PFX Memory & Performance Testing

We briefly discussed one of our efforts to improve combat during our panel at QuakeCon this year—namely a priority- and distance-based culling system that ensures pertinent ability effects are always visible to you and your group so that combat cues are not lost. This system was implemented to improve memory management so that important visual effects are not being culled in high-density combat situations and to improve performance.

For this implementation of the system, you’ll find two new options under Settings -> Video -> Graphics called “Particle Systems” and “Particle Distance.” The Particle Systems slider sets the total number of particle systems shown in the world at any given time based on a priority culling system. Certain effects are never culled, such as those from abilities you and your groupmates cast and those targeting you or your groupmates. Beyond that, there are additional culling rules based on distance and priority. The Particle Distance slider adjusts the distance at which non-critical particle effects are no longer visible. Increasing this distance displays more particles further from you in the world at the expense of performance. Both of these sliders are set to a recommended minimum.

mzce9ma6ejia.png
Survey Questions
  1. Did you see visual effects originating from enemies who killed you?
  2. Did you see all the important effects happening around you?
  3. Did you always see effects from your own abilities?
  4. Are the UI sliders useful to you?
  5. Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?
  6. Does this system improve your overall combat experience?

    Please either:
    1. Add a slider to allow us to never display the orbiting Orb_Of_Inducing_Epilepsy o.O (yes, I have petit mal epilepsy, so this is kind of a big deal to me) from the Inner Light morph of Magelight whether it is cast by me or other players
    2. Remove the orb entirely from the game. This is Inner Light we're talking about, not Blind and Cause Seizures Light.
If there is an issue where you want to show other players in PvP the fact that I have Inner Light running, just increase the strength of the glow effect that is already part of the spell. The orb, at the very least, needs to disappear from my screen whether I cast it or it is cast by other players.

    Thank you.

Somebody checks a LOL on this? Really? This isn't some kind of joke.

I'm politely asking ZOS to remove the orb from Inner Light. This is something that a huge number of players have been asking for a very long time, with no response from ZOS.

If they want me to beg them for it, fine, I'll beg. Please just get rid of the thing or let me turn it off so that it never shows up on my screen whether I cast it or other players did.

    Thank you.

Just to be crystal-clear up front, I absolutely do sympathize for you with your health issue. However, removing spell effects that convey vital gameplay info in PVP for *EVERYONE* arbitrarily on account of what I can only assume is a very very tiny minority of the playerbase statistically is a slippery slope to even try to go down in the first place, let alone the resources needed to start adding individual toggles for abilities. I can't honestly think of any MMO that has done that as it is something that would be a good bit more dev work on an ongoing basis with an overall minimal impact on the playerbase and UI clutter nightmare for the settings screen.

As a stealther in pvp the orb lets me know what players will pop me if I get too close to their path. Additionally as a caster it's a fun aesthetic. As I said, I truly do not mean to minimize or in any way dismiss your concern, as it clearly is a problem for you. However, I do want to raise the rest of the points for the actual impact of the suggestion you're making as it's hardly a cut-and-dry thing like you portray as to how it would affect other players.

If we're going to start talking about wishlist items though, can we get a third-person field of view slider and higher camera zoom distance? :) First-person view got their fov slider, but it was never added for third-person nor was being able to zoom further from your character, center over the character instead of over-the-shoulder-to-the-side, etc. for example.

A toggle to not show the orb to me whether it is cast by me or other players would not impact you in any way whatsoever.

Removing it is simpler for the developers (taking all of a couple of minutes of work to delete the orb), and they could easily compensate by increasing the strength and depth of the character glow from the spell.

    Either method would be fine.

I explained how it does impact me as another player gameplay-wise. And as I said, I sympathize, honestly I do. But I did want to point out they should be careful with what they change.

If you think "delete the orb" takes a couple of minutes on a software project of this scope and complexity, I've got some snake oil to sell, though.

ZOS, we are begging you to get rid of the orb. We have been asking for this for 6 months with no response or any indication that you even care. Now we're down to begging.

I don't care if you let me toggle it off whether I cast it or others did, or you just spend the 5 minutes it takes to remove the orb out right from the game.

I get it. It's broken for you, no one's disputed that or said no accomodation or fix should be made... as I've made extremely overt and detailed pains to mention in my posts because you are clearly upset about the issue and continue to act insulted when no one's said anything against you or your requests/ideas, I do sympathize with your health issue but I don't see why you are not affording any respect to the other end here. Saying things like "people are trying to silence us" is completely unrelated to anything that's been mentioned here and is actually insulting to me as I've been simply trying to talk about it with you.

I have a relative who gets motion sick sometimes because ZOS has yet to add a third-person field of view slider, after playing the game for awhile. I have made constructive feedback about it for months and have not berated other users or acted like she's being slighted for not being able to enjoy the game always without issue because an accessibility feature hasn't been put in yet, even though they did it for first-person users already but have left it out for third-person mode still. Check your attitude, please, is all I ask, when having a discussion. :)

Your gameplay would not be affected. Every spell-based player in the game uses Inner Light as it is a mandatory buff in any event. The orb, as it happens, is a graphic on the wrong morph -- having it on the other morph, specifically designed for pvp, would make sense.

There have been many, many polls over the past 6 months with an overwhelming majority of votes to lose the orb. As long as I don't have to see the thing, I don't care how they get rid of it on my screen.

Personally I'd love a toggle. The minority who want to keep the thing can still see the orb, while the rest of us wouldn't have to. Since we have heard nothing from ZOS on this issue, we're reduced to begging. To avoid headaches, migraines or more serious problems, yeah, I'll beg.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll listen.

@Oberon, we will be making a change to the orb for Inner Light once Package 4 is released. The particle FX and light will be scaled down in both size and intensity so it will be a bit softer and less distracting overall. We hope this helps!

Great :), I hope so too... I just didn't want to see the entire thing nixed since it does convey needed info in pvp at a ready glance. Any word on higher camera zoom distance, camera centering, and/or 3rd-person field of view (as outlined here most recently a few months ago: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/108058/good-first-person-is-getting-some-help-but-what-about-third-person-we-ve-needed-fixes-too )?
-Allow us to zoom further away from behind the character while in 3rd-person view. I can barely see more than several feet to my sides, and a few feet behind me. This is completely inadequate for PVP and for boss fights where the boss is taller than my screen at this point. We actually used to be able to zoom out further in beta but they randomly (and without patch note or explanation) limited it to about 2/3 of that at some point. Even that was already borderline before, but now it is and has been way too close in for many game situations or players' preferences.

-Allow us to choose to center the camera on us or slightly above us instead of having it in an over-the-shoulder off-to-the-right position. Having the off-center camera feels completely wrong while running around in terms of the motion, is unintuitive for targeting, and causes motion sickness/makes the game hard to play due to that, for some people.

While for me it's a gameplay annoyance, I also have a relative who has been able to only play a little because she gets motion sick being so tightly in on her character while other MMO's have allowed her to zoom out enough that she's 100% fine with them. :(

-Allow us to adjust FOV for the third-person camera just as we can for the first-person one now. This shouldn't need any explanation, first-person mode has it, why can't we in third-person now? The constricted FOV feels awkward to me and impedes my enjoyment of the game just as I'm sure it did for first-person users.

These are all very much-needed changes that have been asked for just as long as FOV for first-person was and alongside them in the very same threads, so I am disappointed to see that they didn't touch third-person's problems here especially when one of them was shared directly with first-person view even and got fixed for that. I hope we can see a devpost addressing these needs.

Just to head off a few things in advance, NO there are no addons that allow for any of this functionality, NO there is no option in-game for it now, and NO, the fan-made closed-source esoLauncher executable doesn't provide this functionality nor is it particularly safe to use as it's basically what amounts to a third-party hack tool and has potential security risks associated (or could stop being supported any day the author decides to). These are important in-game options to have as I touched on above.

I've submitted feedback about this for close to a year at this point here and in other channels, and while I'm glad to see other people's issues addressed that are important to them too, I am to say the least a tad frustrated that motion sickness-inducing problems like those for example are seemingly ignored for that length of time yet within a couple of days of posting items like this are addressed. I appreciate your time reading and would be very much appreciative for a status update from the team as the last word as of pre-quakecon was that it wasn't something on the radar.

Ditto. I try not to be hyperbolic and threaten quitting, rage, or other random acts over problems with the game that affect me because at the end of the day it's a game and the devs are doing their jobs as best they can, but that seems to be what gets the grease for squeaky wheels :(. Haha, good catch, I honestly didn't even notice!

Client crashed once. Submitted a bug report. Was really frustrated with the design of the test. If this really was a PFX test why not just have massive zerg battles in a field with a ton of forward camps so we can continuously respawn and keep the particle effects up? It's really frustrating hoofing it back to the battle on an amazingly slow horse without retreating maneuvers. Just an idea.

I did not notice any difference to effects. I had settings set up pretty high. Doh.

I did crash once and that is uncommon for me.

*Did you see visual effects originating from enemies who killed you?

    Yes

*Did you see all the important effects happening around you?

    Lots of effects, yes.

*Did you always see effects from your own abilities?

    Not all the time.

*Are the UI sliders useful to you?

    Yes

*Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?

    Probably.

*Does this system improve your overall combat experience?

I'm not sure. My game crashed many times and I experienced a random loading screen. I'm not sure if this was due to problems on my side, or the game/test itself though.

    Yes

    3. Did you always see effects from your own abilities?

    4. Are the UI sliders useful to you?
Left them at minimum for PvP, but will probably set them higher for PvE

    5. Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?
Yes, player effects a bit (for PvP). Would like as well to decrease particle details for enviroment generated animations like fire, fog and other effects (?) in general as these seem to take more of a toll on my system than player generated effects.

    6. Does this system improve your overall combat experience?
    Yes, went pretty smoothly.

Did you see visual effects originating from enemies who killed you?

For the most part yes. Where I was able to pay attention to it, I don't think I saw anything missing that affected me.

Did you see all the important effects happening around you?

    Again, I believe so.

Did you always see effects from your own abilities?

The skills I normally used all seemed to be working as they should. Repentance, morph of restoring aura, I could see the area cast, and the green stream of energy from dead enemies to myself. But beyond that, I didn't see any indication of its effect beyond seeing health bars go up.

At one point my shield and mace disappeared. My arm positions were unaffected and I could see the glow coming off the invisible weapons. Swapping to my staff showed my staff, but didn't fix the mace/shield visual. It corrected itself a short time later.

Are the UI sliders useful to you?

They might be, I don't really know enough about what I'm adjusting. I set Particle Systems to moderate low (~1300) on the slider and Particle Distance to ~75 because I wasn't sure how much it would tax my machine. I didn't adjust them beyond that. GTX 570, graphics on Ultra default, I didn't notice any visual lag. (I also noticed that the sliders have reset to default so who knows what I was running at.)

Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?

I didn't see a need to reduce them any further.

Does this system improve your overall combat experience?

Combat experience was excellent. It's hard to say if the system improved the experience, it certainly did not hamper it.

(I should also mention that last night on Live I had a couple crashes of my display driver in a row in Cyrodiil where I just had to quit because the game wouldn't let me play. Before this test I updated my video driver and things went smoothly.)

    Niveau fun, on pouvait oublier.

    1. Did you see visual effects originating from enemies who killed you?
    Yes

    2. Did you see all the important effects happening around you?
I believe so but I was attacked from behind or while operating siege equipment so I did not see the effects because the enemies out of my line of sight.

    3. Did you always see effects from your own abilities?
    Almost always.

    4. Are the UI sliders useful to you?
I will probably never use them as I usually never tamper with the Controls or Settings apart from hiding my helmet and changing a couple of key binds.

    5. Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?
    No opinion here.

    6. Does this system improve your overall combat experience?
Combat certainly seem improved as I could discern specific skills and effects from a further distance than I previously could.

    1. Did you see visual effects originating from enemies who killed you?
I guess so. I didn't die too much, and when I did it was pretty fast. But I saw that bad things were hitting me.

    2. Did you see all the important effects happening around you?
Well, mostly there were a great lot of overlapping, rapidly growing red circles beneath my feet, and it was all I could do to GTFO of them.

    3. Did you always see effects from your own abilities?
I guess so. I was healing most of the time. There sure was a whole lot of healing in our ranks (which might or might not explain why we've won). ^_^

    4. Are the UI sliders useful to you?
I had them in the middle (systems), and on the left (distance). I guess I should've played around with them a little more, but I was kinda distracted because ZERG!

    5. Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?
I wouldn't mind if there was a bit less visual clutter, but that's just me. It's also very exciting and atmospheric when a lot of things are going on simultaneously. So don't tip the scales too much in one direction. ;)

    6. Does this system improve your overall combat experience?
All in all I had a very fun, fluid, and seamless experience. Thank you!

left it at default didn't mess with it. But like them anyways

Would you like to be able to reduce the “Particle Systems” or “Particle Density” further than the current minimum setting?

Probably, just to see if it helps even more

Does this system improve your overall combat experience?
A bit yes, however during the test, when what appeared to be 50 or more dc rushing through our 20-25 EP or so, I dc'd twice from the game. Screen froze, kicked me back to the login in screen. Don't know if lowering the particle systems and density further, if I could have, would've helped at all. I run everything on the highest setting normally on live. Sometimes everything goes good in big battles, sometimes not. It has slowly gotten better over time, so maybe those settings will help it be a bit better on live. As far as my system goes, just built it 2-3 months ago, put a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, I7 4770k and 16gb of RAM in it, so should be able to handle it all.
