Making RP in ESO Even Better- Lootable NPC Clothing- UPDATE! NOW ON PTS, THANK YOU ZENI

Update 1/28/2015: And lootable NPC clothing is now live on the private testing server. Thanks to all those who supported this, and a huge thank you to ZeniMax Online and the teams who made this possible.

I spend most of my ESO playing time either role playing or looking for crafting mats so that I can make new interesting outfit combinations. I love the variety in the armor styles between races (and even levels within a same style), but there is only one thing I wish we could do...

Have a way to obtain the clothing that the NPCs wear.

Above: Beautiful Dunmer in beautiful clothing that I must have.

There are some really great pieces of clothing that I wish I could get my hands on. In fact, I would sink pretty low to get that little white servant hat. I would sneak into a house and raid their wardrobes, perhaps threaten an innocent for it. Maybe even kill. *Dramatic Thunder Clap*

So that got me thinking. Right now your regular loot run through houses look something like this:
  • Food & Drinks
  • Cooking Ingredients
  • Crafting Style Material
  • Lockpicks
  • Motifs
  • Weapons
  • Armor
Motifs give you a pretty good reason to loot, but besides that and certain provisional ingredients, everything else you find can be made or bought.

With the upcoming justice system, I say there should be a little more of a bonus for those with sneaky inclinations. It would be the perfect time to introduce looting clothing off of your victims, or actually pulling a new dress out of that nightstand instead of Coagulated Kawa Quiche.

And imagine further if each item on the NPCs were individually able to be looted, so they are less like costumes, but rather could be equipped into an armor slot so you could mix and match. My inventory slots are weeping at the very thought of it, but they are happy tears. (Unless ZOS was to be really nice and add a new tab that doesn't count them towards your inventory slots? )

tumblr_n9kxel0V6z1twq6q7o1_1280.png
A shirt? In my night stand? It's more likely than you'd think!

This would all be of course just for the sake of immersions and less about being a potential source of income. The clothing could have a value of 0 gold, just as the recently added weapon and armor does, and have no combat stats. They would be purely for ascetics, and make us role players and long time TES fans really, really, happy.

And if it isn't too much more to ask... making them dye-able?

Suggestions and Discussion are Welcome!

I would like to see this! I would also like to see Clothiers able to craft such non-armor clothing. It would add a fun element to the game, I think. Of course, I'd also like to see the ability to create costumes so that you could wear armor under your chosen clothes, but that might be asking too much. :P

I think this idea is awesome! I'd love to see some more clothing added in as actual items and not costumes!

I would loooove to see the costume slot expanded into something a little bit like LotRO's. Be able to put any item in there to retain the appearance, and be able to mix and match with a variety, including armor in game.

I want this so much. I want to look like a normal person not a walking pile of bits of metal. I am just a wandering cook and scavenger trying to get together enough coin for the next bank upgrade. Same as every other merchant, smuggler, barkeep, cook, fisherman and beggar in Tamriel.

I have a suspicion they're disguises, not individual outfit pieces. Which might be preferable, even though we couldn't mix and match.

Yeaaaah....with the upcoming justice system...I'm speccing OUT of provisioning, simply because most mats are found in towns and looting them would be theft.

Since I have no desire at all to engage in PvP(I haven't set foot in Cyrodiil ever, and been playing since early access) it seems I'll have to spec out of a skill line that mainly gathers its components in towns.

I'd have to call this a bad idea, personally. Anything that might involve people in PvP if they don't want to is a bad idea.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

This is the one of the best threads and posts I've seen in these forums. Thank you GreenTea for the extremely delicious, concise and well-constructed meal in the form of perfect text and images.

"Beautiful Dunmer" You're great, GreenTea gets it. The beauty of Dunmer is absolute.

Suggestion: A special section in Blacksmithing, Clothing and Woodworking.

    Costumes

Unlocked through achievements, not to difficult to obtain. Players are able to craft costumes such as common clothes, noble clothes and so on. Through Woodworking players are even able to craft Rakes, Shovels, Rolling Pins and the like whilst through Blacksmithing players may craft Kitchen Knives, Meat Cleavers, those sharpener things you see NPC's sharpening their weapons with etc.

Rift does this as well. You can wear any armor or clothing (that you can normally wear) in the costume panel that has zero stats but you can dye it and it doesn't disappear when you fight.

So I could wear a hodgepodge of items (like some cloth top and a leather pants) and that would show instead of my armor. If I leave the space empty in the costume panel then the regular armor I wear will show as usual.

Costumes can be worn in these panels also so you can have those if you want instead.

I really like the look of the Wyress light armour. Alas it is about level 7 so I get about an hours worth of use out of it if I am lucky. A "convert to disguise" option for armour you really like the look of would be handy. Maybe make it something only a clothier of a certain level can do?

This is a great and very reasonable idea, as the art assets are already in game but are currently under utilized due to their unavailability to players. Opening up these non-combat oriented clothes to players would be reminiscent to past Elder Scrolls games where you can wear regular clothing if you so desired for whatever reason, thus making ESO seem like a slightly fuller and more complete experience not just to the RPer demographic but also to the average video game player.

Adding NPC clothing as lootable items found in nightstands and what not makes them more unique and desirable items than the lootable equipment presented now, which many players have deemed a hassle to deal with since they're regular armor and weapons without monetary value, traits, or noticeable aesthetic differences. The loot aspect is improved with this idea you can find something that looks unique, and this effectively raises a player's excitement when callously pillaging someone's house.

The in-game assets are already there as well as the system, so it should be easy to implement in comparison to other player suggestions of making totally new items or adding in a new UI or gameplay system. It would further bridge the gap between this MMO and the popular Elder Scroll main series, and give flavor and improve the ever shouted "immersion" aspect for ESO.

So yep, sure would be cool if this idea was implemented.

Just FYI, it's only theft when you sneak, if you're walking about it's not theft. There will still be items you can loot, the stolen ones will actually have value though and can be sold to a fence.

Also any chance that anyone from ZOS would pass it to the appropriate people and have this idea considered at the very least?

Yeah I like the sound of this but I ask what type of NPCs could be made lootable. Killing an npc then looting their clothes makes sense but what about friendly NPCs. If you sneak loot their clothes would that not make them naked then how would they appear to other players. Sounds like a good idea but may be hard to incorporate into an mmo.

I want this so badly. Initially I wished these clothes would be craftable, but your idea of actually having to find them in the cities and living areas is even better. Maybe even combine the two, so if you deconstruct it, you learn how to craft it?

Well I would like to play a bounty hunter, and I suppose fashion-crazed women who plunder wardrobes would be considered thieves based on the new justice system, so yes I'd get behind this. Your vanity and kleptomania, my profit.
