Sometimes in zone chat, talks can be heated (just like the forums), if topic go to name calling and to much cursing, I will say that is not needed and we need to talk with each other and naming calling is over the line.

Why is it always 12 year olds get the blame?

but, alas no. You will never get rid of Toxic, Racist, & Abusive Gamers. Is is up to each player to not let it bother you and if someone really crosses the line report them.

No we can't stop it. We can reduce it by immediately identifying these people by their behaviors and ostracizing them. We can ignore them, which means they are denied access to our groups. We can check our guild lists to ensure no ignored players can get in or already are and if so complain to guild leader.

We can counter their rapport by targeting instead any player who falls for the bait with a whisper and trying to persuade them to use the ignore feature and stop interacting with the person.

You can refuse to tolerate and accept such behavior. Warn the troll that their behavior is creating a toxic environment and report them. If they say something bad, roll up to the text and report it with a screenshot and in your report.

Focus not on your displeasure with the person but on the eyesore of it, and on your concern that this may dissuade other players from socializing or participating in a good environment.

ZOS said they wanted players to have a positive environment: This game has one of the worst and has driven the anti-socal behavior we have today that is present in every part of the game, including players not even wanting to trade with one another because they are aggravated at trolls.

    Within; Without.

You might find this article from a recent Wired magazine interesting... and encouraging:

    wired.com/2014/05/fighting-online-harassment/

There's no "silver bullet" for this issue—the only solution is to shape the awareness of the community involved. I don't find it at all surprising that the vast majority of gamers want to have fun in a non-toxic environment.

I every right NOT to hear curse words in a public area. I do not need a 3rd party tool. It is a simple request -- if you feel like you need to curse, one can do it in guild, party or tells. If someone does not like the topic or the tone of the topic that can leave. Zone chat, one can not leave and if they want to do trades, they have to used zone chat.

If someone starts to yell and curse in place like a restaurant, that restaurants has every right to kick out of their building. The zone chat is kind of like a public restaurant.

I have left a guild before because of toxic people and never ending cursing (like every line they say is a cursing). I can not leave a guild called "zone chat"

or you could not use profane talk in public ;) That is not too much ask. One or two profane words do not bug me, but every line (more cases then not leads to sexual talk) do bug me. I will report someone if they act that way.

Words are a series of letters placed together....The only power they have is the power you give them....

Simple solution? Stop seeing letters has abusive tools....F*#% should hold no more power then happy. If you want to stop something the easiest way is to not see it in the first place. Only you have power over your mind...If so easily influenced or swayed into thoughts, perhaps a better look at yourself is all thats needed.

This game has given trolls a strong and powerful reincarnation. But that's probably fed by those who want this to be a single player mmo and aren't used to being in a trollish environment. I agree that those who know what is going on and how to react to such situations must act to raise the awareness to those who can't tell the difference between the trolls and people who are just a-holes or who might actually be upset about something or at someone.

Because as an age group they (adolescents and pre-adolescents) have the most proclivity to broad sweeping mood swings and have yet to master the art of self-control. Thank hormones. Mind you this is a generalization and there will always be those that don't follow the stigma but that's life.

Everyone goes through a pissy preteen stage. It's just become more widely acknowledged because of their ability to access media like online gaming with built-in voice chat. If they popped off at the mouth without anyone ever being able to hear it aside from those physically near them - then the stigma wouldn't exist.

By the by, if at their age, anyone in my family heard me say half the things these little knuckleheads say over voicechat I would've been knocked into next week.

If I make a mature joke which is intended to be funny, it should not get the same consequences as if I were to attack a person with racial or threatening motives. How about an urbanity filter, so every time someone says, "Noo please, after you dear Altmer, take that alchemy node and enjoy." becomes "lol wut, bots here, you cheating chinese suckah". "I see you put a lot of points into stamina on your horse" becomes "Eat my hooves, slow noob" and "Oh my, what a pleasant inn" removes all your clothes and starts a drunk dance on a table, putting your crotch in someone's face as they rummage through their inventory, and your underwear. That would allow us all to get on swimmingly.

Pages and pages of "curse" words? That sounds more like spam. That should be reported. I'd also recommend you use the /ignore feature. Clearly the person(s) subjecting you to pages of profane language, is not someone you're interested in hearing from, right?

Actually in most places it is against the law to curse in public, disorderly conduct is what it is called in the US. It is also illegal to curse at law enforcement.
The thing is with such laws, it takes a victim to prosecute. That's why it never happens, or at least not very often. It's kind of like urinating in public, or public nudity.

It doesn't really bother me, but if you are someone that curses don't be surprised if you one day pick up a ban or get fined.

In much of Europe and America new legislation are also going to come to the internet in a bid to tackle this problem, particularly around social media sites. It won't be long until it is as much a crime on the internet as it is outside. Only faceless people will prosecute much more readily and it will result in fines coming through your mail. It's pretty sad the way the world is heading.

While ZOS can put reporting tools in place it is up to the community to self regulate. If you see someone being hateful, discriminatory or behaving in an unacceptable manner then use the reporting tools. Tell the person, respectfully, that their behaviour is not ok. There are a lot of keyboard warriors out there who behave in a way online that the would never do in physical social settings.

People need to understand that online spaces are real spaces and have real world consequences in how you make another person feel. I understand that environments like MMO's have participants from a range of belief systems but some things are just not ok.

On rare occasions that I read zone chat it's for the purposes of trade, grouping, or learning something. When I see someone working hard to disrupt that I send a whisper to them asking them to abide by the community standards of behavior in zone chat. More often than not they stop, and if not I block them, and in the event of racial slurs or verbal abuse/harassment of another player, I report them.

Yes, if we keep reporting them for it, and the GMs actually ban them for it, then we can stop it. It will takes years, sadly, but if we actually stamp on the abusive sods we can stop it.

Unfortunately this would probably also get some of us suspended for lighthearted comments. Which would kill the community.

But we can always strike a balance where the extreme comments get acted on, and the jesting is actually tolerated. Of course this means people would have to get used to different styles of humour.
