Yeah, but the reaction would be about the same, or worse, and might even get the entire game banned in some weirdo countries if killable children were added. Which, as you point out, doesn't make sense because they're pixels. Weirdo countries includes my own - it's still on the books that crime comics are illegal here, you know. Cops just turn a blind eye to Batman's shenanigans; I think the RCMP have better things to worry about than him.

There used to be a show called "The Border", about Canadian Border Services (it was less boring than it sounds, actually, and I'm no fan of my own country's TV fare.) One episode featured a self-controlled *** (can't believe this word is censored; it's a bad person who interferes with children.) - oh, he had been arrested all right, but all his pictures of kids were not real; they were just digital images he had made up for his own pleasure, and he even said that he had no intention of harming real kids, and wanted nothing to do with real porno. That sort of thing DOES fall into a legal grey area here (and as the story went, they needed this guy to track down a really dangerous sicko.) I think that show presented a very good point - while I think the guy was a sicko, he wasn't actually harming anyone or anything, so I can't really say that anything ought to be done against him.

The harming of RL children and animals needs punishment, yes; but I don't agree that video games _encourage_ this stuff - in fact, it's healthy to have a fantastical outlet for certain bad things that doesn't hurt anyone. In Skyrim, I made an active thing of deer hunting for large antlers, though I'd never do it in real life (don't like venison anyway - and I have all kinds of access to domestically-raised beef, I don't need wild meat.) Yes, it is gratifying to boot the snottier kids in Skyrim with mods. You can't do anything to a kid who snots off at you IRL - better to get your revenge/satisfaction through a video game than actually kicking a real kid in the behind (no matter how much the kid might need it.)

However, I can understand that cats and dogs are protected in ESO, just as kids are protected by default in Skyrim. Why open cans of worms that don't need to be opened? And in this Brave New Orwellian PC World, well, you're best off erring on the side of caution if you care about the skin on your butt.

And I dont know if anyone told you this but cats and dogs will never ever be looked at as equalls regarding just about anything IRL. Just saying. They are not people, they are something humans buy and own.
If games should cater to every induvidual that cant stand the thought of their favorite animal can get killed there wouldnt be much of a game left.

I do not see the difference between digital children and digital animals. If dogs and cats are made killable, then WHY NOT kids? They're equal in that they're not real, they're just pixels - and all pixels are created equal.

Hah. I used to have a Siamese cat who was a very large female, 25 lbs of muscle, she was. Had a psychotic hatred of dogs. I didn't have the heart to fess up why the dog didn't like me (he could surely smell his would-be killer on my clothes); I chose instead to take the "indulgent" route, and excused myself as quickly as politely possible.

That Siamese would attack ANY dog, no matter how big. I've seen her chase more than one large dog down the street, much to my dismay (they were dogs I knew to be pretty harmless and friendly.)

Plenty of us perceive them as equals. I value animals on the same level as people and am not alone. I will kill animals or people in a fantasy game, however, because it is fantasy.

I've eaten scorpion and grasshopper. Both are not super good - pretty sure the grasshopper were prepared properly, but the scorpion was pickled. It was salty and gross.

I've had mountain lion - does that count as cat? It was quite a bit better than the bugs, trust me.

And all over the world except in NA, people eat dogs. Not house cats usually though.

people eat cats, I saw something about them being boiled alive. Very brutal, not much different than slaughterhouses in the US though. It's all terrible stuff.

you could say that about children as well. Domesticated animals exist alongside humans and their needs and abilities are intertwined. They would not fare well in the wild. That does not mean they should not have rights.

It's not a matter of just awaiting the day either, one must be proactive about such things. Be it via time, money, diet, etc. Even just adopting a rescue animal and treating it with love and dignity is a step in the right direction.

We can't entirely control what the people around us do and that means that things will never be the way they should be, but we can control our own actions, as well as the way we respond to what happens around us.

I think this is an interesting debate, even if its off topic. I found my cat with 3 litter mates abandoned and half dead in a box in a dumpster. I think I did the right thing. Would they have been happier given the chance to survive or die left to the natural order of things? She seems pretty happy, but maybe shed be way more fulfilled being a feral alley cat chasing rats and eating garbage? I have no idea how to quantify animal happiness, ill never know. Except for industrial livestock farms. Im pretty sure theyre in torment. Its also pretty likely that id be alot happier living off my wits as a hunter in a tribal villiage. Stupid stone-bronze age transition. No one asked ME whether or not i wanted to stop being a cave man. Maybe the constant threat of of being eaten by sabertooths would add a spice to life we can never imagine the excitement of.

Yeah and that is wrong, right? Only chance an animal have in regards to being equals to man is if we stop having them as pets and let them be wild and free.
While I agree one shouldnt stop trying making the world a better place I will eagerly await the day animals will be seen and treated as equals to man in any country in the world.

you could say that about children as well. Domesticated animals exist alongside humans and their needs and abilities are intertwined. They would not fare well in the wild. That does not mean they should not have rights.

It's not a matter of just awaiting the day either, one must be proactive about such things. Be it via time, money, diet, etc. Even just adopting a rescue animal and treating it with love and dignity is a step in the right direction.

We can't entirely control what the people around us do and that means that things will never be the way they should be, but we can control our own actions, as well as the way we respond to what happens around us.

Anyway, this is way off topic. Let me kill pets AND children in game, since I go out of my way to be good to other living creatures outside of the game.

Never said animals doesnt have or shouldnt have rights, just that they are not equal to man. And thats how it is, even so if some individuals treat them like equals.

why? It's the same thing, only you value kids more, I value animals more. However we should be able to kill it all. And if not, rats need to become invincible, because they are wonderful creatures.

but it is relevant to me because I don't want cats to be killable unless there are killable children. It's a package deal.

I guess I agree with both sides of this to varying degrees. In the interest of making everyone happy, I think all combat and violence should be removed. It will be replaced with a dialogue system, and we'll talk out our differences with a lengthy menu of conversational options. Just wait till you see the difficulty level of arguments with the undead! Well no, it is fact i´d say but it might be possible we dont share worlds tho. But please point me out to the country or part of the world where this man & animal equal state of status can be found. Except the little piece of land your garden might be on tho.
I dont see how this discussion can evolve much further and stay somewhat constructive but for the sake of goodwill; if we are going to such extremes with things, even the trees and every single straw of grass should be treated as equals and respected and not stepped upon since it share the same life force as us and thus we should stop consume and use it as we see fit and tra la la etc. The world doesnt work like that... You all know it too.

And to the guy who found his cats in a dumpster: You see, you most probably the right thing(moraly anyway) since they would most likely be dead without a mother to feed them (unless they where fully grown when you found them), but it was by choice of a human they ended up in that dumpster in the first place. Cat & dogs and other domesticated animals are human possessions and sorry to say we have a tendency to do what please us as often as we can. And sometimes animals picks the short straw and hafto go for what ever reasons.
I wont go into a debate about happiness, since my wife might tell me she is happy but i will never know, I can only trust her words and trust in my gut feeling about if its the truth or not. its very abstract stuff.

I don't entirely know what you are implying by the bolded but I suspect that it speaks more about you personally than it does about the potential inferiority or equality of animals to people.

Yeah you keep saying that and I do not agree with you. Women are in many ways treated as inferior to men and humanity has a long way to go before reaching that equilbrium for equal rights etc, i doubt animals will reach that in the next thousand years really if man is still around on this planet.

you are confusing your points. You are saying on one hand that animals are factually inferior to humans, and on another hand that they are treated as such and that that will eventually improve. I am saying that animals are not factually inferior to humans regardless of societal perception or treatment, the same as any human. Just because society treats an individual, human or animal, as inferior, as property, as a tool for their amusement, whatever, does not mean that creature is in fact inferior. It means they are under the yoke of an oppressor. The oppressor is not in the right just because he happens to be in a society that approves of or condones his actions.

If you call me a dog your intent is to be insulting. So I will take it as an insult. There are situations in which you could call me a dog, and it would not be insulting. As with all things it is relative to context. We use dog or b-tch as a derogatory term, therefore, it is irrelevant whether I actually percieve dogs as inferior or "bad".
