This poll is mainly to discuss to difference in comfort level between the keyboard and gamepad. It also allows me to suggest people check out my personal PS3 controller configuration using Xpadder in this thread: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/96705/eso-ps3-360-custom-xpadder-controls#latest

This isn't Skyrim. You can map all of your abilities to a controller, but it's tricky. Even with presets that people put out, it's still not that great. Xpadder is a good program for games without controller support, but not too great for this game.

I disagree. Having used Xpadder in this game for awhile now, and playing Skyrim for 1000+ hours with a controller, I have been very happy with what Xpadder can do for this game.

Didn't vote because it largely depends on the game.

For several years, now, my PC gaming has been for MMOs and I've mostly played everything else on console. Normally, because MMOs then to have full 10 or 12 key hotbars, or multiples, plus you have to type messages to other players I would say keyboard, for sure.

But I'm not a fan of aswd+mouse toon control PLUS having to key hotbars. I'm convinced we have to do that (and are limited to 5 abilities plus 1 ultimate plus 1 pot) because this game was primarily designed for console. And I think it will play better with console controller. Movement and positioning in the fast paced combat we have here, at least.

So I didn't vote because I've only played with keyboard and after a few days of getting used to it I was fine. But I'm betting it's a lot smoother with a controller.

I'm curious what people who have tried both on pc have to say.

I've never owned a PS(1-4) or an Xbox and thus I am unfamiliar with the gamepad. With this poll I suddenly came to realize that one of the biggest reasons for only having 5 skills + ulti at your disposal at any given time might be the fact that you can't really fit much more than that on a gamepad, at least to my (humble) knowledge unless you use some multiple button combinations. Too bad, since I could really use 1-3 more skill slots per weapon :/

Is that a trick question? Why would anyone want to use a controller for anything other than racing-games? They are inferior in every way possible.

Really? Every config I've tried is just not fluid. I have to hold a button down to access another button layout. Some even have a third button layout. Maybe somebody could recommend a good config to me.

I prefer keyboard, but i dont get that we have to live with UI flaws that exist because of console portability but have no controller support without third party tools.

Been keyboarding for well... forever. I swear my thumbs have got to be the two most dumbest digits on my hands and are always /stuck on stupid. The only thing mine are good for is jumping (left), swapping weapons and/or drinking a potion (right). If it weren't for multi-button mouses I'd probably not be gaming right now.

And? You say that like it means something.

I'm talking about ESO. There are console controllers for PC. And the game us coming out for consoles.

Yes, ESO. If you spent as much time reading what I posted as crafting smartass posts you would see that what I said was for MMOs I use a keyboard since they are all PC games, for the most part. But this one seems to have been designed for console so I'm betting it works better on a console controller. I don't know about the pc console-like controller tho because I dont use them. So I didn't vote. But ill let you know about the Xbox one controller in the Fall when that version cones out.

My hands are too large now to use a controller anywhere near as effectively as the traditional Keyboard and Mouse setup. It also just feels a lot more comfortable when combat situations get intense as my hands don't get cramped with the custom keybindings I use in the game.

Really? Every config I've tried is just not fluid. I have to hold a button down to access another button layout. Some even have a third button layout. Maybe somebody could recommend a good config to me.

I just use my gamepad ( a wired Xbox360 clone) just for combat. I use a mini wireless keyboard (Sumvision Rio) for everything else. My configuration (xpadder) is as follows.

    Left thumb - movement
    Click - sneak toggle
    Right thumb - mouse
    Click - jump
    Left trigger - right mouse
    Right trigger - left mouse
    Start - ability 1
    X - ability 2
    Y - ability 3
    A - ability 4
    B - ability 5
    Dpad up - Quickslot item
    Dpad down - weapon swap
    Dpad left - synergy
    Dpad right - ultimate
Back - map / journal (short / long press)
Left bumper Dodge roll / sprint (short / long press)
Right Bumper (Interact / Loot) (short / long press)

I use the Greymind Quickslot addon which allows the quick slot wheel items to be mapped to keys (I use F1 - F8). Once the item is selected using a function key it still has to be triggered using the Q key (Dpad up)

I use a 17 button Razer Naga MMO mouse... and minimal use of my keyboard.

Note: Poll should have said 'Keyboard & mouse' =) The poll singles out the keyboard as if it's not used in conjunction with any other peripherals... Such as a mouse << Which can majorly determine how much and what you would even use the keyboard for

As you have already pointed out, mapping all the keyboard functions to a keypad results in a very complex button layout. So why bother?

I spend the majority of my playing time questing / fighting / moving. This is MUCH easier using a game pad. If I want to use my inventory / reassign abilities I find somewhere safe and use my keyboard. The make I mentioned in my previous post is intended for android devices, is very compact and has a trackball. Also, I do not sit at a desk, I play from my settee on a 30 inch TV.

Hmmm. I might give a hybrid method a go then. I really prefer my gamepad over keyboard and mouse, but not for this game...yet. I play on a tv as well, but I just use wireless mouse and keyboard. One more question. Where is your mount? Keyboard or gamepad?

I'm going to try Xpadder out now that I heard of it, for the most part I use MotionInJoy for Skyrim and will key it out almost the same way. Right now I'm using Razer Naga for most of my in-game controls and the keyboard is purely for movement only.

Shift, Ctrl, and the arrow keys are on the default settings. Jump is Zero on the numpad so its really close.

Middle Mouse button is Auto-Run, didn't see a point to the Free look thing.

    On the 12 key thumbpad
12346 - are my main action keys
    5 - Interact key
    8 - Ultimate
    7 - quickslot pot
    9 - weapon swap

I haven't setup a use for 10 11 and 12 yet, though I usually don't reach that far back to make use of them.

Index finger buttons (next to the Left Mouse click). I hate the position of these on the Razer Epic, its behind the mouse wheel instead, no idea how that be more comfortable.

Xbox controller has 4 main buttons, 4 f-pad buttons, 2 bumpers, 2 triggers and both sticks can be used as buttons two if you press down in them. Plus there are two buttons in the center that I forget what they call them now on the Xbox one but on the 360 they were the forward and back buttons. That's 16 stand alone buttons not including the directionals on the sticks. And that's before you consider that most games heavy on input usually use combos. 4 main buttons plus another layer combined with bumper or trigger gives you 8 just right there. That's all you need for 5 abilities, an ultimate, a potion and, say weapon set toggle right there.

The short version....There are plenty of buttons on an Xbox controller for this game. In fact, I'm convinced we are limited to 5 abilities and an ultimate because this was designed to be a console game. And every other little thing. It's the least PC like game I've ever played on PC, for sure and that's been apparent from the first time I logged in. We have to use aswd PLUS mouse for movement because the game was intended for two controler sticks. We have to use two mouse buttons for attack and block because the game was intended for two console triggers. Because those two things alone plus abilities keys plus the occasional map toggle and the like could have been designed WAY better for a keyboard. But I'm betting the keyboard was adapted to fit the console design of the game not the other way around. As both a PC and console gamer it's obvious, to me at least.

The console versions got delayed because they are having issues integrating their game networks with the console networks and they have to do it for two different ones, according to the announcement.
