/who

Is there a simple way to look up someone's class & level? I really miss the /who command that was common in the games of the past...

Specifically to find out the class/level for players that are not in cursor range.

Thx

In most games you can type /who to see who is in the zone.

ZOS likes to keep all information about population out of the game. I do not care for this policy.

They are also big on keeping your character's information private. This I like.

I understand -- I really am not concerned about the /who for the open zone, but /who <player> is what would be helpful - especially when using before replying to /zone change for LFG requests

I think it is ridiculous for a modern MMO to not allow you to see what gear the other person is wearing when you are standing next to them. You can't even tell what class someone is unless you are grouped with them.

This game needs an inspect feature and I should be able to do a /who CharacterName and at least see their level/class/faction.

I can see it being misused somewhat. I go to extra lengths to make my character look like a different class on the outside, so it's more difficult for other players to get a good idea of what I'm capable of before battle, and a /who function would completely ruin that. I'm not saying that's the reason they left it out, but it's good enough for me. If you want to know someone's class or armor rating or armor type or whatever, just ask them. This is supposed to be a social game, and all I see are people asking for less interaction altogether.

I agree, at least give the option to not allow players to find you or inspect. That way everyone wins.

Other MMO's EQ2 for instance had an /anon and /roleplay command that would block that information to other people.

@emeraldbay‌ I love your way if thinking. I'm all for versatility and experimentation in builds and play styles. I have a strong dislike for gaming communities that develop inflexible viewpoints around what specific class builds should look like, some to the point of excluding players from joining groups if they do not have a specific item/perk/ability. All you end up with is a Game of Clones.

I feel that allowing people to randomly inspect your gear or skill tree detracts from build experimentation and creates elitist play.

I think a WoW armory for eso would be great. The WoW armory displays your character's build, stats, achievements, raid progression, pvp kills, deaths, wins, losses, flag caps, etc. Even minutiae like total amount of damage since your character was level one. It was an amazing feat for Blizzard to create that armory feature but I guess when they were raking in over $1 billion a year in subscriptions, almost any application was doable.

Having one for eso would probably reduce the amount of exaggeration in the forums I'd bet. :)

Given the amount of biased, spin doctored BS sometimes floating around here, this might help to call out some of the more obvious offenders. ;)

But then, given the fact that there were some people figuratively frothing at the mouth because of the added Death Recap feature (quote: "I don't want others to be able to see with what kind of damage I've hit them with in PvP, so they can't figure out what 1337 skill build I'm using!!!11!"), even the most tentative announcement of an armory feature would surely rupture some carotid arteries. While I'm all for natural selection, the possible impact on the GNP has to be taken into consideration. :P

Personally, I don't see the big issue with just asking someone.

"Hey, what's your build?" They'll respond if they want you to know. If not, then they have the right to keep that information as secret as they want (although if they're in your friends list or you have an addon, you can still see their class).

You can see thier class/level once they have been invited to the group. Just look on teh group list. And if you don't like it, you can jsut kick them.

I do not consider it much of an issues myself. Unlike most (all?) other MMO there is no correlation between Roles and Classes in ESO.
I don't even see it that hard with the levels. Around 40+ 2-4 levels difference is nothing.
A way to look at other players gear would be nice, at least when they are in the same group.

Overall DPS not ignoring the enemy healers and DPS is a thousand times more important than seeing the level (or gear).
As is people staying in front of the healer.

    Why?

I'm no 'privacy nut' and laugh at people who complain about /inspect type mechanisms, but in reality why does this game NEED to make it possible?

Their nameplate tells you level and faction and their class is pretty damned obvious the moment they attack something.

Some players aren't always willing to give up that information. Pre WoW armory, I remember some players used to wear crap green gear so they would get challenged to duels in IF/Goldshire or Org. After the duel challenge was accepted, they would put on their really uber gear and kick butt. When armory was first released, they used to log off naked so their gear wouldn't be included in the armory. Those guys were paranoid and hard core. Now armory contains every pvp achievement and you can deduce what kind of gear a player has even if they logged off naked. WoW armory is as close to 100% transparency in an mmo as you can get.

I mentioned that, didn't I? If someone doesn't want you to know, they won't tell you, and if it really bothers you to have to wait until they start attacking, perhaps you should just group with someone else. Forget the fact that you see their class and their chosen "role", if they have one, when you add them to your group.

When Azurah Addon wasn't outdated, it did have a feature that allowed you to see what class someone was by showing the class icon next to their name. I wish they'd update Azurah, it was a fine, simple addon.

Bad players can wear wonderfull gear.
And people with bad gear can still be wonderfull players.

If you fear the "risk" of getting a bad player that much, get a PvE guild.
Maybe this addon is worth a look too:

Even a better point. Good gear does not make a good player, especially in a game like this, where you rely more on your instincts than raw damage output or mitigation. The only function something like this really serves is to make it easier for the elitist crowd to reject players whose builds aren't up to their high and mighty standards.

It's no ones business what I'm wearing or how I build my character. If you want to know more about me and my character why don't you just ask? It's a great way to make friends.

Like the above poster('s) have stated - it brings out that rejection from elitists who think you should be the so-called cookie cutter build before you are allowed to join their party.

    It's just a bad idea.

How did this go from /who to /inspect?

I would like one or both of these.

/who would be nice for seeing who's in the area and whether it's worth the effort of advertising for a dolmen/WB group/pvp/other.

/inspect because I'm curious about your setup but I'm not going to ask you because I don't like talking to people and why would I need to judge you if I don't plan to group with you? Not everyone who wants to see your gear is an elitist raider (trialer?) or social.

I'm surprised with the lack of support to add /who... maybe I was too addicted to its function in EQ1 and EQ2.

Seeing a /zone message and quickly looking up the level of the player sending the message was a go-to move for me to quickly give me perspective if the new dungeon/zone was level appropriate for me to request to join the group.

The same for people asking to join my group - I feel handcuffed not being able to use this feature pre-group, but only post-group. Yes, I know asking is easy, but having the data available is what I'm missing most.

Lastly before /ignoring someone who was a blatant idiot on /zone chat, I would always /who the person -- just for curiosity's sake.

I will need to adjust since I must be the minority on this one, and it does not appear it will be added anytime soon.

I think they should add that for people in your own alliance. Especially with costumes that allow someone in cloth to look like they are in heavy armor.

When you are trying to form a group it would be nice to be able to check and at least see if they are the appropriate level range for the encounter. Yes you could ask them but people tend to get offended and when you have multiple resonces it would be nice to look it up and pick the one that best fits your setup.

You can already see a person's level, without even having to group. Targeting them shows you their level, followed by their character name. If you're grouped up, all you have to do is look at the group menu and it shows you.

Also, I'd like to know when anyone has ever been offended by someone else asking their level. That's a perfectly normal question, I just can't see anyone getting upset over it.

In any case, if they're going to add this, I'd like an option for people who don't want their info publicly known to turn off this feature so that people actually have to interact with me to know what kind of player I am. Alkosh forbid someone actually talk to me in a multiplayer game.

This feature would be fine if it stayed to level and class. There is no reason you need to be able to look at someones gear. Grouping together and you wanna know how well their gear is? Ask them to link it in chat. But, if you are really so worried about someones gear then you really aren't playing all that well in the social zone. ESO has countless builds (there is more than light armor and staff? omg) which means people are going to be geared differently. Judge someone on how they play, not their gear. Kick them if they pull mobs and make you wipe constantly, not because their chest piece is two levels under their actual level and has a health enchantment instead of magika.

Come on guys, be a bit more social than that. Just ask.
Hi there! My name is Vaht or as most people call me, pupsy. I am a somewhat casual PvE and casual small group pvp player. Dude, this game is totes fun and I love playing with friends while in a discord call.

No kidding - just ask... Most people are happy to have a brief one on one and answer a question or two. And if someone does it to you, (and you actually catch it in the chat window (kinda wish there was an optional audible notification on receipt of a whisper), take a couple seconds to answer.)

@ebondeath‌, because I fear it quickly goes from /inspect to /reverseengineer

It doesn't have to be "The History of my Gear" by D.K. Sorcerer. It's not a commitment, it's a question. Not drastically different than a quick interaction with a vendor, except that it's a real person on the other end. I guess you have to weigh how much you want to know vs how much you don't want that brief interaction.

It's not only a normal question, I'd say it's expected, almost mandatory.

@kitsinni‌, much of that can be remedied by being specific in the zone chat request, too. I'm amazed at how many "LFG..." (*crickets chirping*) or "Anyone for Dungeons?" I see regularly.

Specify the level range you're looking for, and either what role you are, or what roles you're looking for. You can pack a lot of information into one line of chat.

"LFG for L40 Dungeon run, Healer and 1 DPS covered" or "L12 Nightblade looking for grinding partner" (Ok, the last one sounded wrong...) will get more useful responses than the above without having to go through the interview process.

It would also be nice if /zone meant /ZONE, not /Alliance. It's odd enough that I can converse to a whole country to try to sell the 10 potatoes I just snagged, but it's even less useful when I'm in Daggerfall and people in Bankorai are hearing my requests, or vice versa.

(We won't even get started on the fool blurting out "Frank and Beans" for the whole front to hear.)

If anyone is offended by being asked if they can handle the situation they are wanting to join (effectively what is happening here), so long as it is done in a courteous manner, then they probably are not set up to do so. There should be no reason for someone to BS about their skills or experience. It's going to become apparent in minimal time.
