Does ESO need crafting orders?

    ESO needs crafting orders
Would it be good or bad to have "orders in transit" that could be ransacked by thieves who are tracked by the guards ?

Would seeing wagons carrying your goods across the road network from crafter to buyer add to the immersion and depth of ESO ?

Would adding the potential for loss of 'crafted to order' goods add to the game or make it too frustrating ?

Would you escort the wagons carrying your goods personally and take on any thieves ?

No, no it would not. For the same reason that everything else has to have anti-grief safeguards built into it----random strangers on the internet can really be jerks.

Probably right.... just thinking out loud.

    ESO needs crafting orders
Ok, now that the debate has started, let me add my 5 cents.

I see a crafting order like a player given quest.
    • Existing npcs (such as the appropriate vendors) act as quest brokers.
    • Player A (the questgiver) can approach these npcs and gets a new conversation item which allows him to define crafting orders.
    • Player A defines precisely what he wants and sets the quest reward in gold. This gold is paid by the questgiver on placing the crafting order (and deposited at the npc).
    • The interface needs to be precise (set item, set, quality, style and trait) but needs to be very different from the crafting interface so that there is no confusion.
    • Crafting Orders are only accessible to certified crafters. The given crafting order is shown as a crafting writ on the writ board to fit the new system introduced in update 5.
    • Player B (the crafter) can approach the board, choose from a variety of open crafting orders and select one.
    • Upon so accepting the quest, the crafting order will disappear from the board, so that no one else can take it.
    • The crafter has a limited amount of time (say 2 hours) to craft the requested items. If he fails, he will have to pay a fee and the quest goes back up.
    • He succeeds by approaching a specific location in time and submitting the requested items. This interface can be similar to the trade interface (between players) just without the upper part, such that the submit button turns clickable only if all requested items have been added to the list.
    • Upon successfully submitting all requested items in time, the crafter receives the deposited gold as a reward.

    Bonus Features
    • It's fine to limit access to crafting orders to more advanced players (maybe by requiring a specific level or a new crafting skill in the appropriate skill line), so that new players are not confused between the two options of crafting and crafting orders.
    • The system will only work if the prices are fair for both parties. I have two options in mind to accelerate the price finding process: (A) Allow crafters to whisper to the quest giver to let them know if prices were set much too low, and (B) allow crafters to make counter proposals that need to be accepted by the quest giver before becoming official. I am undecided which option I like better. Maybe someone has a better idea.
    • To further control this process, there should be a small fee for the quest giver to put up the crafting order, so he is incentivized to offer more reasonable prices. This is essentially a price finding fee for the quest giver, as in it will cost him to find the minimum viable price.
    • In my opinion it makes sense to limit the listing time for crafting orders to a short time such as 24h. This will accelerate the price finding process, and also most people want their gear crafted quickly anyway.

EDIT: Updated to fit upcoming Update 5

Sounds pretty good to me. Should it be the craft NPC + trade NPC ? ie some NPC sell armour at a stall or the NPC where the armour is made at the crafting station or both ?

Don't see the need for a NPC middle man...but not opposed to it either.

Initially thought of the vendors, but you are right, the npcs next to the crafting stations would even make more sense. But they usually sell stuff as well. To keep it transparent, it should be symmetrical. If an npc sells heavy armor, you can set up a crafting order through him.

I would like it if the NPC vendors had a more central role in the game. They're pretty much useless and mainly decoration. I've written another post a few months ago where I suggest a consignment based addon to the existing trading system which involves these NPCs.

I would have answered if it wasn't another freaken poll. However, since it's a poll I refuse to give any real reply.

I was just thinking about this today. So, I googled a bit and the very first result I got was this post. I am a bit disappointed since this was mentioned in 2014 and there haven't been any word about it. Guess it was deemed unnecessary. Let's wake up this discussion once again :)

This is a good idea, but there's something that bothers me. What's to prevent a player from putting up an order, having a crafter make it, and not accept the order? Essentially, the crafter will be stuck with the gear they made with their own mats with nobody to buy it.

So I notice a new trend.. People are not allowed to play a necromancer ingame, so they resurrect very old posts instead :s

Need is such a strong word. I wish polls would avoid it and change their phrasing. While ESO doesn't NEED what you propose, it would certainly be cool and make the game more fun.

    Hello there,

Seeing as this thread has been quite dead for nearing 2 years, we've felt it necessary to put this Draugr to rest. Though if you'd like to create a newer thread to discuss this topic, please feel free to do so  with so many crafters out there, it may be a well welcomed topic!

    Enjoy the day!
