were on active accounts.
I was sceptical too when i first heard of this but it was easy and fast, got name i wanted or close match if not exact and could continue with the name i wanted. Character whos name i got, did not disappear anywhere either, it just got flagged for free name change and naturally they are also free to try and ask their name back if i was to be inactibe for long.
I find it funny how people think they are entitled to a name in a game if they dont pay sub for a long time, if i dont pay, they are free to free my names as long as my characters stay. In WWOW, i keep active sub to save my names. This is perfectly normal and reasonable to me.Rook_Master wrote: »I made all 8 of my alts within seconds of early launch going live, just picking random class and race.

I did this too and i have names saved there but if i ever be away from many consecutive moths, i do not feel entitled to them anymore as i dont give anything to support the game if i dont have active sub.
I do not really care about popular names from movies, books or comics :P All i care is to get a name that fits the lore and name ruling of my race/gender and we all know how they are first to go.
Some will say dramatically to unsub if name is taken away but i find his hard to believe.

You know when you have that perfect name but it is in use?
There are propably thousands of perfectly good names from launch month that never will be in use again, i think there should be mechanism that gives name available again after 6 moths of consecutive non subbed time and assigns a free name change to that character if ever played again.
If you wish to keep your dear names, keep yourself subbed, simple yes?

If it were truly the perfect name, then it probably wouldn't already be in use. But I suppose that if someone were to happen to be the one-hundred-thousandth player to think "Ned Stark" is just the perfect name, then they could always just change a couple of letters in it and spell it "I'm Unoriginal."
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
There is this thing called "lore" which actually implies limitations to your naming... If you care about lore that is.
I have not yet encountered a situation where i can not get reasonable name that fits lore but eventually it will happen to me and other people. They will be just as unhappy with that as would a person who notices his name is taken while he was away
