I think its a limitation of the engine but not sure.

Everything is like spandex so I assume capes would somehow break everything. Realistic graphics take resources to run so shortcuts like this are necessary because your CPU also has to be informed of where everyone is. Realistic graphics are great in MMOs, huh?

LOTRO managed to introduce them and its donkeys years old.

    Okay so again those:
    trackerscloak2.png
    SuCloak.jpg

Are boring, cliche pieces of cloth that are common to most MMORPG-s out there. They usually look terrible and have terrible physx and clipping issues.

    While banners like theese:
    a93533d554155536f6508d368be8158b.jpg

Are pure awesome. Can be done without performance hit. Dont need sophisticated physics and do not cause clipping bugs. I'd rather have something different than seeing another game with drapes over your shoulders pretending to be an item of value.

Also those banners could replace the boring guild tabards anytiem.

Imma be a pill and say that the lack of cloaks and or trenchcoats seems almost like false advertisement: http://store.bethsoft.com/heroes-of-tamriel-breton-statue-deposit.html (breton dude is pretty much wearing two of the dang things)

The advertisement trailers for this game has all the important characters in cloaks. Cloaks would work great in this game given that proper animations is always better than physic based resource hogs.

Aka make cloaks, capes, and robes part of the armor and not something thatvrests on top.

Or better yet as part of a future expansion pack, release the banners, bangles, capes, and cloaks as part of a new piece of actual armor and make robed and coat versions of each racial style chest piece available.

That in my opinion would be a great idea, no?
Bobbity Boop, this game might become poop, but I'll still play because I'm just a pile of goop!

A great many older games have cloaks. Sure, not all of them are all that great but... they have them. And those pieces of clothing have a firm place in fantasy fluff... or medieval history.

I for one would enjoy seeing even a not perfectly done cloak... wouldn't mind the occasional limb clipping through is, as collision with the character model truly would take too much processor power methinks. Hmmm... maybe a crude version for your own character might be possible, I wouldn't know... but hey, while I would like to see cloaks, it's no big thing. Maybe someday, maybe not, other stuff is more important! ;-)

The people in this thread saying the engine cannot handle it etc. are just pulling it out of their behinds. The game *had* cloaks during alpha but they where taken out and did not look good.

Because they were static one dimensional like our current tabbards or worse? Of course they didn't "Look Good" they weren't dynamic flowing and realistic which most everything else under this engine strives for!

Here's a few examples of "Dynamic" clothing that I created not so long ago and brother let me tell you, if you knew just how long it took to calculate the dynamics on these dresses just for a still image, you wouldn't be asking for dynamic realistic cloaks and capes to be added to this game!

    FirstFancyGown.jpg
    HollywoodShear.jpg
    JamdolfDynamics05_zps4004214b.jpg
    SuperJames02_zpsbbdae48e.jpg

Even if we forgo the whole, Dynamics/Physx calculation by just adding morphs to the cape/cloak models, we're talking about a model who's size because of Morph data will be so huge as to be a whole different kind of lag creator! What's a cloak or cape going to do when you barrel roll out of being frozen in place by a mob or other players stun or freeze spell? That thing has to roll with the punches just as you do and it's going to be colliding with a crud ton of objects and body parts while doing so. Lag much? Or do you just not mind static capes and cloaks clipping through everything breaking the realism of the environment that they so painstakingly went to the effort of making look realistic and beautiful, just so you can have a cape?

Only if my cape is flowing out of the back of my heavy pauldrons like a propper crusader instead of the back of my neck.
You also don't want it to clip your tail.
Tail clipping is not an serious issue on robes as they are tight. however the back of tabard and the apron like decoration on most gear only goes down to the belt on back for Khajiit or Argonian to reduce the tail clipping.
This was an issue with the nightingale armor in Skyrim who had an small cloak.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

So while I can appreciate having the look of cloaks, in my experience, they do cause lag issues. Maybe not for the game itself, or most players, but in other games I have played, in larger raids, we had to turn off our cloaks cause it would cause lag for some users. I don't want to have to select who I raid with based on their graphics ability. (It is encountered in ESO, I know people who cannot run PVP because too many spell being cast lags them)

I don't do the type of programming required to fully understand if this can be dealt with without forcing players to upgrade their graphics. Nor do I want to pass judgment on those that might only be able to run this game with basic or minimal requirements.

But come on, a NB slinking around with a hooded cloak would be cool.
Follow me if I advance, Kill me if I retreat, Avenge me if I die.

When this immediate evil power has been defeated, we shall not yet have won the long battle with the elemental barbarities. Another evil, it may be an invisible adversary, will attempt, again, and yet again, to destroy our frail civilization. Is it true, I wonder, that the only way to escape a war is to be in it?

If I die, you are forgiven, If I live, I will kill you.

BtW... next time you fight a Lich, take a good look at it. What does it wear...? That's right, cloak! So it can't be -too- hard to make in the game... as long as its done as simple as that...

And add a vote for back banners and other backwear options, just to add fun! ;)

@SteveCampsOut‌ I would assume the length of time (and specific calculations) were dependent on the program you are using. There are older 3d modelers that take forever to render a still scene that can be rendered real-time in Unity. Engine has a LOT to do with the efficiency of the calculations.

I'm a proponent of ZOS just buying (trying?) a plug-in such as Cloak Works:

Poser 2014 isn't that old. And while it doesn't take hours or anything to calculate dynamics, it does take minutes. Draping calculations have absolutely nothing to do with rendering engines. Once the clothing is in it's shape it's rendered as fast as anything else. What I'm talking about are the collision detection calculations performed on cloth to make it realistically collide and drape on bodies and objects. This just takes time. It can be cut down of course if you limit what the cloth is draping against and what poses that body can use, but it's still a lot of math. Most games tend to go with static clothing that has just a few morphs in it, like our current Guild Tabards, DAoC and WOW capes and other popular MMO's that have capes. They all use Static clothing items. And none of them strive for the graphic realism that we have here in ESO.

Cloakworks looks great. I'll give you that. But would ESO pay them for their engine and would it work with what they currently have codewise? That's something I certainly can't answer.

Sure this has been said, but they have stated the game engine won't support them.

Cloaks or capes as a costume option on the surface is fine. I would be concerned with the additional load on the servers. As these would be blowing in the wind and such.

I am not in support of adding another item slots with stats. We have more than enough stat slots IMO.

Cloaks were in beta, I believe you can still find videos on youtube of ESO with cloaks. Something about the physics system wouldn't allow for a them, they caused too much lag.

I would pay good money for them.
But apparently the game doesn't support them (whatever that means).
Make the game support them. Cash in all the role players and Tes fans that keep this game running, since PvP and challenging PvE or even progression and fulfillment is not very strong.
