Whats wrong with gamers today??

those operating a subscription model need to put a lot of thought into creating loyalty, game companies need to let us know they appreciate that we pay them a certain amount of money each month rather than throw that money into a F2P cash shop

I agree. A subscription raises expectations, particularly as some companies go pretty far with loyalty rewards and the like. Rift, for example, is edging closer to handing out free pizzas and foot massage for 'patrons.' They have an excellent model of a loyalty program.

The industry has changed and people have just sort of accepted it. There are those of us who remember a golden age when our subscription included everything, sure.

Promotional stuff has never been on our Subs Laura, I play since Ultima and don't recall an MMO that gave me stuff from Blizzcon, Quake Con or some other event only because I was subbed.

I bought an MMO long time ago and I got two t shirts as a gift. I did so because of the promo, not because of the sub which I didn't even paid at this time :D

I am with you if we talk about SWTOR, GW2 or LOTRO - but ESO is absolutely none of these games. Its fair and we have access to everything!

I wonder how you would act if you play SWTOR and need to pay 5 bucks for a simple action bar or 10 bucks at GW2 so that you can pvp. ;)

Nothing is wrong and nothing has changed.

Now the Internet forums and social media have finally given customers a voice. Voices and opinions that are unfiltered.

Today you're seeing what was hidden behind filters and marketing campaigns.

Nothing's is wrong but perhaps the reality of people is just as scary to you as it was to companies who fight to silence the voices and opinions of others.

    Oh please.

I'd love to see the forums for Sonic the Hedgehog:

    "OMG, nerf Caterkillers!"
"Why are Steam users getting a Tails vanity pet?!"
"6 hours to get all the emeralds, and now I die on the final boss?! I want a refund!"

See, back in the day, we didn't whine about these things. We actually enjoyed playing games.

I'm probably a lot older than you.
Judging from your response to my comment you don't spend much time outside of your normal circles.

People have always reacted and behaved this way. My circles change every month drastically due to my professions and my wife's professions but adding in chosen social circles and adding new social circles allow you to hear and experience many different points if view.

My personality and your personality could be similar but our environment, experiences and social circles matched with culture will produce a mixture of actions and reactions in given circumstances.

These forums allow ages 5-100 years of age to type almost anything.
    What you see are people

Child rearing and morals do play a part just as much as cause and effect.

The same applies to the company who manages and develops this game.

When something is created for entertainment and intentionally adds social media, forums, podcasts, Video broadcasting, etc. it's all for the soap opera.

THIS is by design the intended result of the business plan.

Some will stay around for the drama, others for information and even groups within those that play the game.

It's a pay for entertainment model.

No different than watching a TV show and then texting, tweeting and posting about the show and voting for diff items.

I have to agree. A lot of gamers are spoiled nowadays. Also don't forget when we were younger and had games they were often single player and we had no internet access. So we always thought we were on our own and kept our mouth shut.
Nowadays it is so easy to start a *** on almost everything. It makes it so easy for people to complain because they know they are not alone.

I can see your argument, but I disagree. No bad feelings towards you, I just find the differentiation between pieces of code to be a little artificial and just used as a means to hold a shiny above peoples' heads in a cheap attempt to ring in profit.

You don't have to agree with me on that, but I do hope that you respect that opinion.

Well you were all about pointing out how people are different. I said I understand that. I just think that these ones are pathetically different. What's wrong with gamers?
    • An inability to understand that other people have different opinions, sometimes strong ones
    • An odd sense of violation and rage when confronted with things they don't understand, such as people with different opinions
    • A strong urge to post angry rants directed at strawman opponents, usually with all-caps fake quotes
    • An assumption that they're clearly more mature than those anonymous others out there, the ones with a different opinion
Empathy and the internet don't mix very well.

Surprisingly, people have opinions about opinions. Now, follow me here:

Some people... wait for it... some people find a vanity pet to be a pointless thing to devote your time to whining about, especially when there are far more important features that need debate. Every problem is not equal. There are people here who have thought that the delete character limit was a serious issue. There is absolutely no problem with the halfway-rational people on the forum (those of us that are left) rising up and saying, "That's not as big an issue as you are making it out to be. Stop complaining about things that don't matter, because eventually ZO will stop listening to the forums if they see it as a place for overly sensitive players to whine about perceived insults to their loyalty."

Having fierce opinions about other peoples' opinions is not a mark of rationality, it is the mark of a surplus of free time and the desire to have a reason, any reason at all, to argue with people and call them wrong.

There have been maybe 3 threads today that were worth actual discussion. Can you think of why that might be? Can you imagine any earthly reason that so few useful threads were posted/noticed today?

People hijacking the forums for waves of petty complaint threads ruin the overall quality of discussion. Some of us like discussion.

These forums are not your personal forums. You are in no position whatsoever to say what's "hijacking" them. Nor are you in any position to dictate what's "worth actual" discussion.

If there were a billion threads on the topic, it would show that other people are invested in talking about a thing. Rather than pushing your face in to get all angsty about it, telling people what's "worth" talking about and what's not, how about some exercise on that scroll wheel there, pard'ner?

I mean, it's clear you like discussion when it's what you want to discuss, so why such a big aggressive frowny-face when people talk about what they want to talk about?

I'm not sure why this is a hard concept to grasp.

This was a non-issue. But enough people have figured out that whining loud enough gets them noticed. Which is not behavior I'm willing to endorse.

You feel differently. Thank you for expressing your opinion on the subject.

Nobody, not other players, not Zenimax, not the PR people, cares if you endorse anything or not.

What you need to "grasp," and it really does seem to be a hard concept to you, is this:

Not all communication is meant for you. What you're seeing is other people, in the act of expressing their wants, their hopes, and their desires. If you are not invested, then the adult thing to do is move on.

There's this party, you see? And people are all over the place, doing party things--nibbling from a long table that has food on it, some are in the pool, most are just kind of hanging out, bumping into other people and making chit-chat.

But there's this GUY. Every time he glides by a conversation, even one he's not even in, overhears a snippet and HAS to get his word in. "WHAT, NO, JAIME LANNISTER IS A JERK, HE DESERVES WHAT HE GETS." And then the guy moves on to ruin the next conversation ("UGH, IRON MAN 3 IS A TRAVESTY, RUINED THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE"), leaving in his wake a bunch of people who were having a good time, but are now experiencing a slightly lessened sense of enjoyment.

    Good post.

There are plenty of people who believe everyone else is just an extra in the movie about their life. Thus the bewilderment and anger when those bit players do something confusing, like... caring about things, odd things, things that the main character doesn't.

I like how there's a group of people who just can't see why that dog is so important as to have such a massive thread.

It's extremely funny as they try to distinguish themselves by calling others whiners and having behavioural issues or even a kid's mentality.

    Look, this is a GAME.

We all paid our cash to purchase something virtual, made out of 0 and 1. The dog is no different to health or magicka. It's all by core virtual, fake, something creating out of numbers and pixels to amuse us.

Whether you're a min-max guy who doesn't care for the dog, or vice versa, you're still a gamer. And by being a gamer, you've spent countless hours on things that are irrelevant to the real world.

That being said, this dog is a part of the product, considered as a content even if it does not do anything whatsoever. There's a reason why cosmetic virtual products could be monetised, reason being is that there is a demand.

Should you utilise your logic bestowed by the divines, this thread is the uproar of that demand. The gaming industry grows exponentially because people demand for virtual cosmetics and virtual features deemed useless by min-maxers.

This is the reason why games could survive better as F2P with microtrans. This is why the Sims is one of the top franchise of all times, and the dog? Nobody ever knows why pokemon, tamatgotchi, digimon, nintendogs, and all the pet games out there are so successful.

The truth is, virtual pets is a serious business. Prepare to receive a massive thread of questioning when not handled well.

You are not the only person playing the game, all these people on the forums are playing too. This community and more is their target market, if only one person is unhappy, they still have to collect that feedback and act upon it.

Complaints equal unsatisfied demands. Lamborghini is the perfect living example of how big of an unsatisfied demand a single complaint could be, should Ferrari have listened and acted upon that complaint, they would have been twice their size now without this competitor.

If you are still pissed off at the people wanting the dog, let me tell you this.

The RPG hardcore community that spawned Morrowind's success has yet been satisfied by the ESO. They were unhappy about TES4 and TES5, and only a growing MMO product would have the capacity to morph into what they want. I won't be surprised to see every character having more than a minimal of 5 dialogue options as the game enters maturity.

I am not a hardcore gamer so the fluff is just fluff in a way. The issue I have with Steam customers getting the dog is for my pre-order imperial I got the Monkey, the Guar and 2 (should have worn a condom) crabs. They couldn't even think of a different pet to make for the launch. They had so many other options to make a vanity pet, they didn't need to make 2 of the same. A different color of a crab isn't really a different vanity pet in my opinion.

There is not a damn thing wrong with me for wanting the option to BUY the same dog as a stand-alone that I have no problem with new people getting for free. Thanks for your concern though.

Oh, these whiners want it for free. As soon as ZOS says they are going to charge $4.99 for it, expect the whine-fest to start anew. I guarantee it.

If ZOS were my business to run, and I had just finished reading this thread and hte other like it, I would telling my developers that their top priority is to get that puppy in the cash shop for no less than $24.99. Then I would tell everyone to be thankfuol that it is still cheaper than a steam key.
