Stop Raising the Level Cap

Okay so the game has been out for less than 2 months and you've already raised the level cap.

Really?

I'm hoping this was just a 1-off because Craglorn was the first major update, the first addition of true group based end-game content outside of PvP, and something you've been talking about for a while.

If its a one time thing, then I'm fine with it.

But if this is how I can expect the game to progress, I might have to rethink my subscription, as much as I love the game.

I do not want constant linear progression. I do not want to constantly be chasing a carrot for minor stat increases. I do not want to constantly be trying to keep up with players who play 24/7 and can reach the new cap faster than 90% of the player base.

That makes the game feel like a chore.

Expansion of the game should be horizontal the vast majority of the time. Add new skill lines, new gear sets, new content for me to tackle and master. Expand systems by adding new Trials, new forms of PvP, new zones to explore, new story lines, ect.

I should want to explore new content because I find it interesting, not because I'm required to in order to maintain optimization of my character. And if I do want to enhance my character, it should be through learning new abilities or obtaining unique set bonuses, not spending hours trying to get 5% more weapon damage by gaining access to higher tier gear.

Level cap increases are a necessary evil with this type of game... Though I do agree that if they do it for every large patch(or even every major expansion) many of the players will never see the end game and get frustrated. Personally, my days of heading for the end game to raid and compete in any way are long gone. Nowadays I just try to enjoy the quest I'm on, and I'm lucky enough to have a couple RL friends with alts that we only play when the lot of us are on(phasing is a plague on casual grouping). But plenty of people are going to be stuck going it alone and that'll cause many subscription cancellations.

As soon as I heard about the Veteran Rank system I figured that the we'd be seeing level cap increases. And like I said, this one isn't all that bad. Normally increasing the cap 2 months into launch would seem asinine. But given that Trials were originally supposed to be in the launch version, it seems more like they're finishing the game than expanding on it.

I just hope this isn't a trend and that future cap increases take considerably longer to implement.

Bingo ... I have enjoyed the causal group of the public dungeons/delves and the more formal group dungeons; but I am only a marginal player and I am rather out of step with much of my guild because I am playing slowly. I know it will be a fiasco at vet level for a number of reasons and when my toons finish the main quest on normal I will be quiting because there will be nothing that I do without frustration. And its clearZoS doesn't care.

The smart thing would have been to add Craglorn without increasing the Veteran Level Cap, thus providing another alternative way to 'level' your character rather than the limited options currently in-game.

I'm just afraid they've dug a huge hole for themselves with the two-tiered leveling system they have (Traditional and Veteran). I hope they have some grand plan behind it...

    Good point @Maverick827‌ .

I feel bad for anyone who made Legendary VR10 gear. Especially if they worked their butt of to get there, instead of the people who took advantage of one of the many leveling exploits that was fixed.

I also don't like the feel I will never reach game end but there are other players who will get bored with just parallel expansion.
Someone likes questing and someone grinding, think there should be both ways.
Because that's the only way they will cut you from ultimate game's end, which will often mean you quit playing, which is what they don't like to happen.
I'm fighting for a higher purpose

    Or, ya know, leveling sideways?

That's what this game was sold as. Progress your character through earning new skill lines, leveling your abilities, ect.

There's plenty of crappy level grind MMOs out there, why do we need another one?

An example of a good expansion would be adding the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, along with quest lines, skill lines, a crime system, ect.

That would give you the ability to unlock those lines, level those skills, experiment with the crime system (which will supposedly be player driven) and have fun without chasing slightly higher numbers.

IMO vet lvl wasn't needed. Banning the exploiter's and abuser's should have been swift and just.
Every game has it racer's and 24/7 crowd which again imo ruin every game that come's out.
There really isn't a casual player, there are just different styles of play.
But all and all the game is designed to be played by all no matter how u play.
Just don't cater to the minority. Please..

Technically the level cap is 50, so it hasn't been raised.

+1 on this, although I think the Craglorn content and level cap was already determined before the game was released.

By far, most players are not VR10+, and in my guilds it seems that many of the VR1+ players don't log in as often.

Hopefully, they will address VR leveling and content before increasing the level cap again.

+1 for OP. They shouldn't even have introduced VR levels yet, ESPECIALLY since they have no VR content of its own and had to rehash the other factions quests. They should have simply released 1-50, you are always going to have those that get to cap in 2 hours. Craglorn should have been released after the first month and been VR1- maybe VR5 level with NEW content, not this recycled faction crap.

Read up on skinner box design, you will find the reason some people enjoy leveling more than other things. Or why people like grinding more than questing.

I disagree. Advancing in levels is how character progression is expanded and new skills are introduced. They go hand in hand. It's been at the core of RPG development since I can remember.

MMORPGs should never be about reaching level cap as quickly as possible so you can grind a new dungeon every month for gear upgrades. At least not in my opinion anyway. Because I find this sort of approach to character advancement stale and repetitive.

I much prefer a system like this - where max rank is difficult to achieve so there is always room for my character to grow and new levels to strive toward.

Yes but it doesnt matter, it happens on a subconscious level.
You know that rewards are insubstantial, still your brain rewards you for getting them.

HaHa they will probably do this for each new zone they add. Look at the Map see all the zones that don't exist. Final cap will end up like VR50.

It isnt about you or me, the design works that way. And it obviously does there are games that operate on just this single reward system.
I tried to answer your question.
It can well be that you are not affected, but others are, a lot of people are.

So you should stop and stall at V10? People got this rank within the first month. ZM anticipates this game to be played for years, ala WoW. How can they expect people to keep playing and not get bored if they hit max rank in the first month.

So when they keep releasing new content and new zones, you expect players to complete those zones with no level change? I agree that people power level like crazy and I do not see the appeal as they basically rushed through the game.

But if I plan on playing this game for years, I do not want to keep playing if I know that I could reach the cap in a month or two and can expect no cap raises.

This is my first MMO and I want to play it for awhile. Not quit in a few months because I maxed out and have nothing to work toward.

I'm not saying raise the cap often. Try making the game a little harder so they can't max it out in less than a month like a lot of people.

I didn't understand your post until I read the last sentence. Now it makes perfect sense.
    This is my first MMO

That's fine and its cool. But it also means you're unfamiliar with the other options for increased play time besides increasing the level cap.

I gave a bunch of examples earlier of what's called horizontal progression. Try reading through those posts and see if it alters your perspective at all.

When you realize that there are many ways to expand the game substantively without increasing the level cap, you might understand why so many people don't like this quick increase or at least hope its not the beginning of a trend.

Adding VR's is fine. It is like any MMO adding a tier to the gear.

All you get it 10 maj sta and health per rank. Nice way to govern the game. Different and because EVERYONE can level up in their own way it is not like a 3rd gen MMO where the gear sets are locked in a big new raid.

Hardcore level faster, casuals slower, some in PvP and some in PvE some in both.

VR raises takes care of every player.
