STEAM -- TESO? today's topic

So an announcement was made or a leak that Steam users now have access to TESO.
On social media sites people have all types of opinions and responses but I'm curious. Is this just another way to get access to the game or as some suggest, when MMORPG games go to Steam, the pricing model is subject to change?

Just a conversation topic for today...

Steam recently gave sale pricing control to the publishers, but I don't know if that would prevent Steam from putting a sale up themselves.

Usually (though not always) when Steam has sales on the big titles anyone else that sells it digitally will throw it up on sale also.

I don't see it as a big deal and may even help subs. I have not yet seen the game appear on Steam though.

Not sure why it matters in this instance as they will still sell it through their own page also.

Some comments have been made that FTP is on the horizon with this change.

How many subscription based MMORPGs are on Steam today?
(I think there is less than 4) and those may just be an upfront cost only.

From what I read, it is just another avenue for sales of the game. It does not sound like anyone would be playing the game through Steam.

So, if this gets us more players, then I am all for it.

They are perfectly allowed to add the game to Steam without the threat of F2P looming. The F2P doomsayers are really starting to grate.

They have no plans to change from the current subscription model. Deal with it. Either pay your sub fee and play or please stop complaining about there being a sub fee and go play an actual F2P MMO.

personally I prefer it non-steam, as steam just adds another, ( add filled) layer to the experience.

the steam client is just another bugfest to add to the pile. Currently ESO don't have to code for anybody else's framework

I hope they don't go steam

Quick question, if I downloaded and played through the steam version, would it have any effect in my addons? I prefer steam personally just because everything is then in one place.

No idea, the add on devs would need to consider steam requirements, but I doubt that too bad.

Since the Addons are in a folder in Documents, then probably not. I can't see why the game being installed in a Steam Library would matter. And, your not playing through Steam, just installing it with Steam. You will still be connecting to the ZOS servers.

Which makes me wonder if you would even have to launch Steam as the game is authorized through ZOS when you log in.

You can have the eso patcher do them automatically already anyway. Look in the options :).

They probably just contracted with Steam to handle some downloads and sell time cards. It doesn't mean its going to be a Steam-dependent game.

My only question is: Will I easily be able to enter a key or something into Steam to have it recognize that I already own the game instead of having to purchase it again through Steam to get it to show up in my game library?

I dont really have a preference, all my games are on Steam except ESO, and since launch, I haven't once played a Steam game, ESO has kept me occupied since day 1.

However, it would be handy to be able to import into Steam, as I have friends (and remote family) who message me there, and I would have the benefit of seeing the pop ups in game, though it is hardly a major issue, but that's the only reason I would import it into Steam if it ever became possible

You could add the current directory as a Library to Steam. (that might require you to pay Steam for the game if you want Steam to launch the ESO Launcher) But, at least you would not have to download the game again.

You could also try and add the game as a Non Steam Game to Steam. In fact, you could try that right now and see what happens if you want to launch the game through Steam.

In my experience, when MMO games with their own patcher go to steam they often keep their patcher and don't use steam for updates. Steam just starts the patcher and then the patcher is responsible for updates. They do this because Steam is not the sole platform and they still need to support non-steam version.

Of course they say they have 'no plans' and they'd 'rather switch the servers off'. What would you expect them to say?

I'd bet that this $200,000,000 investment has Plans A-E and at least one of them is marked 'FTP' even if all it consists of is 'sell IP to highest bidder so investors get some of their money back'.

While I want ESO to continue to be a premium sub game, FTP (especially if it's the popular FTP/Sub hybrid) wouldn't be the end of the world. Rift and SWTOR are still very good games.

Star Trek Online is even better since being sold to Perfect World.

People need to remember that the MMO customer base isn't just nerds in basements. It's a wide range of people and includes people who have no issue with paying for their entertainment.

If Perfect World bought ESO and developed it like they did and do STO it'd probably do great. I really like the way you can have a great time playing solo and any advantage you buy in the form of better starships is mostly just helping you and your fleet do better in the wide-ranging PvE content.

And i really like that you can play STO without spending a dime and still have a great time.

Like I said - I would prefer ESO succeed as a premium sub but if it went FTP in the STO or SWTOR way rather than the mean-spirited chiselling LOTRO way (where gameplay was monetised at every turn and next to nothing was reinvested in anything but lazy cookie cutter new content that they then charged you top dollar for anyway) then it could be a glorious new chapter.

I really did not like Steam initially. They have greatly improved their product in recent years though and I now have several dozen games in their inventory. It is meaningless what sales they may have as well. I bought ESO from Green Man Gaming pre launch for 25% off. That has nothing to do with the subscription model.

I think ESO going to steam is a great thing, more publicity. As for this looming to ESO being f2p, why worry about it now we have console versions coming soon, possibly steam, it will be over a year before this even becomes a current question and no one knows what state the game will be in by then.

Putting it on Steam does nothing more than open up digital downloads to a larger audience. It also allows them to have random sales for cheaper to get more people into the game. So instead of now having to go Zenimaxs store or go buy a physical copy people will see it on steam. It's advertisement and makes it easier to buy.

Yes, anything that brings more people to participate in the Cyrodiil campaigns is great news.

The social sharing features are also helpful. When people on our Steam friends list see videos and screenshots we share, some may be more interested to try the game.
