Does ESO feel 'epic' to you?

taylorwilenskiub17_ESO
As the title asks, does it?

For me, the answer is going to be no--not really. It's been rather lackluster for me. Let me explain why.

All of the quests are basic and the same--seal this portal, seal that portal, kill this Daedra, etc. These end results aren't the issue, it's the process of getting there that is not epic.

I have only had 2 epic encounters in this game so far (I am a V12 for the record):

Number 1: The first time I encountered a Titan. It was so badass and looked so cool. I felt like a true champion slaying that beast.

Number 2: An Aldmeri quest in Malabal Tor, in the first main city when you enter. You go on a ship and have to kill this giant sea serpent using fire balistas on the ship. While I think they could have done this better and made it more epic, it was definitely the coolest and most epic moment I've had outside of main story line quests.

The Molag Bal fight was a huge let down--it was like taking candy from a baby. I didn't feel like a hero killing him, I just felt like I was killing another Daedra spider or something.

World Bosses suck. They can hardly be called World Bosses...oh cool, they have a lot of HP and hit like trucks--they still look like regular NPCs. In my mind, WBs are supposed to be large, the encounter epic and unforgettable...they are not.

Even Dolmens are boring, they were cool the first time I did them but they are the exact same in every zone. Not epic at all.

Maybe it is just me, but I thought this game would have more epic encounters...just feels meh.

It has it's up and downs but if it had a better loot system/drops and we didn't have to raid (to get high end gear)it would be alot better. I hate raiding well I should say I hate the elitists that spam chat advertising for people to join Time trials but you must be VR12 and have voice chat and never die and give your social security number/drivers license etc.

There are moments it does , there are monents it does not.

What i think is that there was a wasted opportunity , that is unique to ESO in the ES games , that zen let pass.

Which is , making quests become more and more epic only, pretty much what i mean is , make you feel like a real/famous hero by the end of the game.

Because of how open ES games are , this is really hard to do , it is one open area and the quests are there , some will be great , some wont , there is no real "lvl" requirement.

That is not the case with ESO , the zones have lvls , the further you go , the higher lvl you are and the more epic/famous you should be, but this is only true to some quests.

Even on the end zones of a faction you will be called to do silly things.

Seems to me most MMO failures are down to the players' over-expectations rather than flaws in the game itself.

I don't know what epic means in the context of a video game, especially one in the TES 'franchise', no TES game has ever been of 'epic' proportions to my mind.

    I could not disagree more.

I think most player just want a functional game that is not tedious and boring.

Sadly, that is a tall order for most MMOs.

Sure, some people buy the hype, but a lot of us are seasoned players and we know what to expect and what we will not put up with.

Last time I felt epic in MMO was when WOW was in beta and I just rolled Tauren Shaman. It was my first true MMO.

But then again I dont feel this need to have an orgasam every time I log in to a game. And then cry on forums when I dont get one.

The game is fun. Im having fun. So thats about it really. Screaming at screen - YES, OH F***K YES, THIS WAS AWSOME ! - every 5 minutes a day seems kinda silly to expect.

People expect something amazing and when they don't get it its "Ruining their life ! "

No RvRdungeon open to all three realms with different layers of difficulty and mobs only managable by 50+ people
No public dungeons for 20+ people, no massive worldbosses.
No long questline yielding awesome loot/new sills at the end.
    No minigames
    No housing

So no, no epicness right now. But well see.

No it doesn't, but that's due to the rampant misuse and overuse of this word ever since Hollywood started labeling its every drivel with it.
Last week iI had a bowel movements which I would describe as EPIC. The word has lost its impact and only evokes an eye-roll from me these days.

Do I feel ESO fulfills my expectations? Hell yeah. I fully expected bugs, downtimes and nerfs, as I would with every new piece of programming, especially one so complex.
In the meantime, I am entertained, oft amused and I am distracted from everyday issues, such as epic bowel movements... as expected.

    epic failure, yes.

The PvP had some epic times before it all collapsed (I think it started to collapse with ultimate spamming vamps and/or emps and then the lag hit... end of story)
ESO, the great nothing : no PvE difficulty, PvP lags, zero RP tools...

First time riding up to my first dolmen and duoing it felt epic, especially pushing past the initial big waves of daedra.

Tharn defying Mannimarco was pretty awesome/epic.

    Ship quest in malabal tor.

Seeing sheogorath for the first time (and every time afterwards) was awesome.

Randomly coming in contact with the other princes was epic for me.

3 manning all the 1-42 instances at minimum level was really fun.

Cyrodill feels off and on epic depending on the night.

    *shrug* I'm having fun.

For me, it's too linear to feel epic. And by "epic" I mean in the same vein as "the entire world lies open before me just begging to be explored" like you'd get, say, standing on a mountain in Skyrim.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I know it's pretty much impossible to do open world in an MMO setting. Or at least hard enough to make it not worth the energy.

But ESO is so linear, it's almost Final Fantasy XIII. Well, until the brick wall at the end apparently.

That, and most of the bosses have....very lackluster drops, if they drop anything more than a couple'a gold. That really takes away from the "Ahhhhh!" moments that might have been. Oh sure, you might get a nice piece of gear as a quest reward...but that makes the 1-50 questgrind basically 50 levels of handouts.

I don't want to be rewarded from some random nobody npc all the time. I want to carve my reward out of the ass of whatever boss I laid low. Or perhaps a nice instanced booty chest at the end of a dungeon, in a bandit's tent, whatever. That was pretty much one of my personal favorite things about Skyrim. Ass-kickery until I found the nice fat chest at the end. I grew to love those chests.

ESO has the dungeons, but not the reward.

    So, I guess:

You probably feel that Homer's Epics weren't very Epic either. Hercules Trials were probably ***-hum. Oh stygian birds, big deal just birds. Oh, so you wrestle a half-giant named Antaeus, big deal how boring. I disagree completely. This story is very Epic. The gods are all fighting over your attentions, trying to funnel you and force you into certain actions. They try to drive you and your companions to madness, anger, rage, deceit, corruption or goodness. You fight horrible necromancers, witch kings, werewolves, giants, cultists, Bandit Kings, Pirates. Its all good. I really don't know what you expect. The build up and pacing of the story is great. People spoke about how wonderful the story in SWTOR was, and that made me ***-hum because of plot pacing. This game didn't do that to me.

I think part of the problem is in how people play. If you're playing it like a standard MMO where you ignore reading the lore, listening to npc's, etc. Then you have absolutely no bearing on what is going on or why. You're just hitting mobs, not characters, not demi-gods, not ghosts, not nightmares. Slow down a little bit if you care about the story. Look for the juicy nuggets and read the notes next to that corpse. There's a lot of interesting easter eggs which add meaning behind the story.

I can understand the Linearity issue, but really the only way to get rid of Linearity is to make it a standalone game. Even then, I can strike out in whatever direction I want (and often do). Granted this doesn't make the story that much different between one character to the other, but it does change story order. In all reality this isn't too much different from Skyrim. The only way they could have made it fully open would have been to have enemy or character scaling built in. That aside I believe the story is very Epic, and I feel my character falls in line with the likes of Beowulf, Sigurd, Hercules or Perseus.

The term "Epic" is really going to be interpreted in many different ways; basically on a person by person basis.

For me I think the first thing that comes to mind on this subject is the game Skyrim; often I feel like people think ESO should be Skyrim Online. I think this is an unrealistic comparison at best.

Graphically I think it is a great game. I've found the story to be engaging; although I think the variety to the missions could have been better (structurally, not story wise); knowing from the Tom's Hardware review that the dungeons suffer from Copy Pasta is a disappointment.

Do I think the game is Epic? I find applying that term to any game odd; I suppose Skyrim was Epic; I suppose ESO is as well. Epic though? I've been playing games for many years now including many genres; what really makes a game Epic for it's genre?

    This story is very Epic.
Gonna ignore pretty much the rest of what you said because it all boils down to this. And it has an easy reply:

ESO isn't just a story. Or only a story. It's an MMO that has a story component. I'm not playing ESO because I can't find a better book to read, I'm playing it as a form of interactive entertainment.

What's more, not everyone gets their rocks off with a great story. (I do, but that's a different story. Heh.) I chose to focus on the game parts of...you know, this game.

So sure, the story part is good (assuming you get the chance to actually read it before respawns want to go best 2 out of 3 rounds, or the npcs aren't glitched out) it's the rest of it I feel is less than epic.

It is as epic as any other TES game. Hell maybe even more epic, as people have had trouble killing Mannimarco and you actually get to fight a Daedric Prince. Mannimarco was a joke in Oblivion, a game in which you don't fight the final boss who is a Daedric Prince.

Fighting a Titan in ESO is way more engaging than fighting Alduin in Skyrim, where all you had to do was use the shout to make him land and hit him with your preferred stick.

The fact is that TES games aren't epic unless you use your imagination a bit, or use mods to enhance some of the encounters. Which is why I love them so much.

As of right now, I have tied myself into the roleplay section of the game, so my main focus has been in delving into the lore. HOWEVER, without that, I wouldn't be in the game. I felt that the game was a gigantic letdown, especially after the AMAZING trailer! I want that, not a few lackluster world bosses and quests that Morrowind puts to shame!

Sure, it's a damned MMO, but it is also a TES game! Give us good NPCs, better quests, and TES-style boss fights! I got into ESO for a reason: to go out as a Bosmer with my High Elven and Khajiit friends and take down the other factions. However, the sucky grouping/phasing and horrible, redundant quests ruined that dream!

ESO gameplay needs to get broader, not taller. More sandbox elements, less VR grind. I really wanted to get involved in PvP but the bottom line is that you need to get to the high VR's to be anything but fodder.

If you don't like the VR story and grind you're basically out of luck and out of interesting things to do.

There you go! I stuck with Daggerfall and Morrowind(My two favorite out of the series) for the abundance of fun things to do! While they both had their moments(Daggerfall did feel a bit too dungeoncrawley for my tastes every once in a while.. even though that was what it was :| ), they're much better than ESO's "do this, then this. Okay... done" style!
