I can understand that there are people who've seen dueling in other games and would like to see a similar feature in ESO.
I don't really think that's it.
Personally, I think it provides a forum for fulfillment of several basic human needs: The need for Significance, Connection, Growth, and Uncertainty. (This is a psyche thing you can look up on the internet if you are keen.)
Dueling provides a way to test your strategies against another player 1 on 1, which is an excellent medium for personal Growth and the further development of your character. The positive reinforcement one achieves by prevailing in such a contest goes a long way to improving their sense of their character's Significance, which along with other meaningful rewards is good for game longevity.
There is also a sense of Connection and mutual respect that comes in the camaraderie of a shared challenge or interest. You can see this when people in world PVP respectfully /wave at each other when they complete a 1 on 1 dual and how others will refrain from jumping in, again out of unspoken RESPECT.
Lastly, the need for Uncertainty. Especially when the only option for PVP in this game at the moment is largely zerg-based and not really about individual strategy (though it has some moments of truly epic siege and group combat, don't get me wrong), having the ability to break up the monotony of questing and crafting and world PVP with a little friend/guild dueling can add a LOT of social value and variety to the overall game environment.
Realistically, so long as they don't allow you to do it in cities or trade areas or where other people need to tal to questgivers, there really isn't any good reason NOT to have it.
Need is a strong word... By no means is dueling a necessity in this game. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a nice feature though.
The clone comments are hilarious... The logic behind saying adding duels would make this a clone suggests this game is already a clone. This game has mounts, just like other MMOs. It has crafting stations, just like other MMOs. It has PvP, just like other MMOs... The key is, how they go about adding it.
From what I recall reading, which was... a while ago I think, they were going to wait until the Justice System came out and see how well that fairs and maybe look into dueling. I think it was rather up in the air so... I don't know if it is something they'd actually go about adding anytime soon.
I haven't read every comment in this thread but I know someone, or a few someones, more or less said that dueling should be limited to certain areas. Such as some form of arena or... something with the Fighter's Guild like someone else mentioned earlier. Perhaps even in the wild, just not in any major cities or villages or anything like that.
Essentially a person will invite you to duel and there will be some time limit for you to accept. Perhaps 30 seconds? I dunno... Then, once it is accepted, there will be a countdown of whatever sort and things commence from there. Once you go to far though from where the duel was initiated, you automatically forfeit.
With that said... players can have an option in settings, probably in gameplay, where they can set it to where they automatically decline duels so they don't have to worry about it at all.
Players taking part in the duel, once the duel start, or during the countdown rather, will automatically lose any outside buffs they received from other players, like molten weapons for instance, and rely solely on their own abilities. They cannot be healed by outside sources save for potions, maybe... I am kinda iffy on potions which leads me to think that they shouldn't be allowed either but... that can be another debate. lol
Rather see something more like a drunken weaponless bar fight mini-game thing, or underground fighters guild arenas, or training areas.
Flat out dueling seems like it would not be acceptable in any of the alliances, since their ongoing goal (besides setting up shop in Cyrodiil) is getting along with each other.
Because its just another outlet for people to cry whine and beg that someone else is better than they are and their skills need nerfed. PVP needs balanced to large scale Cyrodiil, not people bitching and crying about skills and classes due to 1v1 dueling. Sorry, not a fan.
Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough. Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
Disable abilities while holding block. Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil. Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil. Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds. Werewolf is not equal to Vamps/Bats.
There is nothing wrong with a dual option imho. It is just another feature which makes the game richer. Sometimes i just want to dual a guildie or friend to try out new skills. Also for rp-purposes it is fun.
Since it is optional (if you don't want to dual don't accept it) there is nothing wrong with it. It just adds to the game.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."
