Fishing problems

I did lots of fishing over the weekend in Shadowfen this weekend - and noticed some problems

• green trophy fish have value of 0
• if you are using incorrect bait for the body of water and get "used bait;" even if you go back to the correct bait you never will never get a good hit on that fishing hole again.

yea the green trophy fish thing is a known bug. I didn't know about the other one though. That's not good, sometimes I don't know what water type I am fishing in...

I have that same problem - but I came up with a process. To learn how to fish I \used luminary fishme addon, which tells you when you change the bait what its good for.

But its not always easy to tell. Who knew Shadowfen wasn't just fillled with foul swamps? And lakes and rivers seem to be interchangeable. So the initial fish caught (assuming its not "used bait" ) will tell me which water type and then I go to the correct bait.

The stuck "used bait" thing might be my imagination but it happened probably 7-10 times while figuring out my process and afterwards I had no more "used bait" events. (I would stubbornly try about 5 times with correct bait after the initial "used bait.")

-In Shadowfen, there's only three different water types. Best to use bait that you don't care to throw away and see what type of fish it catches (if you keep using used bait, keep trying until it snags a fish that corresponds to the water type). Afterwards, use the right bait. It's about trial and error. In Shadowfen, there's specific foul water locations. Lake locations can be hard to find, but river are everywhere.

Once in a while, you may encounter a fishing hole that returns only used bait, regardless of anything you try. If you return on a later fishing trip, it may work fine. One thing I have noticed about fishing when you catch 'used bait', be sure to collect it and not just ignore it. If you don't collect it, you catch the same 'used bait' regardless of the type of bait you use, making it very difficult to tell what is the water type. Usually, after you collect used bait and switch to another bait, you will get the right fish ( unless you chose the wrong bait again). Also, in Shadowfen since there are no ocean waters, you get one ocean from each of the other waters, but it is specific, not random. Coelacanth is from foul, Orange Roughy is from lake, Opah is from river. So if you catch all your river fish but don't have an Opah, you need to keep fishing river spots until you do, etc.

I can't decide to give you an awesome or insightful; that might have been my cause - although I could have sworn I accidently collected the "used bait" a couple of times and still had the issue. I will do further investigation.

The biggest problem I have with fishing is that you can't grill em after you catch em. To be honest I'd even be ok with sushi.

I did a thread about bad fishing holes you may want to check. I only have DC and Cyrodil left for my Master Angler, so I have spent a lot of time fishing. You absolutely will run into fishing holes that give only used bait from time to time. Best advice is move on after trying the major bait types with only used bait being returned.

I really would like them to fix that. I'm slowly working on the fishing achievement and I'm just about to roll an alt called Holds-Green-Fish...

Yep, take the Used Bait, even if you just destroy it right away. Otherwise that is all you will get out of the fishing hole.

I've been fishing for about 3 weeks and have only gotten 2 achievements, I'm done fishing but I give you a lot of credit for hanging in there .

I got my Master Angler ten days after I posted this thread. It is definitely a tough achievement. I think you have to be somewhat OCD or crazy to get it . Funny thing is I'm pondering whether to keep fishing....those gunny sacks can have some good loot. I got more than 1 Kuta .

It'd be nice to have an angler shop in the game which sold bait like worms and insect parts, guts and crawlers.

Fishing is driving me insane.
Found an easy place to loot Crawlers and Guts but can't get worms (the cold harbor zombies are farmed by bots)

Its hard to work out what type of fish are from some fishing spots (is it lake, or foul or river) until you fail (use wrong bait)

The best chance of a rare seems to be the first cast, so if you use the wrong bait, your stuffed.

Wish I could buy Shad, Fish Roe, Minnow and Chub cause they seem to increase your chances of a rare fish by 50% vs (Worms, Guts, Insect Parts & Crawlers)

Anyone have some good maps that show what fishing type each node is per map?

The best thing to do for worms is buy them. Search for a trader who sells them for 15g/ea or less. If you can't afford that, start a new alt and relog in the first room where you pick up weapons-approx 200 worms/hr.
You can usually make a good guess on water types, just pay close attention to the first fish you catch and change bait if you are using wrong type. Be sure to collect any used bait on these holes. It seems to be persistent, and if you 'throw it back', you'll catch it over and over.
I've never seen any other statements that first cast is best chance for rare, and that was not my experience. I think that was just your own RNG. The 2ndary baits do not perform better, again, I think that's just your RNG. See this thread http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/129393/fishing-caught-bait-vs-found-bait. My advice is use those baits first just to manage inventory.

One last tip from a Master Angler-I used Custom Pins addon to mark and color code my fishing holes once I had the right water type. This made it a lot easier to go back to those maps to get the fish I was missing from that zone.

Harvestmap has fishing pins. I made mine a nice blue. I don't use already made map markers, I just find them on my own.

Rare Fish Tracker will help so you don't have to keep looking in the Journal. Hotkeyed it numpad*.
