Item Set Testing in Vengeance

Measured from Miats addon, PC/EU has more people on Vengeance than on a locked GH. Two bars should be 100-200 and 3 bars over 300, that is consistent, with higher numbers in big fights than on a locked GH.

Not sure it’s that populated on other servers

Don’t think I’ve even seen 1 bar on any faction XB NA

Having spent the last few hours in Vengeance today, I can say, it actually isn't as dead as the few loud people here are saying, decent sized fights. This is PS/NA, btw. All I can say is that the sets seem to bring the lag, the bar swap issues (well, actually that was still prevalent since the first test) and skills not firing. I must have hit my ult 3 times each time I wanted to use it (beserker, if that helps). Slightly enjoyable up until I ran into our first DC, RoA player. I immediately left. All in all, it's the longest I've stayed in Vengeance.

I don’t think many people are claiming that this Vengeance test is literally dead. The point is that it is failing to reach the population levels Zenimax clearly wants these tests to achieve.

On PC NA, the campaign has barely reached three bars on a single faction—EP—once. During prime time, it has generally remained at two bars across the board, dropping to one bar for most of the rest of the day.

With every possible incentive being thrown at it, and with Vengeance being the only campaign available, of course it is unlikely to be completely empty. But that is an incredibly low standard. Zenimax wants to test the campaign under massive-battle conditions, yet it is not even reaching half the population it was designed to hold. The tests are failing to attract enough players to create the conditions they are supposedly meant to evaluate, making the resulting data far less valuable.

When the only available campaign still cannot consistently reach three bars during prime time, the sentiment from the playerbase could not be clearer.

Just bring Gray Host back already.

Plenty if people are repeating "it's dead" over and over. We haven't hit primetime days/hours. You're one of the few making these remarks before it even went live. And as a reminder, again, nearly 3 bars on one faction is close to GH pop cap. Give it a rest already.

This is just a lie. The claims made were that vengeance was dead, which it verifiably was. Yes, during this test it has some population, but that's because the campaigns the majority of the playerbase want to play in are closed, making vengeance the ONLY large scale option. On top of that, there is an additional incentive with double AP. Of course it will have some population after multiple changes to increase the population. You aren't following the conversation, give it a rest already.

You’re arguing against something I never said. Nobody here claimed the test campaign is completely dead. The argument is that, despite being the only available campaign and having every incentive imaginable, it still isn’t reaching the participation levels ZOS supposedly wants for these tests. Which should at minimum be 3 bars across all 3 factions, at the moment the population in vengeance during primetime is about the same as Gray Host gets without double AP and competing against 2 other campaigns. Please read the post before responding to it.

Irrelevant. If, despite every possible incentive and being the only available campaign, Vengeance can only barely surpass the population of a locked Gray Host, that is hardly a success.

What’s the point of continuing to develop this mode when a large portion of the dedicated PvP playerbase clearly isn’t interested in it, the campaign is instead being propped up by PvE participation, and population numbers are still nowhere near the levels these tests are supposedly intended to evaluate?

The stated goal was to stress test large-scale battles and population caps approaching 900 players. If the campaign cannot even come close to generating those conditions, then the tests are already failing to provide the environment they were designed for.

Can confirm the populations on PC NA have been mediocre at best, reaching 3 bars momentarily on EP once. Clearly a failure as far as these tests go even with every possible incentive thrown at the campaign, please end the tests early and give us back GH before the weekend.

Yes Unleashed Fury is a stupid skill but I don't know if the balance team follows proper constraints or balancing philosophies. Tanks should not get a dps skill that does more damage and burst than DPS setups. It's an AoE that tooltips for 11k on a Vanguard versus standard AoEs doing around 7.8k. Really great balance.

I've mentioned it being a problem back on the PTS Feedback thread, but alas ZOS does balance patches with 3 month lead times where it's really too late.
Unleashed Fury - Why have an AoE skill that does damage after 2 seconds? Tanks should not be doing crazy AoE damage. We already have destruction staff ult for that. This just seems like an unfun skill that is only usable in a zerg. I would prefer an AoE CC instead, since some classes are missing AoE CC options.

It's easier to balance Vengeance than Gray Host. Unleashed Fury is a very obvious one. A lot of people are complaining about it in-game too. It can be nerfed 30% to be in-line or lower than a standard AoE damage of 7.8k.

I think the most active pvp players saw the decision for the future of cyrodiil right after the "hardware reset". For over two months, there was simply not a single reason to bring this alive and to do this pvp crap. For over two month, GH was running perfectly without any argument you bring in why vengeance is a test, what the plans and so on.

After the layoffs, after GH is full every single minute in prime time you force the players into that thing.

What is with answer of the so called tests with "healing" and "aoe-cap"? What were the results, if testet propper? You testet that on every change you bring in at vengeance in every condition? You are going to test this right to every upcoming "test" with every changes again to check the results?

You just want that pvp stuff, that noone else wants to play for a longer term and you try to push it right into the game without any listening and just using the same phrases of "enjoy" and "experience". The majority of players made the experience that "testing" vengeance is not enjoyable, and playing vengeance for long terms is not enjoyable too. The players are not willing to accept these tests are placed into a forced-live-experience and beeing in the best case part of an developer live sandbox.

I have tried it once but this iteration just doesnt make any sense at all. You have all the carrry build aspects some of the item sets are bringing but you dont have any possibility for countering them by just having some working setup yourself since you cant put up builds. I dont know anymore for whom this Vengeance is planned.

It looked like a good idea when it looked like Vengeance is about balance but not really anymore.

Yeah... this is almost exactly what so many of us have been saying. It is clear as day that they are trying to rebuild Cyrodiil from the ground up, not conducting meaningful performance tests to improve live Cyrodiil and not simply creating a separate campaign for the people who enjoy Vengeance.

At this rate, the process will take ten years just to reach a point where the open-world PvP playerbase is mildly satisfied compared to what we already have in Gray Host. And now they are pissing vengeance players off too. It is truly an abhorrent waste of resources.

    That is inherently false.

You’re right, 1 person is asking for further vengeance development. My bad.

To their point, each bar in Vengeance is 100 people vs 33 (35?) on Grayhost. So while it might look dead, it's likely not at all.

Each bar in Vengeance is up to 100 people.

If there are 99 people on from that alliance, it'll be one bar. If there are 3 people on from that alliance, it'll be one bar.

It might look dead and not be at all. But it might also look dead and totally be dead.

They should rename the campaign Schrodinger's Khajiit.

Trying to steer away from the vengeance population discourse and offer some feedback for the devs. I'm a GHer who never plays vengeance unless it's the only available option (like now). I will say that adding procs does add some flavour to vengeance that I quite enjoyed. It's still not enough build options so I will back to GH the moment it reopens, but it does make vengeance a lot more enjoyable if I ever need to be there. The lag isn't terrible. Worse than previous vengeance tests but way better than GH on any given day

Re: population. Maybe this weekend some of the Vengeance enjoyers will take 5 minutes to record an actual battle larger than 50v50 (which you get on GH anyway), because I still don't believe these population caps are real or accurate whatsoever. Not to mention no one can produce a video showing that there are even close to 100v100 man zergs from the first, arguably largest, test. The largest I've seen recorded was the bridge battle, which again, is not remotely close to the caps being declared.

As a GH Cyro player, I don't really think about how many people are playing Vengeance. Same as I don't think about how many are playing ToT (another ZOS addition I am not interested in). I just know I do not like Vengeance, so I choose not to play it (and no amount of AP bonus will change that).

For me, they changed too much about Cyro with Vengeance, instead of working on the balance issues. Adding proc sets seems to go against what Vengeance was to provide, so my assumption (as with others) is that GH and BR will eventually just go away. If/when Vengeance does become the only option then I know I will choose to play other games instead of playing ESO.

For now, just looking forward to when GH is available again.

I have tried to hop into every Vengeance test so far. This one the lag is significantly worse than any of the previous tests anytime you get lots of people in one area. If you are testing set bonuses on performance, it has made it worse.

Enjoying this version of Vengeance a lot more than any previous version (not saying I like Vengeance, but in comparison). Performance wise I´ve yet to have any major lag spike beyond what can be expected in a large scale PvP environment (some lag is to be expected and it´s acceptable). Feeling like skill matters again when you´ve the option to customize your build/character. Pure number advantage isn´t the main thing that determines the outcome with this version of Vengeance, which is good. Will say what others have said, that it would´ve been a good idea for ZOS to have released a list of what sets worked.

We want to acknowledge all of the questions on why we're continuing to do these tests. Ultimately, we're still answering questions that will inform the future of PvP that can only be answered with a concentrated player population in a live environment.

Throughout Vengeance testing, we've been isolating different parts of ESO's combat systems to better understand what has the biggest impact on server performance during large-scale battles. What we've consistently seen is that reducing overall combat complexity allows Cyrodiil to support significantly more players with much better performance. Every ability in ESO can interact with passives, Champion Points, Item Sets, status effects, buffs, debuffs, and other systems. Each of those interactions requires additional server processing, and in large-scale PvP those checks add up quickly. That's why we're continuing these tests. We're testing and proving hypotheses in the environment that counts the most: the live game. Vengeance is still a testing environment, and to answer those questions with confidence, we need players participating in the same testing environment rather than split across multiple campaigns.

For those of you asking for Item Sets and to have more build options, this next round of testing is designed to answer exactly that question. Previous tests helped us establish a stable baseline. Now we're evaluating whether Item Sets can be reintroduced while preserving the performance improvements we've seen. If the data shows they don't meaningfully impact performance, that's a path we can explore further.

We also know there are players who enjoy Vengeance specifically because it offers a different gameplay experience than traditional Cyrodiil campaigns. Many of you have shared concerns about gameplay patterns associated with Item Sets and those concerns are just as important to this process. The goal isn't simply to restore systems because players asked for them. It's to understand what can be added back while preserving both the gameplay identity and the performance improvements that many of you have come to enjoy.

Whatever the outcome, this testing helps us make informed decisions about the future of PvP. If Item Sets prove to be compatible with those goals, that's something we'll be able to explore further. If they don't, that tells us something equally valuable and helps us evaluate other ways to expand build customization while maintaining the strengths Vengeance has demonstrated.

We know these temporary changes aren't how everyone wants to play, and we sincerely appreciate everyone who participates, shares feedback and helps us gather the data that will shape what comes next.

So basically, you do not care about the active PvP playerbase at all and will sacrifice their enjoyment to do testing that people generally get paid to do, correct? Makes sense. The future of this company is clear.

This announcement and disrespect has me deeply concerned for the future of ESO. If they can dis one portion of the player base, an inexplicably devoted portion of the player base, without a second thought, what's next?

Exactly the problem here. ZOS expects to be respected but they don't hold up their end of the respect arrangement.

For what it's worth, I levelled to Veterancy 100 on exclusively Vengeance. I was the Emperor of AD for most of the first 30 day Vengeance Campaign since it went permanent. I have put a lot of time into Vengeance specifically.

I enjoy it as a much more casual, approachable Cyrodiil. The lack of sets reduced a huge barrier to PvP since I no longer felt like I had to chase down certain set bonuses to make a build work.

The inclusion of sets in Vengeance has also brought back that barrier, since now I feel like if I want to truly compete, I need to hunt down specific sets. I don't want to have to do that for Vengeance.

I don't believe anything outside of vengeance should affect anything inside of it. Overall, I'd say the inclusion of sets within Vengeance has been negative.

We don't want Vengeance, I think you could get that from running any report of how many people played it.

Accept it, it was a bad idea and total fail.

Now, I understand that some exec wants to review it and you need numbers in report to show that people play it.
Just break the ice, blame in on someone who was already fired, better then a fake report by forcing people to play it.

Today om PC/EU primetime, all alliances reached 3 bar for some time. There are both in my guild and other guilds an increasing number of people who tries out this Iteration of Vengeance and like it. An organized group has quite an impact in this version, but as not stupidly big as that can have on Gray Host. Bombers are also back by the way.

I suggest that those who havent tried it do so, the set introduction is a big improvement and the lag is still minimal for most people.

Finally I want to remind all that ZOS has explicity stated that thay have tried everyting and failed to improve Gray Host, thus they started to rebuild cyro from scratch. I can verify that there were lots of tests on Gray Host few years ago, of which none produced any sunbstantial improvement.
